Hilux 167 snorkel for 3rd gens

Just had a coworker recommend spray epoxy. It would take the flex out of the rubber. Not a bad idea but seems a bit too permanent if I ever needed to remove the boot.

That could almost be one of those "You know you are a 3rd gen owner when..."

You know you are a 3rd gen owner when your local Home Depot associate avoids you like the plague and your cart contains hose clamps, Platidip, zip-ties, 2 inch PVC, and a marine grade deck-plate.

Sheesh we are a weird bunch....

exactly what i need to do... i've just been leaving my deckplate open. I do notice another pound or so of boost with the snorkel at speed.

Wait until you throw that deck-plate back on. You can really hear the draw of air at the snorkel head. I'm uncertain if even with the tube held open that the engine will be able to get enough air for the 2.2 inch pulley. I'll know soon though.

Pulled the trigger today, i used a slightly bigger hole saw than OP recommended so i had some wiggle room and was able to fit the snorkel without the big gap up front.

the rubber hose fitting part seems like a major hassle though, im going to investigate just modifying a generic intake hose.

I can't get a pic of them but I just used two heavy duty hose clamps meant for a dryer vent and a piece of dryer vent tin. Seems to be working well. I don't think the tin is doing anything so you may want to skip that part.

Hint is to make sure you have a bit driver for the clamp because getting a flat head on it at that angle is impossible.

Any of you supercharged with this kit? I am and have the deck-plate mod so I've never pulled all my air from the snorkel.....until last night. I put the lid on to get ready for a wheeling trip that could include water. That is where I found a problem. Under wide open throttle the demand for air for the engine is such that it collapses the rubber boot on the air-box. Almost killed my engine. Curious if anyone else had this issue?? I'm contemplating replacing the rubber elbow with PVC if I can figure out how to fir it in the narrow fender. Anyone?

I've had the same issue, not supercharged. Under full throttle at high rpm it sucks flat. I'll be looking into some ways to fix it, but for now i'm putting in the deck plate. Let me know if you find something that works.

Unless the intake 2.2 requires a larger intake tube than 3 inch which would mean you would need a larger custom throttle body I am not sure how this would be possible. Your intake is only as big as its smallest point. That rubber elbow is larger than 3" and the intake tube is 3" of volume so it seems all you need is some bracing or you could look into some spectre intake pieces.

I haven't had this problem becuse my intake slides farther into the tube making a brace for the vacuum.

The silver part which is a spectre 3" 45 deg elbow available at any crap zone parts store slides a good ways into the rubber.

Has anyone painted their's. I was thinking of painting it the same color as my bumpers and sliders. Any ideas or comments.

I would imagine you would need a lot of filler primer if you want it smooth or you could go with body filler and then sand/prime. Might take awhile but a proper paint job could look pretty sweet.

thanks for the comment. I was think of just primer it the then painting it.
I don't need it smooth.

I would use a plastic adhesion as well now that I think about it. It's just another can. Helps the primer bond to the plastic.

I'd use Plastic-dip on it. It adheres well to plastic and if you scratch it while playing in the bush...it would be very easy to touch up. And worst case...if you end up not liking it...you can peel it off and it will be just like new...win, win!!

It's a great deal if you ask me. One of my favorite mods......but far from the most expensive lol.

I installed this snorkel on my non-SC'd 4Runner and have the collapsing tube problem. I thought I had a bright idea by creating a coil out of galvanized solid hobby wire. I can't remember what gauge wire that I used. I wrapped it around a bottle to make the coil. But, the rubber tube is oval and my coil was round. So, I had to squash it to fit. It seemed to work at first. But, the tube eventually started collapsing again. On the positive, as soon as I release the gas the coil springs the tube back out.

Back to the drawing board... Maybe heavier gauge wire... Maybe clothes hanger wire.
