Getting Rid of the Seat Belt Chime

Well, I've been to 3 dealerships and all have told me, "sorry we can't we might get sued!" The seatbelt chime was annoying on the test drive, however, I figured I could disable it like on my 2007 Tacoma and didn't think much about it.

I wish I would have negotiated it on my 2011 4runner I bought last week!

I was having a nice introductory meeting with my local Toyota service manager (not the dealership I bought from...), and he very politely indicated that he would not turn it off due to safety issues, but he was willing to run it by the dealership's legal arm to see what they said.

Then, when one of his service techs got called into the office to get the info on the other items I wanted worked on, the topic was brought up again in passing and the the tech said that he was doing it all the time for Tundra owners, which effectively green-lighted the request and it was subsequently performed without issue.

I know others have indicated that sometimes it's who you talk to that matters - Just another story to verify this point.

For what it's worth, the flashing light stays on, just the chime goes away (at least for me), so there may be wiggle room with the safety aspect using this information.

It really is amazing the BS being spewed but the dealers. Including mine who swore up and down that they were not allowed to do it....can't be done....tried but failed to do it.....

Luckily I researched the issue and waited until my 2011 LTE was ready to be picked up - I told my dealer that unless they turn the damn thing off I am walking away from the deal. Once he understood that I was dead serious....within 15 mins it was off.

I don't mind being lied to but it annoys the hell out of me that they think I'm dumb enough to believe their lies.

If this thread is worth anything it is to inform new owners to require dealerships to perform the procedure prior to pick-up as a condition of the sale - If it saves just one owner the trouble some have encountered it will be a success.

Pretty weird/cryptic/definitive statement from Toyota Corp, by the way...

the buzzer should be able to be unpluged/ disconnected right? does anyone have the wiring diagram for the seat belt chime? or the location of it?

Just for the record, they can only turn off the "10 mph" reminder chime (the one that most annoyed me). The ignition startup chime (5 or 6 dings) remains operative and is no big deal to me.

My dealer turned it off with no questions.

100% wrong. Mine makes not a sound after the dealer turned it off.

um... I don't know about "100% wrong".

The dealership turned off the seat belt chime in my 4Runner. It still chimes 4-6 times when I turn on the ignition. After the initial chimes its silent.

The technician gave me a printout from the techstream computer to confirm all the setting changes.

Your dealer can do it or tell you how to do it. Numerous dealers have done so if you search throughout this thread.

Buzzer off

My local dealer turned mine off today without a question. They also did a couple of other custom settings that I highlighted in the back of the manual. They did charge me for a half out labor, which sucks. I must be the only one that has had the custom settings changed at the dealership as they seemed unfamiliar with all the customizable options:banana:

my wife called to schedule the 5k service and asked if they would turn off the seatbelt chime and they said no citing the liability excuse. before i took the truck in i printed off the customizable features section from the online manual and checked off all the things i wanted done. i handed the info to the service clerk to give to the mech. no one said a word about it and it is done, no more chime.
they did tell me that they would have to charge me to make the changes and i told them that if i knew that i had an option to make changes i would have done it when i bought the truck but i didn't find out untill after reading the manual. they told me to go talk to the sales manager which i did and he took care of it for me free of charge.

Just thought I would add my input. I bought the below cable/software, but the software was jacked up on the mini cd for some reason so I downloaded version 7.12 off the web and it included instructions for how to activate it. download Link below for those of you needing the software:

Software 7.12 download + activation (does require XP32bit , VM will work):
