Maybe I don't know how to do the math. But on 18000 miles per year @ 18 MPG that's about 1000 gallons, so from $3 to $5 that's another $2000 a year.
However, if I go to a vehicle that gives me 27 MPG , that would be 667 gallons for 18000 miles and at $5 per gallon saves me $1666.67 over the 4Runner.
But what vehicle is going to give me the performance and safety of the 4Runner and gets 27MPG?
Moreover when considering the reliability of the 4Runner, the difference is very probably not nearly that much.
Getting a second car, to save miles, heck the additional insurance will eat into the difference in fuel costs plenty.
I'd probably just slow it down a bit and do a little more of my own maintenance and keep my 4Runner even longer to avoid the depreciation costs of another purchase. Which brings up the excellent resale of the 4Runner. Damned near any other vehicle and you'll lose more on depreciation by comparison.
I don't know but as I see it, the 4Runner even at $5/Gallon gas is still a great value.
