Hi Everyone!

Introduction and question (adding sound insulation to quiet down the brake pedal “hissing” sound)

I am now a proud owner of 2013 Silver Trail with KDSS; just purchased it couple of weeks ago;:bounce:

As you can see from my signature I am not new to 4Runner world (LOL);
It was along journey for me (a lot of soul searching) to get the 5th generation I want… since 2014 facelift I was trying to force myself to like the new front end but on the end… deep down I knew I will never be happy with it… not trying to offend anyone who has 2014+ models we all have different taste (and it is still 4Runner) so it is all good!
Another reason I like the older 5th gen trail is purely from practical stand point: I am not beating my truck off road, but I am using it, and having black plastic on the front\rear bumpers and fenders is a lot more practical when you are off-road (reminds me my 3rd gen model)… and I believe the approach angle is slightly better on the older trail; also all trails before 2014 came with sliding tray, which I wanted since it allows me to sleep in the truck with flat floor;

As a side note: for everyone who is on the fence about KDSS;
IMHO: It is worth it, (note: originally did not want it because of possible issue down the road and complexity for a lift); But I came to this final conclusion after driving 2016 trail without KDSS-I drove it for a week as a loner car… I would be scared letting my wife drive it, yes, it was that top heavy and road manners would be downgrade from 4th gen I had; bottom line (again IMHO) KDSS is awesome!:clap2:

Now for the question part: did anyone have success by adding some sort of sound insulating material to make brake pedal “hissing” sound less pronounced? If yes, please share.

Ok.... then I have to ask another question: anyone has the idea of the actual source of the noise (accumulator, lines, valve (s)) and if that source is outside of the firewall or inside (next to the brake pedal)?

From what I've read here, that sound is due to the brake assist feature.

No...

I am talking about squishy sound when brake pedal is depressed, here is one of many threads about this: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/171234-squishy-brake-pedal.html

Unfortunately “consensus” is that it is normal… in some 4Runners that noise is not as audible as in others (my 4th gen made that noise, but it was very hard to pick it up… it was very very faint sound);

So I am just trying to see what can be done to possibly insulate the source of that noise…

I'm still glad the stupid brake noise is the biggest concern of people on this forum.

I'm used to the Jeep forum with deep discussions about water leaks, bad heads, oil burning motors, noisy throw out bearings and bent axles.

I come over here where the some meaningless, faint hiss that is obscured by any road noise at all or the radio is source of so much drama.:ranger:

The sound you hear is the flow through a tuned orifice. I suppose you could insulate it a bit but you will need to build a complete insulated cover that encloses the bottom of the dash back to the firewall. Basically that area where the arms of the brake and accelerator pedal are. There are dozens of threads out there that ask the exact same questions. In a few of those threads are my explanation of the brake system operation and the squish noise. FWIW the 14 up models are nowhere near as bad as the 10-13 models as far as noise. What did they change? No clue. As a matter of fact it could be they use the same part number but with a revision so unless you ordered $$$$$ worth of brake components to fit the 16 model you won't know what parts they modified from Toyota.

This sound and the squishy feel bothered me for the first few months. I don't even notice it now.

I am still not all that fond of the way it reacts to what it considered a panic stop. But at least I am used to it now and know what to expect.

Still the best vehicle I have ever owned out of nearly 40, hands down.

The only one I wish I still had was the 72 Chevelle SS I wrecked when I was 19. Bought it from the same guy that owned the Dazed and Confused one.

My 2013 SR5 has NONE of the problems most of you speak of:

Brake noise
Brake dive
Un-level-ness
Top heaviness
spring sag
weak lights
etcetera

Maybe it's because I kept it stock and put on noisy tires - - -
