Here's Some Help with Navigation Install

ok. I HAD the problem until I took a "sick day" (pronounced as: p-r-o-j-e-c-t d-a-y)

So, I started with this configuration. pin 11 going to the "+" audio signal and pin 12 going to the "-" of the audio signal on my ext amplified speaker. (the speakers are just a clip on speaker from a dell fp1901 flat panel monitor that I had a few spares of--few spare speakers, not monitors! ;): ) The power for the amplified speakers was from the feed going to the cigarrette outlet there in the center console.

With this configuration, I had horrendous (sp?) alternator whine and also quite a bit of the static/fuzz on the audio people are talking about. So I had two things to fix to make it clean.

Well, I went to my local radio shack and picked up a ground-loop isolator thing (cat #270-054) for $15.99 and was gonna pick up a cat #270-051 12v 10A powerline filter, but saw a clearance item on the shelf cat #270-030A for like $1.79. So I got that instead of paying the $15.99 I was gonna pay for the originally intended item.

So I came home with my ground loop isolator and 4amp (which is overkill for a small amplified speaker) noise filter kit. The noise filter kit had a transformer (referred to as a choke in the kit) and a small 220 microFarad 25V electrolytic capacitor. So I installed this on the powerline to the speakers in the way that is shown on the second page, second drawing. I'd scan it, but my scanner seems to have stopped responding after scanning that parts list a couple of days ago (this list). Then, I used one side of the ground-loop isolator for the audio from the nav to the speakers. I did this all with connectors such that I could pop any section out of the signal path just to test or if it stops working.

Needless to say, I now have an EXTREMELY quiet signal and WONDERFULLY sounding woman directing me around town... ;):

jkm2730 and steph280,
Your problem is, if I understand correctly your setup, you have not shielded or provided any ground (sig return) to you amp. The outputs from the NAV system are labeled - and + neither of these is a ground. The NAV system uses balanced outputs and the small amps we use to hear the signal use an more common unbalanced input that has a shield (also acts as a sig ground) and the active input sig.
The IVO- is not a shield nor is it a signal ground. It is an active output that is 180 degree out of phase with IVO+ Amps that employ a balanced input will require all three connections (Ground(shield) sig + and sig -. I hope that makes sense.

Try this connection.
Use shielded wire. The computer audio cables used between the audio expansion card to the CD work great, in fact the pins can be removed from the plug and plugged directly into the empty spaces for pin 11, 12,and 13. on the NAV plug R6 Make sure the shielded pin is placed in the pin 13 space. from the amp, connect the shield(ground) not power ground (eventhough that may be the same on the amp) to the shield connection on the NAV (pin 13 on R6). Then connect the amps audio/signal "in" to either(Not both) pin 11 or pin 12 on the NAV connector. Either one will work , they are the same signal level just 180 degrees out of phase with each other). You should now be ready to go, no ground loops causing squeals hum etc. The signal level will be down about 3 db from SOLARA/Camry OEM but should work just fine providing your amp has sufficient gain. With the amp I am using, I find a volume setting of 3 works just great at hyway speeds (120 Kph) and I still have lots of headroom if I happen to need more volume.

If the level is too low and you cant get enough volume, you may want to look into getting an amp with more umph (not power but gain)

Good Luck -TM-

First of all, thanks for the post. It makes perfect sense and verified my assumption of ground loop due to improper ground.

I am running this RadioShack amplified speaker powered with a 12v-9v cigarette power adaptor. Where would the shield ground be for this unit that needs to connect to pin13? Would it be one of the wire from the 1/8" headphone jack? Or the ground from the cigarette lighter?

Thanks again.

I don't have one of those units, they stopped making them so they are hard to find. Anyway if that jack is the "audio in" then the shield/ground will be the sleeve portion of the plug. The tip of the plug will be the "signal in" and should be connected to pin 11 OR 12 on the NAV connector R6. Hope that helps.

Let me know if this fixes your problem.

keep in mind that if you have a catalog number, your local radio shack should be able to look up other stores' inventories and have it transferred at no cost to you to their store. The ham community did this quite extensively when the digitraveler gps they had was being liquidated for like $25 or $30.

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a try soon.

This particular speaker is still being made. In fact our local RS just got more in stock, and they show in stock online as well. I think the 12v CB speaker was the one that was discontinued. This one runs on 9v and is considerably louder.

I tried a similar hands free car kit. Both the kit and the radio shack speaker had massive noise when powered from the car 12v. This leads me to believe there is some type of feedback from the nav's power into the 12v. I'm suprised it works in your setup without any static. I'll have to look more into this.

Thanks for sharing your setup.

Steph,

Do you have a AC power inverter in your 4runner and is it turned on? This could cause noise on the DC side.

This is actually in a Sienna. The AC inverter is built into the van, and is not powered up.

I think what Toy-man said makes perfect sense, it was my suspicion all along. I was going to get a ground-loop isolator which will fix this problem, but using pin13 is much neater.

Thanks,

Stephen

Toy Man,

Did you ever figure out what those additional pin outs on the stock amp were? I remeber you looking into it.

Thanks,

webshot.

No I never had a chance to go that far. The add-on amp is working so well right now. I will take a look around next time I am in there if I get a chance.

Navigation Synopsis?

After reading this extensive thread I want to make sure I have all of this straight.

I have the 2003 4Runner Sport with JBL 10 Speaker surround (no CD changer).

1. I need the Solara Nav.
2. The backlights are green versus orange.
3. Install is not too bad, need interface to speed sensor, etc. All done up front.
4. The voice will not work without an external speaker hooked up.
5. The Steering wheel audio controls will not work after the unit is installed.
6. The rear audio feature will not work after the unit is installed.

Can someone please tell me if I have all of this straight?
I've been looking at the after market products and it seems the most of these problems would still exist so I'm considering not even getting a nav due to the 10 speaker surround, steering wheel controls, and rear audio problems.

Thanks much!

Another Clarification

j0,

And for all this to work the only workaround needed with wiring, etc is for the external speaker for voice, correct? No workarounds needed for steering controls or rear audio?

Thanks!

anybody interested in a Solara NAV with "ORANGE" lights already installed? I'm thinking I might sell mine.

Thanks

dark-a is thinking about it.

Price is $1400 for everything, plus shipping.

details: 2004 Solara NAV w/2004 DVD map disc, GPS antenna, Custom fabed face plate for those of you who have the large opening in the console, Radio Shack 12v speaker for voice, Orange light's already installed. The unit is imaculate and in perfect working order.

thanks.

Webshot, Why are you selling the NAV?

Sound from NAV system - help needed

I have just installed in my 04 4runner with 10 speaker JBL system Navigation system I have bought at OEMVALUE.COM (Solara unit). It works perfectly, but I am still working on Sound that will tell me directions. I know that I have to connect amplified speaker to the 20 pin plug. Where do I connect those two wires? There are two rows of 10 pins each. Looking on the back of the unit with the plug pluged in from left to right where those two wires go?

Thanks

Luke

Speaker hook up

I believe the connections are:

+(pin 11) -(pin 12) coming out of the navigation unit (20-Pin plug).
