I've been driving my '13 SR5 for 9 months now; keeping my eyes peeled for some of the fabulous 5th gens that are shown on this forum.

So far this forum seems to be a very special place. I spend almost all of my time in the north-west quadrant of Nevada and over the hill into the north east corner of California.

About 80% of the spotted fifth gens are SR5s - ALL OF THEM stock except for tires.
The other 20% are Limiteds - ALL OF THEM stock - even the tires.

I have not seen a single Trail model. I have not seen a single TRD model.

And everything seems to be white or grey - - -

All of the built 4Runners in the area are 1st, 2nd and 3rd gens. Most of them are real beaters........

I'm beginning to think that this site must be being paid for by all of the aftermarket parts providers whose ads pop up all over the place.........

Seems as if they have created a good business model. Comments welcomed.

You're probably not going to the right places. Like the mountains. You'll probably find a lot more trail editions where you have more trails that warrant things like locking diffs, etc.

You apparently don't go to the mall very much. There's a difference between exploring, which we do, and going up a trail just to see if the vehicle will make it, or building a vehicle for looks.

Well, you are in Fernley which has like 19k people lol. I suspect you could see some in the Reno/Tahoe area. There are quite a few down here in Vegas but most 4runners are mall crawlers around these parts as well. I suspect to see more and more as people switch over from FJ's.

Here's a TE in it's natural mall environment with a sweet first gen I saw, in Reno no less! I live and work in the south end of town I see probably 80% SR5's, 10% Trails and 10% Limiteds. Pretty much every time I see a TE it's on Mt. Rose Highway going to/from Tahoe. My coworker got black TRDP after he was inspired my 5th gen.

Lots of 4Runners in the DFW area. Very few of them are modded though. Mostly what you see modded around here are Brodozers and Jeeps.

We don't have any mountains, but we have a ton of malls that are full of lifted Jeeps.

Yes - Utah probably does have more mountains - it's higher average elevation and has taller peaks. It's hard to clearly define what metric to use for "more mountains". I'm from Montana and it certainly has a lot more mountains than either Utah or Nevada, but its also much larger. More importantly Utah people spend a lot more time in the mountains.

Not to mention I'm 4hrs from Moab, Yellowstone, and Teton national parks.

lots around here, I would even venture to say that I see a lot more limited's, then sr5's, and then trails. by far the most often modded are sr5's, then trail's, have let to see anything other than a stock limited though.

Most never go offload and most are owned by California transplants who somehow thought you needed a Jeep in Texas. The second most poplar vehicle in my area is a Ford Raptor. Tons of them. They also never go offroad. My neighbor has two, and one is completely modded out on 37s. I asked him if he wanted to go offloading with me sometime and he said "no way, I hear you get scratches doing that. I use my truck for hunting and don't want to mess it up" This things has full bumpers, winch.... This place is king of the poser. I guess people think they have to portray a lifestyle.

Mountains

For what it's worth, Nevada is the most mountainous state in the continental US. Second in the entire US behind only Alaska, based on peaks.

I was gonna say the exact same thing. Here in San Antonio I cant swing a dead cat without hitting a bro'd out 4 door JK on 37s. Many with light bars, bumpers, winches, rear racks for coolers, jerry cans, blah, blah, blah. Usually driven by some young dude or chick. This isn't Moab, so I can't figure out what the hell these people are doing with these vehicles. It's not like there's tons of offroading here. I guess they like driving an unreliable Chrysler/Fiat that gets 10 mpg and is loud as hell just for looks. At least I try to get to Moab or at least some trails a couple of times a year.

I realize I'm pretty far away from the O.P.. but here in the Richmond VA area I see a crap ton of 4runners. All generations but a lot of fifth gens. Only saw one fifth gen that was modded, had a roof top tent and all. You have to figure that this forum represents a small number of owners and on this forum there is a small number of "modded out" fifth gens. Plus there aren't a lot of people that are going to seriously modify or off road a vehicle they are still making payments on. Our fifth gen is the main family ride, but we do take it off road from time to time. That being said you are more likely to see ours at a mall then on a trail, and the one week a year we do a lot of beach driving while vacationing in the OBX.
