Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

Yeah right. Go search out Bodie the dogs thread and see what trusting a general shop to make decisions for you gets.
Either learn everything about it so you can advise the shop properly or take it to a dedicated 4WD shop with experience on Toyota's. You do realize they probably will have to cut up your truck to fit the 285s right? If I were you i would learn something first.

Agreed.

I have a TRDP, so all of the cutting was done at the port and I still went with 275s only after I had 265s installed and took careful measurements to make sure it wouldn't rub if I went bigger.

Despite that, I occasionally hear a noise from the front right tire when going over speed bumps that I'm 95% sure is something other than tire rub, but it still bugs me that it might be tire rub (that side had more clearance). I'm glad I didn't go 285.

I've spent 3 years researching what vehicle to buy, which culminated in the purchase of a 2017 trd off road premium...

I decided to let the dealer's accessory shop take care of it....

So after lurking on this forum and reading through tons of build and mod guide threads, I made some decisions that I think will 1. make me happy 2. gain the approval of more experienced forum members....

Letting the shop figure out what makes up the rest of the kit.

None of these statements make any sense taken together. I think you would be much better served by both doing more research online speaking to some locals in person about their setups.

Have you seen examples of this shop's work? Other builds? Community reputation?

Quality parts and labor don't come cheap but walking in with a blank check to a lot of shops and saying "make it work" can set you up as an easy mark. At least try to get some advice from someone wth experience who doesn't have a vested interest in how much money they're going to make off you.

I was wading through all of the good information here, and noticed that the Hubgarage.com offset and back spacing link is no longer valid from the first post. The domain is up for sale.

Having read about 500 posts about BFG ko2 275s and then taking the plunge and getting them, I think the the 275/70R17 row should be yellow. Seems about half the people who are running them have had to make minor mods (me included) and the other half are living with slight rubbing. There is a third half that don't have any rubbing but they are in the minority :-)

That would be 3 "halfs"

First post here as a new member. I guess I am in that third/half category that hasn't had any rubbing issues. Couple of weeks ago I purchased a 2016 trail edition with KDSS and I just installed the 275 BFG K02 all-terrain's. Other than the tires this truck is completely stock. I've been very pleased with these tires so far and have not had one bit of rubbing on the vehicle. I have not yet however taken it off road and fully flexed the suspension yet. That may possibly reveal some rubbing though I'm not very concerned about it. My other vehicle is a Jeep Grand Cherokee that has some minor rubbing due to larger tires and it does not affect off roading performance whatsoever. So far I am 100% pleased with the BFG all-terrain's! I would highly recommend them.

I got 275/70/r17 cooper at3 from that discount tire direct deal and there's been no rubbing on my stock tep.

Anybody know if Cooper Discoverer A/T3 in 265/70R17 will fit with no problem?

Anyone?

Oh, the chart? On the first page? And the row that's marked "265/70/17"... Yeah, it's green. So it should be good? or nah? :deadhorse:

So it's all gravy. Thanks 1engineer for compiling the information, making this post, and engaging in the stimulating discussions. I ran the gamut from looking at stock replacements, to going up in size, back to sticking with stock.

And for completeness sake, Cooper Discoverer A/T3 265/70R17, OEM Trail wheels, Stock height, Magnetic Gray Metallic : Fits with no rubbing. :D

With a stock setup (stock wheels, no spacers, stock suspension) there is no possible way for rubbing to occur as long as caster is within limits.

Are you still running stock wheels? The common denominator with people having issues (2 halves) is either aftermarket wheels or spacers. The third half with no issues are the people running them with stock wheels. So although according to your data 100% of the people are having issues, I bet the 50% who aren't have stock wheels.

The chart is correct, but that is why there is a disclaimer on it about when running aftermarket wheels or spacers all bets on fitting with not rubbing are off.

Even 275's will fit without rubbing. Just installed 275 70r 17 LRC Cooper AT3.

Stock wheels = No rub with 275's.

