Get your 4Runner frame inspected at a dealership

I would think there would be less carelessness in Japanese manufacturing. Those people take pride in their work. Mine is JT vin also.

I try to buy Japanese and German products.

I have a Chevy Suburban, bought new. Build quality leaves a lot to be desired along with materials used. Things just keep falling off. Only used for highway driving. Also a GMC Acadia. Kicking myself in the ass for buying American. All my other cars are Japanese and German, all excellent.

Not trying to start the American worker/manufacturing vs Foreign worker/manufacturing debate here but I don't think that we Americans take pride in doing anything now. Always waiting for Friday to come around.......

same here...for anything automotive pretty much. i am very pro-America and all that but put my trust in asian/german auto scene.

Ok, then go buy a new truck. You’ll have a valid warranty to cover you if the frame rots, and you can take preventative measures against it as well. A rotted frame on a neglected ~10-15 year old vehicle is quite realistic. considering these are boxed frame that hold moisture by nature, I don’t see how you can coat it anymore properly without a liquid undercoat. And this is not commonly done from the factory.

Negativity doesn’t equate to invalidity.

You're right, you are both negative and invalid. this post doesn't pertain to you, does it? but you persist in being a Di@khead with you loser comments. I and the other posters here are not the only one that have frames rotting off of their vehicle. you don't know each of the situations, but still you persist, dude seriously go **** yourself

Exactly. Long time ago, I had made a promise to myself that I would never buy an American car. Buckled and bought the Suburban and Acadia, because I am also pro-America and all. Never again. My money and its value is far more important than helping American car companies and American workers. When they start to compete with Japanese and Germans, I'll think about supporting them at that time. Americans have a very long ways to go. Until then, nothing American in my driveway. Just waiting for the wheels to fall off these 2 cars so I can get rid of them. Not worth selling them now as they depreciate 5x faster than imports.

My friend was given a free 2004 Suburban Z71. Every fluid changed, fresh set of Michelins, etc. What was the problem? Frame rotted out at the crossmember above the gas tank!

Now he's got this nice free truck that stickered at $40k+ when new 14 years ago, and now he's going to complain to the NHTSA because he can't drive his family and dogs in it. All that damn hard-earned cash of his, he deserves an extended warranty!!!

Personal insults, name calling? To a guy who posted something sensible? Dude, just because he posted something your didn't like should cause you to call him names. What he said was valid. We are talking about a $3000, 15 year old neglected vehicle.

Totally uncool. We actually learn from hearing different perspectives and different points of view.

i cant really think of an American made rig that i'd buy.

im 32, and have owned:
98 nissan xe-v6 5 speed pickup - great
99 vw golf 4dr - great
2003 vw GTI - great
2002 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 - great except death wobble (forgot, i do respect the 4.0 jeeps and would prob run a 4dr jeep wrangler)
2003 jetta wagon 2.slow - decent
2005 wrx - low mileage - stock - POS but i had fun with it
2004 T4r - so far so good
within the next 10 years ill look to get into a new t4r, used land cruiser
or used t4r

not into American cars/trucks unless it's American muscle.

Enough being a sensitive little man(maybe I'm making an assumption or two there as well?). This isn't your forum, and just because I'm being negative towards your wishes in life does not mean that people reading this thread cannot benefit from the points I make(even if they completely disagree). Furthermore, you should work on your reading skills. I beg of you.

Maybe you should work on trying not to be so reactive. Name calling? Really? Maybe I bought a used vehicle with a case of frame rot as well. Except, I inspected it and used that to negotiate a huge discount. If you know, you know.

Same here. But classic American muscle, nothing new. I must admit, my 2003 Corvette Z06 was a great car though. Yeah, in every single category, there is a better import option that don't depreciate like American. For me to consider American again, there cars will need to be discounted 40% over the comparable import.

uncool is people who know nothing of another's situation coming in and claiming the vehicle was neglected. there are thousands of tacoma, tundra, and sequoia vehicles being fixed, are you going to try to claim that they were all neglected as well? if it was your truck and it was only the frame that was rotten and you were told to junk it, you too would be pissed

if the post doesn't pertain to you, kindly BUZZ OFF!!!

Obviously, defective manufacturing sourced from an American manufacturing company as others have pointed out. Maybe the ones made in Japan were manufactured right, hence not being fixed. If that is the case, then your truck was neglected. Toyota not responsible. The guy is only trying to say that but you seem to be taking it personally. In fact, it's a great and valid point to bring up.

And you are wrong about if this doesn't pertain to him that he should buzz off as this post will help others see the other side of this debate and they may make the sound and logical decision to junk theirs instead of waiting years to have their issue resolved. Sometimes, you just have to move on.

Sorry about your situation. Best of luck in your en-devours in getting yours resolved.

this post was to inform people whose 4runners are failing in the same mode as the tacoma, tundra and sequoia trucks are to have their voice heard with the NHTSA, if you don't like it, tough, it doesn't apply to you does it? you just want to play some SJW games here this morning, and stir the pot..

Maybe you could tend towards things that apply to you, you need not jump into a post that you have nothing constructive to add to, just coming in to be a negative pot stirrer. there was truly no need for you to jump into MY post, and play freakin Judge Judy with me. you have no skin in this, so go pound sand.

Not valid enough to Toyota. I obviously wish you nothing bad, but I'm trying to put you into perspective of what you're dealing with. Your case wouldn't hold together a valid argument against them junking your truck vs replacing the frame. Just because you and I think that it should be appraised at more than $3000 does not mean Toyota will. You'd might as well tell them that the dog in your 4Runner is the best dog in the world. To you, it is. To the rest of the world, they could care less. Again, nothing personal, but putting this into perspective.

Again, this is not even a valid argument. Evidence on how the issue differs on other trucks is apparent and visible here. It kind of does apply to me if I had a truck with a hole in the frame, doesn't it? Again, you aren't entitled to choose who engages in forum activity here. And, if someone is playing SJW games, it's the guy trying to start this #MeToo movement of 4Runner frame rot cases. The SJW doesn't defend the big corporation.

If you think I'm being Judge Judy, then the actual legal process behind your whole endeavor will run a train on you.

but as you've stated, nothing personal right

I don't know what to tell you if that's what you interpreted. Definitely wish you the best on this. If you search, you'll find that many have tried to do this in the past 7-8 years if you combine prior generations, to no avail. In a few more years we will see the exact same in the 5th gen section.

FWIW, there doesn’t seem to be consistent understanding in this thread about the rust settlement. From the settlement website: “The class action lawsuit claims that the frames of certain Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia vehicles lack adequate rust protection, resulting in premature rust corrosion of the vehicles’ frames.” What owners did or didn’t do to mitigate the possibility is irrelevant since the allegation is that the frames were not treated with appropriate preventive coatings to begin with.

I had the good fortune of buying a 4Runner that has no rust issues and was frankly shocked to see some of the pics people have posted of their frames. That kind of deterioration is not normal even after 10+ years.

Toyota is replacing frames at no cost to the owners on vehicles as old as 2005s under the settlement and even providing loaners for up to a week. So they’re not just paying out market value and crushing these trucks. And the process is something to see.

Do we know if the initial frame inspection is covered by Toyota or out of pocket for the owner?

Considering there is no sort of recall or special service campaign, I would say be prepared for them to charge you as they would any other used vehicle inspection. You might find a nice dealer who will for free.
