Is it just me or do Limiteds (and Nightshades) have some sort of stigma about them?

It’s as if there’s MORE excitement over an SR5, as a “true 4Runner” than a Limited. It’s got to be that front bumper that’s killing it.

Just my 2¢, between the front bumper, full time 4wd, 20 inch wheels, and styling notes, the Limited and Nightshade trim levels seem to be geared more towards the soccer mom types, whereas it seems a good portion of the people that buy 4runners want a more off-road capable rig.

I believe all 4Runners are more then capable of off-roading equally to an extent. But the low hanging limited bumpers give it less clearance. Most find the limited bumpers just plain ugly as I do.

I have a limited and I planned on changing the bumpers long before I even purchased one. Here’s my 16 Limited.

In the last five years, I've went from a 2017 Chevrolet SS, to a 2019 TRD Pro 4Runner, to a 2020 Genesis G70 3.3t, to a 2022 Toyota 4Runner Limited(should be in within the month).

I have zero desire to "off-road," especially considering I live in central Ohio...and if I did, a 4Runner wouldn't be my choice of vehicle.

What I did want was a bulletproof, non third row seat, non hybrid, no crazy tech crap SUV that holds a good resale value. Hopefully the Classic Silver Metallic paint help to hide all the chrome on the front. If not, I'll investigate replacing it with TRD Sport pieces.

To each their own though, I love you all!

And yes, that's a Vespa in the background. Gas is expensive!!! That's my 2 miles each way daily commute vehicle, unless it's raining or snowing.

It’s a vehicle that makes even less sense in 2022 than the other flavors of the 5th Gen. A street oriented SUV that has an inefficient power plant, cheap interior, handling dynamics of a city bus, no technology and most importantly it’s a horrible starting point for the off-road cosplay that seems to be so popular with 4Runner owners these days. Not surprising to me

Its over priced for what it is besides the bumper, full time 4wd and 20 inch wheels that off roaders prefer not to have.

Its just a "high end" over priced model for those who can/want to spend more.

I couldn't stand the 20" rims on my 2012 limited so I got rid of them. the earlier limited models (2010 - 2013) don't have the obtrusive front fascia and look very similar on the exterior to the SR5

it really depends on personal preference. dual zone climate is nice, going from slippery snowy back roads to paved roads and back is nice to have the AWD mode. third row seats are nice for the occasional extra passengers or kids.

unless you have an ORP or TRD PRO with rear lockers and MTS, the limited trim models with proper tires and a less obtrusive fascia will be able to do 95%+ of the terrain those two trims can do, and I'd bet more if you have a skilled driver. ATRAC is actually quite good when used properly

Here’s my take.

My first car was a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it had the NV249 transfer case (AWD - N - 4LO). It was rare for that option to be combined with the 4.0 I6, as they typically came with a NV242 also known as SelecTrac (2WD - 4PT - 4FT - N - 4LO). Yeah it gave you more options but it was a “lower” or “standard” option associated with Wranglers instead of more expensive Grand Cherokees.

Also Range Rovers, which I’ve owned as well, they are also capable off road vehicles don’t have 2WD as an option in any drive mode. You can select high and low range, and terrain programs in the newer models.

I’ve never seen anyone ask for 2WD or wish they had 2WD in either of these models. In my mind it leaves one possibility. The owners want to make a spectacle of themselves actually announcing the need to put it in 4 wheel and pull the lever. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] it’s like the truckers who want to drive with three sticks because a 13 speed ain’t enough!

If I got a Pro, the first thing I’d want is to do an AWD conversion, get real leather seats from a limited, dual zone climate swap, all of which is very labor intensive and impractical. Instead I just bought my limited… if I WANTED to look like a Pro, it’s only a roof rack, grille, and lift. First two parts are a couple hundred $$$ each and the lift would get rid of X-REAS.

I have a 2010 Limited and apart from all the chrome (which I hate and have covered up), I do like it. I do limited (no pun intended) offroading while camping and hunting, mostly on fire service roads and sometimes stuff a bit harsher, and it does exactly what I need it to do and performs decently.

I choose it specifically over the other trim levels due to the Leather, NAV, Dual Climate, and other things that were harder to find all together on the same model outside of getting a Limited, as I was looking for a replacement for my 2008 Range Rover Sport and wanted something with similar interior creature comforts. I was honestly surprised to find that getting all those options together without having to choose a Limited was quite hard to find.

I personally do not care for the face-lift front fascia of the 2014+ models but it is still better than the 2014+ Limited front end with all those giant chrome pieces. I like the more rugged look of the 2010-2013 models minus the god-awful headlights and taillights. I'm saving for some Alpharex Novas and swapped out my tails for the 2014+ versions.

For someone like me, who will use their T4R for 90% highway driving and weekend getaways for camping, kayaking, and hunting, a Limited gives me all the comforts I want on a daily driver while still being capable offroad (looks aside). Though I do have a 3.5" Lift, 275/70/17's, and a few other mods to help it along the way.

Based on forum traffic, I'd agree with this assessment (although I like the Limited just fine). But to validate, has anyone seen Toyota publish sales based on a model's trim level? Imagine any recent figures could be skewed a bit by supply chain logistics as many manufacturers are allocating shared components to higher ASP products.

For me, it's an odd vehicle. Not bad, just a little hard to understand the marketing team's choices for it. It's street oriented based on the small tires and 20" wheels and the low hanging plastics. But the chassis isn't really the ideal choice for that target use when you have a highlander in the stable that is almost universally better for highway duty. And it doesn't come with some of the things that I think would make it a lot more compelling. KDSS and a V8/Turbo6. If it had the 4.6 v8 and KDSS no one would think twice about it justifying the price or its fit in the lineup.

If my wife were buying a 4R, it's the one she'd go for. And I think it would serve very well as an all around SUV. When I was shopping for mine, if it had KDSS I likely would have gone for the Limited for the nicer interior and then cut up the plastics as needed. KDSS is the biggest odd choice to me, yeah it adds a few inches of articulation - but it's biggest benefit is on the highway. Seems like a natural fit for the Limited trim.

I think I recall someone having either a quote from Toyota or some data at one point a few years ago. It was roughly 1/3 of sales being limited model. More than I had expected. Just not a well represented group on this forum.

For me, this lack of excitement about the Limited is great news. I was able to actually source a Limited a few weeks ago and buy it without a markup. Just want to say “thank you” for depressing the enthusiasm around the Limited

These are all great trucks. I owned a 2015 TEP/KDSS. That was great too. Living in the NW the AWD/full-time setup on the Limited was the factor that tipped me.

Again, “thank you” for continuing to suppress enthusiasm for the Limited. Have fun having to shift into 4wd to get out of a wet grass field.

Competition? Old school, simple, n/a, rock solid reliable, comfortable, spacious/box, zero pretense. I LOVE we still have hydraulic steering. I’m weird. I don’t want turbos, or start/stop, or hybrid/assist. LMK what’s out there. For me it was this or a GWagen.

I REALLY want to see how this new-for-2022 TRD Sport model does.

I had high hopes they’d give it 22” wheels so I’d have something legitimately Toyota to swap onto my Nightshade, but none such luck. 20’s.
