Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

Ah well IMO get a decent wheel & tire because the chance of needing are fairly slim , but i would say keep it within 1 size of what you're running ! So my spare is a Brig 285 but have Coopers atp on a 17x7.5 wheel matching wheel not tire ! If that makes any sense ?

Ahh so matching rim but tire can be cheaper? Yeah I know it's slim, I have both air and tire repair kit.. Just rather be prepared than not.

Appreciate the knowledge

Quick question here. I've done a lot of research and found a lot of conflicting info. I've looked at the chart and know that I 'should' be fine with stock tires (for now) on a 17x9 wheel with stock offset. (Many wheels for these trucks seem to be 9's.) The Hoss 2 I'm looking at, along with a couple others, have -12mm offset. Without any modifications or cutting, will this present a problem? Guy at Discount seemed concerned that there would be rubbing. What about with a 275 tire in the future?

Has anybody tried 265/60r20 at the stock height? Any rub? Looks like it is only a bit taller than the common 275/55r20. I wanted a bit more rubber on the sidewall.

Lift doesn't make any difference in rub. That's a common misconception. In the front of IFS vehicles - the lift does nothing but change initial static height (assuming not long travel or bracket lift). So the same range of motion through the suspension cycle remains as it was stock. If it fits with a 3" lift - it also fits stock.

That said - yes I have 275 70 20's. They're taller than 285/70/17's by just a bit and narrower by just a bit. Yes they do rub on the front bumper cover/fender liner unless you do the fender liner/bumper cover cut mod. It's basically exactly the same as fitting 285/70/17's. Overall - they're very similar in size. Here's a side by side pic of a worn out 285/70/17 Toyo AT2 and a new 275/60/20 Cooper HT Plus both mounted and aired up. The Toyos are on OEM Trail wheels. The Coopers are on OEM Limited 20" wheels. Good luck with whatever you choose.

So I'm guessing if I plan to lift my runner, but I'm going to get tires first (limtied on funds, so it will be awhile before I lift it) then I should go with 285/70/17?

I drive a 2013 4runner sr5, I lifted it 2.5" using some bilstein shocks, added 17" black method wheels(same size as stock), and 275/70/17 BFG A/T K02. I had some rubbing with those when I was reversing and had the wheel at full crank. It was an easy fix, just some very minor trimming. My recommendation would not to go bigger than that unless you want to do some real kind of trimming to make room for the tires.

well I must be a dummy....but why is it that people say they get rubbing in reverse at full lock but not fwd?

The rubbing is mostly on the rear lip of the front bumper edge. When you're in reverse the suspension flexes some and it hits that area.

Don't fear the rub. Dremmel, masking tape, 10mm wrench, knife and good to go. Went 285/70R17 ridge grappler, 121Q. Removed mud flaps... They're lame

Anyone know if I should expect any rub from 285/70/17 ridgegrappler on a Trd pro with stock wheels and a toytec 2 inch lift? I’m running a shrockworks bumper and no front flaps so my main concern is backspacing and rubbing on uca.

You should be fine, but every vehicle is different. Just make sure your caster is on the higher end.

I did it also. No rubbing on the BM, only the front fender liner at lock in reverse. It all depends on what tire you run. I ran a KO2 which runs on the smaller side of the 285 range and I had a 17x8 wheel with 4.5" BS and 0 offset. I can tell you a 285 Ridge Grappler is quite a bit bigger than a 285 KO2 and would have rubber much worse. Anything can be done with enough trimming.

That's interesting about the Nittos...I was at the dealership this weekend and they had 265 Nittos on some of their blacked out modded T4Rs..and honestly they looked much bigger (of course more aggressive) than the 265 Dunlop or Bridgestones...kinda made me think about staying with OEM size after seeing those.

Exactly! I was driving by a semi with 4Rs loaded up on it and I almost got in an accident trying to read tire sizes because they look so huge! I’m thinking of doing the same and just maybe getting some spidertrax to get a wider stance!

17x9 with -12 offset

looking to get 17x9 with a -12 offset ( that's what FUEL wheels offers )
with a 275 70 17 bfg ko2

wonder if a -12 pushing the wheel and rubber further out should give me more clearance ( don't want any rubbing issues )
what do you guys think ?

Since I have seen you post numerous times asking, I will answer. I am running a 17x9 with a -12 offset and originally I ran a 285/70x17 tire. I did have to trim the front of the fender well out to clear. With the 275, as long as your alignment is good, you should get away with no rubbing.

In my opinion the 275 is a bit on the narrow side for a 9" wide wheel. I would shoot for an 8" wheel with that width. Looking at the BFG website they say the max wheel for that is a 8.5" width. But just my opinion.

yes I read that the recommendation for the 275 70 17 is 7-8.5" wheels
so I decided to have them mounted to the stock 7.5" wide TEP wheels and they bubble out nicely , fit perfect
now just to offset the wheels outward about 1.25" with a quality spacer :spider:

Finally working my 2011...the SR5 wheels are being powdercoated at the moment, and when they return. 285's Duratracs are going on them.

Going to push the fender forward while I am waiting for the powdercoat...I forget....is the blue painters tape about where the outer portion of the tire would rub on a 2011 (with 2.5 inch lift)?
