How To: AEM F/IC-6 Install, Tuning, and Help Thread

Forgot to include that it can control timing. Unfortunately you can only retard timing and not add it, but it does work very well.

So with Meth inj, the AEM can tune for it too, is that as long as it comes on at say 2# to 10# of boost. You just adjust the trims knowing that is will come on or is there a separate area to control in the AEM?

I'm not following what your asking I guess. Refer to the tuner as a FIC6 and the meth kit (also aem brand) as the meth controller

Opps, yes can the F/IC6 control the meth or do you just use the AEM Meth controller and tune the boost area...

Ok so.... tune fuel without meth in boost. Then install meth and retune knowing the Meth controller will add X at X# and pull back your fuel trim?
Sorry, I know this will make sense when I start tuning it...
Thanks

Gotcha no, that would be awesome, but there is not any system out there with the exception of a custom built megasqurit standalone that can do that. Basically it would be install FIC tune s/c, install and set meth and retune. You don't need meth with the FIC though unless you are going with a smaller pulley.

Like my 2.1? or Smaller........

Wow...after more than a year, I finally have gathered up everything I needed to install my supercharger...to include the URD 7th injector. While installing my supercharger, I also changed my TB, water pump, headers, belts, pulleys and all that fun stuff. Figured if I have it apart, I might as well do it all. Knowing this...I held off installing the URD 7th and kept the stock pulley on my supercharger. My thinking was, keeping things simple in case I had any problems...thus making any diagnosing much easier.

So a 1 1/2 - 2 years ago I was following a long in the "Supercharger" thread gathering info and the word around the camp fire was if you went with a smaller pulley (2.2 or 2.1) you need the 7th injector.

Now I jump on here and I see guys are now dumping the 7th injector and instead going with this AEM tuner. I do remember reading back then that @MTD was expressing his unhappiness not being able to tune his 4Runner the way he wanted to and was looking for another process.

I'm just trying to figure out what the heck should I do? My biggest goal is to hit Between 250-300hp @ the rear wheels on my 4Runner. I'm not looking for a race car...but I want to go when I mash the skinny pedal!!! I live in Ohio @900ft above sea level. We have flat to hilly terrain and we have 93 octane available to us.

So now I'm just majorly confussed?!? Question is: should I go purchase bigger injectors (what size ??) install my 2.2/2.1 pulley and then get and install this AEM tuner and tune my ECU? (Please note: I have no idea how to tune our 4Runners! I watched them use EFILIVE on my Duramax but that's it!) Or do I stick with my 7th injector Kit see if it works?

@MTD I hope you'll chime in as well as others and let me know what you think. I'm feeling like now...that the 7th injector doesn't work or at least doesn't work as well as we were lead to believe it would work??

Thanks for any and all suggestions! I know when it comes down to it...it will be my decision what I end up doing. But I'd really like to hear yalls opinions

Thanks again guys!!

The 7th injector works fine. It's just hard to tune and has less flexibility on what it can do.

An alternative is to use the AEM FIC with Supra injectors. There's some good threads on Yotatech if you search "Supra Injectors" or google it. They are plug and play as far as installation goes, you just need the ability to tune the engine or they run very rich.

I am thinking for myself (once I get the money again...) the AEM FIC, wiring harness, Supra injectors and 2.1 pulley. Down the road I might try a 2.0 pulley but still debating on that one. Meth injection is an alternative to the supra injectors and AEM FIC. A meth injection kit with a progressive controller will allow you to adjust flow for a very, very basic tune. You can run it without a FIC piggyback controller.

First off there is no chance of safely getting to 250-300 wheel with the urd 7th it doesn't have the capacity in the hardware or software to handle it. Most importantly what year is your 4runner? If it is 99 or newwer the 7th will not be an option because you can't tune closed loop without additional hardware.

I can tell you the biggest point of the AEM is the ability to live tune and how intuative the software is. You can't screw it up if you learn to tune it at stock boost with stock injectors lol. It is a very wonderful thing!

I am going meth injection early this summer mess around with that at a 2.1-2.0 pulley and if I need more I will be getting some 550cc injectors from this shop near Chicago. That will be interesting, because you will then need to scale your maps for vacuum as well as boost, but I know someone who has done it and the AEM handles it like a boss.

Anyway in short for you and your goals I would get the FIC and install it and get tuned with stock injectors and pulley. Just sell off the URD and you should have plenty for the FIC and some extra cash on top of that lol.

I wouldn't recommend the supra injectors as a first step at least. As a starting point, meth is my choice because then I don't have to fiddle with getting the vacuum sectors of my maps tuned correctly.

So where do you get the injectors from. Is there a shop like URD that specializes in this?

Can someone post a link to the AEM FIC where I can learn more about it and buy?

So, if I understand this correctly...you plug the AEM FIC into my ECU and then a cable would run from that to your laptop. Then the laptop would have AEM's software on it. From here is how you change the tune...correct?? My question is: how do you know what to change? And what all does the AEM allow you to change. Just fuel...or??

Sorry for all the very basic questions. Never done this or seen anyone do this. I just installed my S/C, but not my 7th injector. Trying to figure out the best route to go...if I can get my SC to run right that is?!?

Thanks

I have the name of a shop to get injectors from, I'll look it up and get back to ya, but like I said I wouldnt go that route until you have ur stock tune nailed down.

As for the link just go to AEMs web page, it won't be model specific info but it will tell you what it does.

The FIC is a piggy back similar to the URD system so it doesn't just plug in you will have to wire it in. It will allow you to skew your fuel out put by a certain percentage, modify your o2 readings to keep ecu fuel trims in check, retard timing, and if for some reason you need to it can modify mass airflow voltage.

As far as tuning goes AEM released a bunch of really nice universal step by step videos to learn how to do that that I can post here.

Thanks for all the info...much appreciated!! Yes, I would diffinetly take your advice and start my tune all stock before I attempted to change the tune with bigger injectors. I was just hoping for a website to look at the injectors and check out pricing. That way I can get a real world price with everything include and see what this will need up costing.

Heck first I have to get the stock set up running right before I mess with tuning. I got my SC installed today...but it's not running correctly. It's smoking due to burning oil. For whatever reason the SC is causing a positive pressure and is forcing oil to be burned. Unsure if I have some vacuum lines wrong? Have you heard of this? Any ideas. Runs like junk...no power at all? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

How old is your PCV? If you haven't replaced that in a while I would likely start there. It could be as easy as replacing that or as bad as replacing valve seals or piston rings, but I'd start with the PCV.

That's a good question! I have no idea how old it is. That will be the first thing a change. I'll stop by the parts store on the way over. Thanks you :biggrin2:

For injectors, I use RC Engineering injectors.

Thank you for your source. I'll look them up and get some prices. Have a swell day Sir! :biggrin2:
