Getting Rid of the Seat Belt Chime

First off don't flame me for defeating a safety feature, the blinking lights on the dash serve that purpose just fine and less annoyingly. My 4th Gen did not have an audible warning (just the lights) and I lived through 120K miles of driving it.

I tried all of the recipes for disabling the audible seat belt chime on other threads without success. Finally, I called the dealer's service dept, the good news is they said that if the manual lists it as "customizable" they will do it, the bad news is that they wanted $52.80 to turn the key and punch a few buttons in the secret sequence. The service guy suggested that I talk to my salesman to get it done for free. The sales manager setup an appointment for tomorrow morning. We'll see how it goes and if I can learn anything about the process.

I drove mine into my dealership, asked for it to be turned off and they did it on he spot for free, here in San Diego.

Does this tell me how to turn it off because I can't read Spanish.

well not in words--lol...I don't have the seat belt section of the RM. I can only look and the wiring diagram for now (I don't have my 4runner yet either). From what it looks like, there is a 2 wire (one blue and one green) harness that connects to the seat belt assembly. There also seems to be another 2 wire (pink and green) also. From what I can tell it's just a simple switch. If you want, trace the wires that come from the lock portion of the buckle of the seat belt. Take a picture of this area and report back so i can see the setup. What I'm thinking is you can just put in a jumper across the wire for now. This will/should turn the light and buzzer off. It will assume the seat belt is fastened. This is until I get the other portion of the RM that explains the seat belt function and the steps to turn it off.

Sooooo...you're saying cut the blue?

Let me consult an expert.....

I was talking to another member and was told that jumping the terminals will not work. So back to the drawing board.....

nashman, does the TIS system describe programming of the customizable features? That is what I want to do, not any physical disabling. If TIS describes the programming, I would sign up to get that.

Let us know,
Jim

I don't have that section of the TIS yet. I did check in the owners manual and it does state it has an "OFF" setting. See last page of attached. I'll be signing up for another TIS session soon. So, if you want to wait I'll check and post any procedures here.

FYI this is the customizable features section of the owners manual.

I asked my dealer this morning about this, and he said it CAN be done, but they wouldn't do it citing liability concerns. Guess I can't blame them.

I wouldn't take that from my dealer. It clearly says in the manual that it can be done by the dealer. My dealer is willing to do it, and they said I would just have to sign something. I just haven't made it in there yet.

I do blame them just like I blame my dealer. I am in Alaska so I have one dealer to choose from in Anchorage..... they won't do it. The manual says specifically these options can be revised by your dealer - then the dealer needs to abide by that. They sold the vehicle.

I have sent in a complaint to Toyota (dealer said if they get an email from Toyota saying it is OK then they will do it). I haven't heard back after weeks. I am guessing that accelerator and 460 issues have them kind of busy :)

Well my salesman was full of sh*t - imagine that - and could not do it for free. The service adviser says if it is in the manual, they will do it, but I am not paying $58 for it. I'll wait till some smart person figures it out and posts it on the internet.

I tried it and it didn't work for me.

yeah, before starting this thread, I tried every variation on that theme that I found - with your foot on or off the brake, with the vehicle running or just key on, buckling the driver or passenger seat belt, waiting 10 or 15 seconds to buckle, etc

The dealer can turn the seat-belt chime off as well as about 20 to 30 other features (i.e. look in the back few pages of your manual for the main list) once they hook it up to their computer. I spoke with my dealer/service department about this when I purchased the vehicle. He told me drive the vehicle for a few weeks and make a list of all the features that piss me off and the feature that I would like to have turned on or adjusted and then come back in and he will hook up the computer and let me do as I wish for free.

Dealer here is great to work with (e.g. gotta love Idaho, oh yah)

That's alright, go ahead kick me when I'm down.

What can I say, but my dealer (Fred Haas Toyota Country in Tomball, TX) sucks. Maybe that will shame them into doing the right thing! (But I doubt it.)

When you go in for your next oil change, just ask the service rep to do it.