This thread is intended to be a reference point for all of you that are looking to change tire size. First here are a few links to get you on the right path...

...I have included known data regarding our 5th Gen OEM wheels in the table below. Have fun and happy hunting!
***UPDATE*** Added OEM TE wheel backspacing information

I know I'll probably get ripped for this question and the answer likely exists somewhere in the 14 pages of this thread, but is there a reason that 'stock' TRD wheels were not included in the notes below the table regarding backspacing of OEM rims?

I'm guessing it's likely because they are the same backspacing as the SR5 wheels, but considering the TRD wheels often rub right off the boat, I'm thinking perhaps the numbers are different.

Cheers for the helpful table!

The Pro was not released when I conceived the table. If someone would give me the data I would include it on the table. Nobody has asked nor volunteered the information yet

Per Slee Offroad:

Specifications:

17x7 TRD Wheels
Part: PTR20-35110GR + BK
Offset - 4mm
Backspacing - 4.25"

can someone "own" me on this subject. I have been reading and what seemed to take me forever to understand in the car world with offsets now is totally upside down with backspacing.

I have TRD Pro wheels right now which is 7 inch wide 4mm offset and 4.25" backspacing. Ok I get all of that.

I want to go to Method NV wheels which are 8.5 inch wide, 0mm offset and 4.72" backspacing.

When I go here... Wheel Offset Calculator | 1010Tires.com Discount Online Tire and Wheel Store type in the specs its states 15mm less inner clearance and extend 23mm out more. Ok still on board as this is same with car wheels with poke and "stance life" stuff --

1st question - backspacing is close, I am positive I can fit these but the NV wheels will TAKE UP 0.5" more toward strut correct? (so that accounts for 0.5" of the 1.5"... yes? the other 1" will stick out from my existing TRD wheels because then we have 0.5 in back PLUS 1.0 out front = 1.5" width difference.

Is this correct?

Throw another variable. I am running 1.25" spacers on the TRD wheels. So lets take the backspacing out of the equation because im pretty sure you just take 4.25-1.25 for the spacer now and you have 3" backspacing. For offset or sticking out, can I assume the TRD wheels will be sticking out 0.25" more then what the NV wheels will?

I looked at it with offset calculator (32mm for 1.25") 4mm - 32mm = -28mm
Calculator states the NV wheels will be 9mm less "poke" from the sides then the TRD w/ spacers. (9mm = 0.3" ~ close to the 0.25" i assumed)

Is this correct? Or did I fail offset school....

Looks like these are the correct numbers, from two different sources:

Diameter: 17"
Width: 7"
Offset: +4mm
Backspacing: 4.16"
1engineer, I think you should add this to the table notes, as I recently saw the issue come up in another thread...

Sorry if I can't answer your question in depth, but I didn't see you mention whether you plan to remove the spacers with the method wheels or not? I assume you would?

I only ask because I had Method NV wheels on 285/70r17 Toyo RT tires mounted on my 4runner today on stock suspension. I have ordered and planned to use 1.25" spacers once my lift comes in, however after seeing my stance with the new wheels and tires I'm thinking they may not be needed, and could potentially look terrible (or maybe awesome, not sure)

While you're positive you can run them fine, id just like to confirm that my setup with those wheels and they tires I have work well. I did the fender liner mod, removed mud flaps, and trimmed a sliver off the front bumper, and did a pretty aggressive test drive around my area with no rubbing. They may run if I was to try full flex type of stuff, but for regular driving I foresee zero issue. May modify the bumper more once I get the vehicle more off-road oriented and ready to do some aggressive trails.

Right now I'm just looking hard to see what spacers would look like on a 4runner with 0mm offset wheels. Haven't found any yet.

Seen this question about tire fitment come up alot so I thought I would leave this photo here...

285/70/17 with no lift - Rubs a little. Trimmed front edge of bumper and rubs a bit on the mud flap. Easily fixable.
