Make sure to take it out of overdrive when climbing like that. It really helps keep temps down. With mine out of overdrive I never went over 210* or so going over the Rockies.

Rig looks good as always!

For sure, try to keep overdrive off on any incline, but definitely can forget at times, especially living on a mountain with barely any flats.

appreciate it!

i love it when there is no other cars around

Did some long overdue transmission maintenance today

Replaced trans filter and gasket, along with a little flush (not the full transmission, just the 4-5 quarts that can be squeezed out of the oil pan).

Also noticed recently when climbing/crawling extreme inclines in 4wd my a/t oil light would come on periodically. So got a B&M 70268 and with some help from BigFishAllDay's trans cooler write up, got that installed also.

That was smart, if you didn't know already supercharged engines are prone to burning/overheating the transmission fluid. They cause extra heat all around, but since the trans fluid is "cooled" by the radiator in the stock cooler, it stays too hot for too long. For us with 96-98 rigs with no temp sensor, this can eventually kill the transmission if the fluid is not changed regularly (the previous owner had to replace his due to lack of maintenance).

On long climbs like you experienced you will start to see issues. When I go up to the mountains, it's a similar experience, you're going from sea level to 7000+ feet so the supercharger works up a lot of heat very quickly.

I had no idea, glad you let me know, that makes a lot of sense. It gives me a little more peace of mind now.

found a good deal on a rear end with e-locker out of a 00' taco. The guy gave me the matching front diff as well.
Cant wait to throw this 3rd member in and finally retrofit an e-locker. still gotta find out the ratios. Also depending if gears dont match ill throw the front diff in too. Super excited for the e-locker, just gotta find some time now

Nice pick up. Seems like all the Tacomas and 4Runners being parted out on BI Craigslist have an Elocker. I bought mine from a guy from Hilo side.

BTW I have a new harness from Low Range Off-road that I didn't use since I retrofitted a stock harness. LMK if you're interested.

Yeah stoked to finally pick one up after all of the ones I have seen.

I was just looking at those harnesses online, it would be killer if it could pick one up locally, Ill send a pm

Took apart and cleaned the donor axle.
Found out its a 4.10 ratio, which matches my current gears meaning i dont have to swap out the front diffs, super stoked on that!
Also just bought a low-range offroad elocker ecu harness from @CRB Racing and an elocker ECU and OEM rr diff lock button off ebay.
Been studying @BigFishAllDay's retrofit and this site :Retrofit Electric Locker. Between the two I there is a substantial amount of helpful info.
Very excited this is all coming together.

Here is the e-locker third member from the donor axle

Got the low range off road wiring harness from CRB Racing. connected the harness to some power and the E-locker actuator and everything works!
Just ran all the wiring through the car, gotta wait for a full day or two to actually retrofit the 3rd member.

But with everything wired up, tested and working I could not be more excited.

Also due to my lack of research I ordered a 4x4 elocker ecu and oem button off ebay, not realizing that they are not needed when wiring with the
LROR harness, which is just plug and play (makes things very simple!). So once the ecu and rr diff locker button come in, i will probably post them up for sale

testing the harness and actuator with a makita battery... everything works!

It may not be functional yet but i have been waiting for this day for a long time

Yes, you won't need the button or locker ECU with the low range off road harness. Just plug it in, route the harness and mount the button.
One thing I learned when I did my retrofit. Don't use the gasket as a template to drill the holes for the locker!
Use the gasket to mark where you need to clearance for the e-locker, then install the diff assy. And use that to help drill the holes.
I used the gasket to locate the holes, drilled it and the bolts were off!

Super helpful, well definitly do that! With the gasket not being extremly solid it seems very easy to screw up the drilling.

Finally finished E-locker Retrofit

The day has come, I am finally locked!

Details:
Donor diff: 00' tacoma axle - 4.10 gears (matches mine) - also pulled any studs needed to modify my housing
Low Range Off Road Wiring Harness (bypass ECU)
Toyota OEM Diff gasket (part #42181-60050)

Very helpful how to's:

-@BigFishAllDay's build thread
-Retrofit E-locker

Pulled my axle; prepped it for the modifications. Have to make new stud placements
