i have it listed on vadriven.com for $8100, its high but they low ball the **** outta ya so they can lowball me to a reasonable price. I was looking more for trades but i really just want to fix it...

If I were you I would try and fix it. I've thought about selling mine a time or two but don't think I could ever replace it.

I just said screw the gas gauge and got a scangauge II. I like it better, and at $159 for guaranteed-to-work-ness, I think it is cheaper than any fix to the actual gas gauge.
I feel you on the gas prices though. I drive >80mi/day. I love the runner, but I am only getting about 15mpg right now and it hurts me.

You should second guess this. Saying 35 miles on a quarter tank was when reality kicked in doesn't make any sense. That statement tells you almost nothing about your gas mileage. I can go <25 miles and the gauge shows a 1/4 tank gone...that doesn't mean I get 100 miles on a tank (or have a gas leak). If you were to say 17mpg is too low and you need 30mpg, that's another story and totally understandable. Track your miles from fill-up, divide by gallons put in the next time, and you've got yourself a more accurate number.
Do you think I got less than 75 miles on this tank? Of course not. I got 77:
Hope you line up a job soon. Unemployment can definitely suck.

For me buying a more efficient daily driver would mean I can keep the miles off my aging 3rd gen (165k on it right now) plus a couple more years from my tires would be nice so it would make sense for me to buy an older Honda Civic or the like and use it for around town and back and forth to work and just use the 4runner for winter driving and weekend trips.
To the OP, if you are unemployed you dont have to go anywhere so gas mileage is irrelevant right? 
I used to do the extra car thing, but once you pay insurance on that other vehicle, maint, etc. Its a wash.
If your married its easier. Give the wife the cute little economical 4cyl and snag it as necessary.
Our other car is a Toyota Matrix that gets great mileage, but I dont really care to drive it especially with the paw print license plate surround and the PUG sticker in the back window. If things get real nasty, I will have to swallow my pride and start driving it. Its kind of foolish, but my wife drives about 2 miles to work in the Matrix, and I drive 20 miles in my lifted 4runner.

You got something going on in your engine. My mpgs dropped to ~8 pretty suddenly and I recently found out both my heads were cracked while they were rebuilding my engine. Not that that's your problem, it could be a lot of things, but something isn't right in there for you to get that low of fuel economy. Is your engine missing/stumbling/hesitating when you accelerate?

I have 2 kids, taking them to school and picking them up and one of them has health issues so I have to take him to the specialist 50 miles away...so thats where i go..

For less than half the cost of a Scangauge you can get an Ultra Gauge. Better display than the SG, too. I've been running an Ultra Gauge since October and I love it. My favorite feature is the "DTE" (Distance To Empty) display, which has become my de facto gas gauge. Once you get it calibrated (takes about 2 tanks) the thing is amazingly accurate. Also allows you to "hyper mile" if you want to - you can really see what kinds of things affect your MPG.

This is EXACTLY what I did: Bought a 97 Mazda Protege with a 1.5l engine and a 5 speed tranny for $900. Has a 14.5 gallon tank and gets 30 mpg in the city (on the highway it can hit 35 - 36.) I wish I could tell you the MPG "trend" on the Protege but I can't because I've only filled it with gas twice.
Last time I filled it was January 29th and it still has half a tank!
Not only does it save money on gas, it saves wear on the 4runner (and on the tires, in particular.)
EDIT: Wanted to add, the other nice thing about having a DD is that I can drive my 4runner primarily on long trips which increases my MPG. Wife and I took a day trip to CO Springs on Saturday, my average MPG for the trip was ~19.5. When we went to Breckenridge a couple of weeks ago it was about 21.5! Compare this with my city MPG last week when we had so much snow and ice on the roads that I had to drive the 4r, and much of the time in 4wd. My MPG avereaged around 14.5!

Well I was pulling a small trailer the other weekend picking up a new swing set for my daughter and the CEL came on, p0171, went to Advanced and got a can of MAF cleaner and i think cleaning the MAF helped big time and was my problem, it has been getting about 18mpg recently, thank god, just in time for gas prices to go back up!! Guess I'll keep her now!
