J-money build thread

Well my new diff comes open, SO a new carrier. When i set my aussie up it was TIGHT. actually .001 to .002 out of spec on the tight side of things. WHen i first finished your supposed to do the Unlock test. Mine wouldnt unlock. After some driving in 4wd it would then pass the unlock test, but it was hard to do so.

THat was my main reason for ordering an open diff. I get the chance that the new carrier is within spec and my aussie may open up some. I think its breaking cvs because its almost spooled. THe dam thing will not unlock with any power at all and 99% of the time in neutral on the trails i can tell the front still wont unlock. I think those tolerances are important. THe tolerance was the gap between the halves of the locker that move together when unlocking. So with it being too close, even .001 too close it may be having issues unlocking

Yeaah buddy. These mtr's run true to size. way bigger than these km2 285's. I have some cutting to do. THe front diff will be here mid next week. got the rear gears ill probably install that stuff on the weekend. then drop the front, put the aussie locker in the new front and slap it in in the middle of the following week. then time for some tubbing :) and chopping.

Threw the old sway bar back on the front to hopefully help these new tires wear evenly. my km2s wore out on the inside/outside and i think its from all the body roll in the corners

Dude im 50/50 on putting the front locker in the new diff... What do you think? I can keep it and put it in later if i wanted. I just am tired of snapping cv joints and these monster tires just look like cv joints worst nightmare.

Maybe ill put it in... :)

You'll love the MTR’s! They do run true to size, when I got mine I was a little nervous but you can make them fit. They hook up great in the rocks and deep snow (especially in the 8psi or lower range), yet they still ride good on the street and do well on snow packed/icy roads. They have issues keeping balanced but since it’s not your DD you’ll be fine, I have noticed that they act like a bias ply and flat spot if it’s cold or if they set for a while (it goes away after they heat up and get a couple miles on them).

This is just my opinion, but I would leave the front locker out until you can afford an ARB. I could get into specifics, but you have been wheeling long enough to know the whole story (Open = Shock load - vs - Locked = Binding). I think the 35” MTR’s are going to be too much for a full time locker, with the ARB you can pick and choose your CV breaking method. ;):

Dirtco, Exactly my dilemma, I know that i need the front locker on alot of trails. I use to have to winch spots and not i just roll straight through. I this time around ill split the new case up front and put the aussie in there and see if the tolerances are within spec. If they are ill try it. if no ill throw the spiders back in. ANd if i keep breaking cvs witht the 35's ill just take it out down the road. My buddy runs a full time locker up front and 35's and has had great luck, but then again its in a tacoma and im sure his is 1/2 the weight of my **** 4runner.

as far as the height of these tires they are almost exactly 35" i would say 34 7/8" THey are as close to 35 as you can get. 315's vary on height . some are 34 1/4"

That sounds like a good plan. Like you said you can always take it back out if you have issues, and you have changed your fair share of CV's so it's not the end of the world if you break one or two.

Well Got the gearing junk all done. The rear diff I set up and ended up looking great. Perfect pattern, good pinion preload with the solid pinion spacer, .008 BS.

Got the locker out of the front and in the new front and got that in the truck.

Got the tires mounted and the rear tires on.

TOMORROW IS CLEARING TIME :) Its supposed to rain/snow and school is over. Im having one issue and that is my tires hit the UCA at full droop. Its on jackstands so I cannot get the tires on since they are hitting. Im thinking about grinding down the outside edge of the UCA and filling any hole i create with some 3/16" plate. Similar to sonoran steels old shaved uca, but not as severe of a hack job. I really only need 1/4" off so actually ill cut just under 1/2" off the outside rim, that way the 3/16" plate i add should be just enough not to rub at all. I have wheels with a thick mounting surface and 3.75" bs. the thick mounting surface is the reason i dont just go buy the 1/4 spacers.

And i have a few extra UCA's laying around if i ruin one.

From what animal are those antlers from?

I now see why you are so adroit at changing out CVs.

Thats a deer rack. there are about 20 of them in the garage. Years of family hunting :)

Clearancing is going as expected. Had to trim the a arms significantly. got one side done. On to the next. This thing is going to be rolling tonight. PICS WILL COME

Got most of the work done!!!

315/75r16 good year Mtr's are on. 5.29s are in and its all good.

I have had to do so much work. I have more pics on my phone from all the work, The front diff came from ECGS with an open carrier. I pulled my diff, split the case took the locker out. put my locker in the front diff and put it in the truck on friday. Then on Saturday i set up the rear diff with 5.29's, all new bearings and a solid pinion spacer. That took pretty much all day. The set up looked great and works fine. I got the pinion depth on the first try. I have put about 120 miles on the gears and they are fine (the front gears move because of the locker). 5.29s and the 5spd are perfect for around town and the little i have had it in 4 low seems great. On the freeway they are a little low and i keep the speed around 65 to keep the rpms right about 2800. Anyways on sunday i put the rear third in. filled everything up with oil. got the tires mounted did a few other things. Monday i trimmed and cleaanced the front. WHAT A PITA> i decided against tubbing since i was irritated and exhausted so i used the BFH and made room. Had to trim a tad off off the uca... I have spares if this causes an issue but i welded some plate on em and they should be fine. Today i added longer wheel studs and 1/4" wheel spacers up front and eliminated any rubbing issues on the uca up front.

TOOO MUCH WORK Tomorrow ill get some pics and i am going to trim the rear bumper and finish the job up.

and here is a pic showing the rear fit while flexing
Stuffed, not fully on bumps. I only have to trim just a little bit off the rear bumper. Im so glad these tires fit in the wheel wells

THESE MTRS ARE BIG. they are 35" with the weight of the truck on them and they are about 12.5" wide on my wheels. they are true to size and have cause some major headaches, but when i went out to flex the rear i went up some stuff i couldnt with 33's and did it idling. SO STOKED RIGHT NOW!!!

Couple more

nice dude, i didnt do **** to the truck i've been buried in finals week, but after that im gonna clean up the belly pan skid and weld on some half tubings to the rear links, also adding a skid to the link mount and the shock mount(maybe i should move the lower shock mount on top of the axle? ), beef up the panhard drop and use a BFH to bend my gas tank skid back in it place after being pulled out by the drive shaft.

I was in finals week too during this. Buried. But i go my grades today as well. All a's and b's. I still have yet to get a C in a class in my entire life :D PUMPED. Finished my last Calculus class and got a B+ in physics.

Hey brian you know ALWAYS SMOOOOOOTH! Dont tempt me to change my classic username to a more respectable one LMAO!!!!

You should post a side shot on level ground so we can see just how big those bad boys really are! Glad you're stoked on the 5.29s! I got your text that you drove up Cajon Pass in 5th, that's great! I have to turn my O/D off and climb it in 3rd with the auto.

That looks good. How high is the 4runner riding now?

Congrats on the grades as well. Physics in high school almost killed me, even though the teacher was one of the best I had.

Thanks, physics sucks...! Got kinematics done but I still have two more quarters of physics( electrical and thermo/hydro dynamics ). Some of that stuff is just so complex. So glad to finish math as well .

And my truck rides about the same now. The wide tires seem to make It a little more stable.
