Update!

I finished my install of the Solara Nav in my 04 4Runner and it works great. All I have to do now is make a faceplate and add the external speaker. I would like to thank everyone that helped on this site. Esp, T4Runner, Toy-Man, Troy from OEMValue, Petegaz for his great detailed instructions, and everyone who helped post info. Thanks again!

I bought a similar motorola hands free kit. I guess my simple question is how do you test which wire is what??? I have a green wire and a white wire wrapped in a metal sheathing. I also have a brown wire, blue wire, and orange wire. The silver wire and black wire are for the mic. That much I could figure out. The others???? I have no clue about this stuff. Can anyone help? Here are some pics:

GPS Antenna

I glued my GPS antenna to the top inside of the dash to the left of my center speaker. It it right ubove the A/C duct and out of the way of all wires and metal. Works great. I get reception in underground parking garages too. Good luck.

Looks like the same unit I used (Motorola SYN8597B). When I did my wiring I would be a temp fix, but this units works so well it's turned out to be permanent. At lesat until I can again take the time to get under the dash and do some searching for a better way and not sure if I will have any luck.

I did not document my setup because I didn't think it would become a more permanent fix. From what I remember I used either the Green or White and the shield. I can't remember which - Green or White) but only one will work is connected to pin 11 on R5 and the shield should be connected to Pin 12 on R5.

While was putting my speaker back together I noticed a label on the back that stated input 10.8 - 16.0 volts, Output 4.4 - 6.6 volts DC that let me to believe there is some type of voltage reduction taking place in the cigarette plug assembly. There is a small circuit board in there with a LED and a ? poss resistor. If you want to hard wire this thing into the 4Runner like I did, I moved that circuit board to inside back of the speaker case (there is enough free room in there) so I would still get the voltage reduction.

I already moved the circuit board (w/ resistor) to the speaker housing assembly. I guess I'm getting confused at the "shield". Is the "shield" an actual wire?? Fore example, would the green be the signal, and the white be the shield. Or is the shield like the "negative" end??? Is a shield like an insulator??? I guess I need to brush up on my definitions...

once I figure out this shield thing, I should be good to go.

The shield wire is the "metal sheathing" wrapped around the Green and White wires you mentioned in your first picture. That is a Signal Ground (normally at electrical ground potential) and that is one of the two wires you need to hook to the Nav system. It performs two purposes: 1- it provides a return path for the signal; 2- it provides shielding to wthe wires to prevent extraneous noise, hum etc from getting into the amp.

Shield to pin 13 and one of the other two wires (Green and White)are audio in and the other is audio out. You want the audio in wire. I can remember which it is which but you should be able to test using trial and error. Once your hook up say the green wirte to pin 11 on the Nav R5, use the Nav system to see if it works. Here is an easy way, press the Menu button, followed by the Volume soft key on the screen, press a volume number "4" and if you hear the female American voice say "Guidance will be at this volume" youve got it, if not try the white wire on pin 11. Either pin 11 or 12 will work with no differance in performance or quality, I ended up using pin 11. I think I have all that right.

ACtually, no, you don;t get reception in underground parking garages. Notice the "GPS" indicator in the upper right.. it will go away in a garage. The Denso GPS unit Toyota uses is one of the best in the world... it knows where you are even without the GPS signal. The unit is quipted with gyros and speed sensors(well, it uses the vehical speed sensor.. we all know that)... when it does have a GPS signal it will calibrate itself so that it knows where you are without a GPS signal (using the other two inputs)... it is very acurate. The only time it has issues is when you drive or park on a slopped road (not a climb or decent, but a left to right or right to left slope (that is not a turn). No worries though.. as soon as it finds a GPS signal it will put you back where you belong on the map

got a question, I want a Nav system on my 05 sport, if it is not offered should i get the 4runner unit or the Solara one,,or doest it matter,,,Hopefully the wiring will be the same to the '04

That completely depends on which Radio you have. First.. you can;t get the "4Runner NAV" (unless something has changed for 05 and i am behind on my info)... so you need either a Camry or Solara. Which one depends on which sound system your car is equipted with.

the radio will be the single disk JBL 10 speaker unit, Dont see any use in spending the extra cash for the changer just to replace it

From some of the 2005-spec posts I have seen, it seems as if the 10-speaker option is gone, being replaced with the 8-speaker. This may mean that the new 4Runner nav unit will be the same 'unified' style that the Solara has... Need to wait and see. Don't order anything yet!

This opinion is supported by the rumor that 3rd row seating is supposed to be available with the Nav system in 2005. ( This was not possible in 2004 because 1/2 of the Nav system was installed over the right rear wheel well.)

tip for gps voice speaker

First off, a big thanks to petegaz and everyone else who has posted so much useful info on this site. My gps install would have taken weeks instead of hours without all your help. That said I'd like to offer my install solution for the external voice speaker. I took a powered computer speaker (complete with volume, treble, bass, mute) removed the 3" speaker from the housing which enabled me to then cut the housing with all the "guts" contained to a trim 4"x3" unit (which I placed under the passenger seat), made the appropriate connections from the input to the gps feed, hard wired a 12v adaptor to the cigarette lighter, and then wired the speaker output to the removed speaker which I placed the pop-out center storage area under the climate control. The 3" speaker fit perfectly in there. I drilled six small holes in the center of the piece in a hexagonal shape, which are hardly noticable but allow the sound to come through perfectly. This setup provides perfect volume and clarity from the center of the dash instead of muffled under the seat. I never used that middle compartment for anything anyway. Hope this helps someone.

I have a 2003 w/ the 10 speaker JBL. I have the ability to pick up a 2004 Solara Nav from a local salvage company who handled a wrecked Solara. My question deals with the cables needed for the install. Obviously there will be a need for the GPS Antenna, GPS Antenna extension wire (those items were unfortunately were not pulled). Are the Speed/Reverse Sensor Wires already built into the 4Runner or do I have to purchase those in addition to the above items for the install to work?

The speed signal and reverse switch wire can be tapped from various places in the truck. The speed sensor is available just below the head unit behind the a/c controls. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure about the best place to pick up the reverse lead. Search around for the wiring manual -- there's a link around here, and then do some hunting. You'll probably fiind it one or more of the junction blocks in the dash.

Then again, if you read through this thread, I'm pretty sure the answer is already in here somehwere...since all of these guys that already did the nav install would need those same signals.
