Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

Seen this question about tire fitment come up alot so I thought I would leave this photo here...

285/70/17 with no lift - Rubs a little. Trimmed front edge of bumper and rubs a bit on the mud flap. Easily fixable.

I did the exact same thing with mine. Removed the front mud flaps which I hated anyway. Didn't want to trim so I installed a 3" ToyTec lift. Guess what? Still had to trim the exact same spot I would have if I didn't lift it.

Looks like these are the correct numbers, from two different sources:

Diameter: 17"
Width: 7"
Offset: +4mm
Backspacing: 4.16"

1engineer, I think you should add this to the table notes, as I recently saw the issue come up in another thread...

And, as a sample of one, just installed 275/70R17 Cooper AT3 Load C on my full TRD build with TRD wheels, and they definitely rubbed at full lock. If my truck had had the TSB done at the port for rubbing, they would not have rubbed (265s did not rub).

New Limited Change to 18's ASAP

Have a new limited. See pics. 5th generation with 20" 245 60 20's.
Want to change to 275 65 18's using a Fuel Maverick Rim 18X9.
Would like to use a Toyo AT II
DO NOT WANT TO LIFT!
DO NOT WANT RUB!
What Offset so that tire will tuck under fender. I do not want it to be outside.
Any comments please, i.e, any other tire size that will give a more comfort, performance, and look more appealing. Thanks ahead of time for input. :yo:

Sorry to sound ignorant but what does "TSB done at the port" mean? I see a lot of guys mention work done at the port. Sorry for not knowing....

TRD Pros often rub with the stock TRD wheels, so they issued a TSB to trim about 3/4" off the fender to prevent it. The TSB is performed at the port when the TRD parts are installed.

Thanks for the info, I thought TSB was usually for a computer issue. Now it all makes sense. You guys are awesome and quick to reply to all my questions. They install all the TRD parts at whatever port that they show up in? I'm guessing that would be Houston Port for me. I ordered mine in April but changed my mind and wanted to add the rear pullout shelf. The dealer told me that it was too late to make any changes and it would put me at the back of the line. How accurate is this? Im hoping that with The TSB done I can also fit some 285's under it.

Anyone local in the SoCal (HB) region want to help me trim/adjust my liner/fender/etc to eliminate the slight rub i get when I am in reverse?

I put some 275/70/R17 on my 17 TRD-ORP last week and instead of returning and going to a smaller size, I thought I'd ask here if anyone is local and has the necessary tools and experience to adjust things to get rid of the rub.

I don't have any tools or experience with auto work or I'd try it myself. :help:

There is a pack of your favorite beer in it for ya!

Can someone help me decide if 255/80/17 AT tires will fit with a 3.25" lift? I don't plan on doing any other mods at the time of the install of the lift other than the diff drop kit. I want to fill out the wheel well as best as possible. Thanks for the help.

You're basically limited to about 3" of lift with our trucks. Tires will fit no problem as long as you put them on the right wheel. What wheels are you looking at?

Stock TRD Off Road wheels. 17x8 if I'm remembering correctly.

17x7 and they will probably be fine with out any rubbing or even a lift unless you plan to wheel it. I:jk:f anything, you'll have to trim the lower inner lip of the front bumper. With that said, you really will not know for sure until you try. Every truck is different, what works for you may not work for the next guy.

Sweet, thanks for the help man. Much appreciated :thumb:

This thread is intended to be a reference point for all of you that are looking to change tire size. First here are a few links to get you on the right path:

Wheel Backspace & Offset - Truck Wheel Sizes - Truckin' Magazine This article will help you understand the concept of wheel offset and backspacing.
http://www.tyresizecalculator.com/tyre-wheel-calculators/wheel-offset-backspace-calculator This is a chart on offset and backspacing.

I have included known data regarding our 5th Gen OEM wheels in the table below. Have fun and happy hunting!
***UPDATE*** Added OEM TE wheel backspacing information

This chart was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the post!

2016 T4R SR5P

Just bought some Cooper HT Plus for street tires. Next to my Toyo AT2's - kinda hard to say the Cooper HT Plus aren't pretty darn close to the AT2's in terms of being an all terrain tire. I was hoping for a bit more "street" tire since I'll have a mud tire on the other wheels. I'll update with a review once I get them mounted and put some miles on them. The AT's are almost worn out at 20k miles.

AT2's are 285/70/17 and the HT Plus are 275/60/20.

Can we talk about wheel offset? Because as good as the tire specs are, if you're changing wheels also you're getting a vastly different configuration from stock if you're changing the offset.

Is there a good way to calculate your chance of rubbing/extensive modification by cross referencing various combinations?

i.e. 265/70/17 with 17x9 wheel et 0 4.5" backspacing = no rub
i.e. 265/70/17 with 17x9 wheel et-10 3.5" backspacing = no rub
i.e. 265/70/17 with 17x8 wheel et -24 3.5" backspacing = rub

There's a member on here selling 17x9 wheels at -38et/3.5"bs...that's the most aggressive offset I have seen on this forum, but I'm wondering if I could make it work without a bmc and maybe some 265s or 275s. But I feel brain-dead when trying to do the math.

I'm also trying to use this calculator from the first post - http://www.tyresizecalculator.com/tyre-wheel-calculators/wheel-offset-backspace-calculator

But the thing is, I can't figure out how to make it tell me what the acceptable offset range combined with tire size is good for the 5th gen. Perhaps it comes down to trial and error using literal application, seeing what works.

If it helps my SCS wheels rub with stock tires. I have a 2016 TE. The wheels are 17x8.5 and offset is -10 and back spacing is 4.3"

I see 285/70/17 is in the yellow.... Has anyone put this size on without a lift and had success without having to modify the wheel wells? I eventually want to put a lift on the vehicle but I am going to have to do tires first. Would a 275 be better for stock?
