Help me pick an exhaust!!

Hey folks,

As some of you know, my exhaust crapped out again, and I'm need of a new setup. Currently, my muffler is still working, but it rotted off where it bolts to the tailpipe, and now I'm getting alot of ice buildup under the truck, from the heat being generated.





I'm looking to go with Flowmaster full Stainless Steel muffler, but not sure what SERIES to get. I'm looking for something with a little more of a deeper sound than stock, but don't want to wake the neighbors driving in my driveway at night.... :D

Can any of you guys with Flowmaster or other setups, post videos, pics, or opinions on the setups you have??

Flowmaster ... I belive 40 series is pretty common although I'm not sure which exact series I have.

I highly recommend you install a stock Tundra resonance silencer (used is fine) about 1-2" in line behind the muffler.

I did that and it has worked out pretty great. I have a throaty sounding exhaust but NO highway drone. :usa2:
 
I haven't had a Flowmaster exhaust simply because everyone around me has one and I wanted something different. I do have a very healthy sounding Borla ProXS dual outlet muffler that just sounds awesome. Its got a nice deep aggressive sounding tone thats really not that loud till you step on it, then it can get a little loud. I think it sounds better than most Flowmasters. My opinion might be considered biased tho.

Why the Tundra Resonance Silencer?? Is it to get rid of some raspy sounds??
 
I'd go with the longest Borla XR-1 muffler they sell. That way, it will be fairly quiet while sounding good. JBA also makes a nice exhaust system that is decently priced.

I'd like to know more about this as well. Any part numbers, pics of installed, info on what it does?

My exhaust damper rusted off and at idle the exhaust rattles. The Tundra silencer probably doesn't help my problem but would like to know what it would do for a 4runner.
 
I'd highly recommend a BAMuffler from dirty deeds industries, I have zero drone, and developed the most amount of power on my current setup. The BA and borla is how a proper exhausts should be setup.
 
Just weld in a 18 inch magnaflow and leave the stock piping. I've cm been running mine for 5 years. Last year I noticed a small crack in it and had it welded up. I've read there not the best muffler quality but there straight through and its loud enough to really get your attention getting up to speed but still quite in cab. And silent once up to speed with no drone. I've had them on the last 4 trucks and there great. Had a trd exhaust on my 4runner that blew out in 50k miles..

Don't get a flow master. Chambered no hp increase over stock and drone galore in the super 40 models especially.
 
On my 3.4 Tacoma, I have a full Borla exhaust. It is awesome!

I recently discovered a small leak in the factory muffler of my 97' 4Runner and was thinking about replacing it with the same exhaust that is on my Tacoma. BUT I do not have $650.
 
Magnaflow

My .02,

After listening to a ton of video clips on Youtube, I was not a fan of the Flowmaster 40 or 44 series for the 3.4 yota motors. I had flows before on my mustang but i just thought it sounded to much like a ricer on our nice trucks. (No Offense anyone). i went with magnaflow #11255, 18 inch muffler. Nice deep sound but no too loud unless i get on it. installed it about a month ago and im still very pleased.
 
I've heard bad things about Magnablow.... however I do agree... I like the sound that they generate.... my other issue is availability... not too many options around here, without shipping, and they like to charge an arm and a leg for stuff up here.

I was just going to go to my local Canadian Tire store, and get them to install one.... which is why I opting for Flowmaster, as they carry them in stock.

That being said.... I still want some options, and may just try another route... so keep the opinions coming!

P.S: Post up some videos if you got them! :)

I've heard mixed reviews on them all. Check out amazon, when i bought mine it was 10 bucks cheaper than every shop and online store i checked.....plus free shipping. got it in 3 days
 
I had a flowmaster 50 series on my V8 Tundra and it sounded AWESOME. Having said that, the 3.4 is a completely different animal. There is a fine line on these between ricey and throaty. IMO there is nothing wrong with a flowmaster and based on your location if that's what they carry then go for it.

Keep in mind the lower the series the louder the exhaust. The 40 series is there loudest street muffler before going down into the drag/race mufflers only. If you dont' want to be obnoxious then consider stepping up to the 50 series or the 50 series Delta Flow. The delta flow adds some chambers to help with resonance and volume.

If I were going to put a flowmaster exhaust on my 3.4 I would do the 50 series. Now if you want and can afford the shipping then I would lean towards the borla xs, it sounds better but it's much more $$. Just remember sound is personal preference too. :)

I've had the same muffler since last summer. Same experience too. It has a deep tone to it, but is barely noticeable when cruising down the highway.

It was that thread that alerted me to the issue with longer case Magnaflow mufflers. It is the reason I looked very closely at numerous models of Magnaflow mufflers, before going with the model I did.

One thing I noticed when examining Magnaflow mufflers, is that the longer case (22" case or longer) mufflers, that I personally looked at, had a two-piece tube running through them that looked poorly joined together. The failures of these two-piece tubes I've read about in that thread, and elsewhere, is where people seem to be having issues with Magnaflow.

The 18" case #11255 has a single-piece tube running through it, so it should prove to be much more durable than the longer two-piece tube mufflers.
 
I would suggest the Borla 40664/5 Turbo XL.
Its the largest Borla that fits, good sound, little to no drone at highway speed, quiet at idle, but when you give gas it has that nice Borla rumble.
All stainless, good warranty and I think they will honor the warranty better than Magnablow.

If you are replacing the whole system then a Borla 14659.
Which I think you can usually get for around $560

I think there are mixed reviews and issues with all of them. At the end of the day this is a man made product that is exposed to extreme temperature and atmospheric conditions on a daily basis. Plus you live up where there is snow and i'm sure salted roads. And let's not forget bashing it up on rocks while wheeling. It's going to get beat up.

The good thing is that exhaust isn't terribly expensive so taking a gamble isn't that scary. It's only a few hundred bucks installed, it's not like its $3000
 
Third vote for the Magnaflow 18". I've had mine for over a year and still happy with it. As said above, you can find negative reviews about every brand.

Thats thread is exactly why I went with the 18" as well. At the end of the day it is all personal preference on what you like best. Good Luck finding and deciding on what u want.
 
I've been wanting to get a sound clip of my Borla ProXS exhaust. I guess I'll have to do that here soon. I LOVE the way it sounds! The wife and daughter even like it too so that's kinda like a bonus.
