So yesterday I went out and picked up a $400 pink milkshake, I just wanted the motor.

but I was like what the heck... it still drives actually really smooth and so I figured since the transmission is already focked lets see how far I can drive it before it ded.

I had a spare radiator that was almost new so I slapped it in... filled up with some high quality O'Reilly coolant.

drained the transmission and blew out the send and return lines. got 1.5 gallons of goop out of it. then put a gallon of high test O'Reilly ATF into it.

Fire it up and hop out to see if anything is leaking. nope we are good so far.

GOD DAM thing locked me out!:lock1:

so there I am with this ticking time-bomb running and I have only 1 key. after 30 seconds of OMG, OMG, OMG ... I unhooked the battery and pulled the MAF so it died.

any tricks for getting back into this rust bucket? I could break a window but... I'm not experienced at grand theft.

please advise?

Where's the nearest Toyota dealership? Take your bill of sale and any records with the VIN on it, and get a key made for like 20 bucks.
 
This literally happened to me one time as well.
I got home and realized that I forgot my garage door opener, so I had no way inside my house. So I figured I'd go kill some time and wait for my wife to get home.
So I got back to the truck and start it up and I was going to check something underneath since i had the time, so I started it up and closed the door without thinking twice. I have no idea why but it locked itself.
So there I am, locked out of my house, locked out of my car, my phone is in the car. So I walk down to the corner store and borrow their phone. Luckily I had Emergency Roadside with my Insurance which also does lock smithing.
Not even 10 minutes later and they were there to rescue me with one of those inflatable bags and a long grabber to pull up on the lock.
 
Did this while working on mine before the motor was back in. Used a hooked coat hanger through the weather stripping to pop the lock
 
Ghetto, yes, but tested...

Coat hanger or equivalent, pull the drivers door at the top right corner, and start fishing for the door lock button. A second person helps.

Or AAA membership.
 
Coat hanger. Seen NYC pros break almost any car in five or less using one.

Always roll down the window when one only has one key. Reminds me of the med school student I dated who had five keys to her Accord, but all on the same key ring.

Stop touching Toyotas for the rest of the year.

OK!

here is what I did and I should have taken pictures. I grabbed a couple of shims, you know the kind when you install windows and doors. pulled the driver side door top as hard as I could and then got 3 wedges into that opening. then used a long flat ruler to slide down and push the unlock button. worked like a charm. only took like 5 mins.

2 people could get into one of these things in like 15 seconds with a little practice.

Hey man... the DT heads were a huge PIA to put in but I really like them. Gives things a nice extra pop.

This is how AAA got into my car when I locked my keys in it. he had some sort of pump though which was pretty cool.. he wedged it in, pumped it up to spread the door and then use this same plastic tape thing to grab the lock...

Just another reason not to keep valuables in your rig and have a transponder key!

just so it's said, I understand the transmission is done. in reality this is just for fun to see how far it will go.

the guy I got the truck from and I believe what he told me. truck overheated, he stopped and had it towed home. he told me the head gasket was bad because there was coolant in the oil. he had no idea. no coolant in oil that I can see. just a classic milk shake.

when I tried to take the passenger side radiator ATF coolant line off it just fell off so... that radiator gave it's all but.. 20 years is 20 years.

I did 3 drain and fills yesterday.

1 gallon at a time.

the fluid looks pretty foamy still but it flows and resembles ATF now. truck drives just fine, no skips, no stutter, no clunks. I drained and filled the coolant 1 time. it looks pretty good but probably needs one more flush to get the gunk out. honestly you would never know this truck had trouble now. when driving the ECT shows 199 and holds just fine.

I went 33 miles with it yesterday, nothing far from home and had my phone just in case.

I will update the thread and we will see how far it goes.

truck is running on rusty steel spare, the tires are almost bald, no sway bars... they are rusted gone. rocker panels are only 50% there. the frame is pretty solid, no holes and wacking on it with a hammer has a nice solid sound so... that is still ok. body has tons of rust on it. it's not long for this world. 4WD works just fine.

Trans started slipping, stuttering so I pulled it out and found one out of a 98 I will swap in this next week.

220064 miles in total I went another 112 miles.

I was thinking about trying to drain it again and see what would happen but there was some long slivers of metal in the pan and a ton of very fine metal dust. no big chunks so I think a hard part must have started to fail.

total time to get that mudder fockers out of there was 10 hours. these rust bucket trucks are not fun to wrench on.

Just pulled the trans out of a 2000 limited I just bought and what a pain in the ass that job was. It’s a 10 hour minimum job, Hoping to never have to do that again haha. I was surprised that your trans lasted as long as it did!

this is the 2nd one I have pulled so I kind of have some tricks now. tomorrow with another guy I'm pulling my 3rd one. I'm hoping having a helper makes it go a lot faster.

I think it's just everything you have to remove is not easy.

once the transfer case is off getting the starter bolts and trans to bell bolts are really easy. on 20 year old rust buckets like this one every nut/bolt is a battle.
