Hello, how many watts have you all drawn from the convenience plug? And for how long?

Watts = voltage x amps.

The circuit has a 15a fuse, so assuming 13 volts that makes 195 watts.

EDIT- I was assuming the 12v plug- sorry- I don't have the factory 120v A/C plug (I have a 1000W inverter).

If anyone wanted to know about the cig lighter plug ^^^^^ that's it. :)

IIRC...
The basic spec is: 400w engine off, in park...1000w engine running, in drive.
There is also another scenario of engine running, in park/neutral...thinking that drops you back down to 400w.

As to how long have I used mine? Probably only 2 times as power for a fluorescent trouble light for 30-40 minutes. Just got my truck end of August this year, so not alot of opportunity to use the AC Power.

Being an Electrical Engineer, I automatically thought of "convienence plug" as being the AC outlet from the Inverter.
You are always on top of it Antman...I applaud you.:wink2:
 
400 watts vehicle running/ 100 watts vehicle on acc.

I believe the plug in the armrest is good for only a 100 watts in both scenarios.

Reason for asking is that I have a small noisy genset. Thinking the A/C outlet on the truck might handle my needs quiter.
Looking to run specifically; inverter charger @ 500 watts.
Small tv @ 45 watts.
Misc. @ just a few watts.
For maybe three hours at a time.

Copied from my Owner's Manual for a 2013 TE. Prior page shows console power the same as the rear power outlet - 100/ 400w.

Looks like 400 at idle in park or N and only 100 when running. I would have expected to get 400w when running down the highway. Photo follows:

Here are the specs right outta the manual...

Maximum available capacity of the power outlet
■ While the vehicle is being driven
The maximum capacity of the power outlet is always 120 V AC/100W.
■ When the vehicle is stationary
The maximum capacity of the power outlet varies depending on
the position of the shift lever.
● The maximum capacity is 120 V AC/100 W when the shift lever
is in any position other than P or N.
● The maximum capacity is 120 V AC/400 W when the shift lever
is in P or N.
The maximum capacity of 400 W can only be restored by turning
the power outlet main switch off and then on again with the shift
lever in P or N.


I just knew someone would correct me

Looks like if you were to try and draw 500w, the protective circuit in the inverter would shut it off.
I know, what good is 400watts?
 
One day I will use the plus in my CC, I swear! I have used the plug in back a few times to blow up rafts for the wife and I to float on. I planned on using it for the big margarita blenders....but....a little one arrived, so...now the plug sits idle and the pull out tray makes a great diaper change table!
 
As Antman said, wattage of devices is determined by the formula P=IV, where P=power(watts) I=Current (amps) and V=voltage.

This is where everything gets tricky.... Typically, inverters are rated at PEAK wattage, not continuous. For example, a 1000W inverter may be capable of running a motor that draws an initial spike current at 1000W, but would be incapable of providing a continuous 1000W output for an extended period of time.

Long story short, if you're serious about prepping, buy a large aftermarket inverter - 3000W should be plenty for most normal situations. A word of advice when you're shopping for one though: be wary of how the manufacturer rates the output. I once bought a 2000W that was struggling to power lights in my job trailer - I contacted the manufacturer and they told me that the 2000W was based on the inverter having two recepticals that provided 1000W each, so I essentially had two 1000W inverters that were useless to me.

I'm now thinking it may be better to use the truck to charge spare batteries and an inverter for clean power. This will involve laying under the truck every time to plug in the trailer cable. Not the end all.....just getting to old (lazy) and was looking for the easiest way to have power while dry camping without the noise from the genset or risk running down the start battery. I've idled the 4runner for two hours using about 1 gallon of fuel (I can accept this). Only planning a handful of nights per season.

The alternator output depends on SR5, TE or LE and what options you have. Check the fuse rating for it.
