J-money build thread

Okay so I'm thinking my lock right issue may be oil related. Tomorrow morning I'll drain the 85-140w out and put regular 80-90 in. The thick glue oil may be causing the slipping and problems

would you do an Aussie if you did it over again? or would you go with the Lockright again?

aussie all the way. it replaces all the gears in the stock carrier. the LR re uses your worn side gears. They are about the same price. Honestly if i regear and buy a diff built i think i will just get a spool. But then again i don not drive my truck all that much. Im hoping the oil change in the morning will help

Spool it!? That'll be fun coming up the mountain! I'm hopeful for you that your oil change will make the LR work, but I dunno, I'm not holding my breath. Did you keep your old spider gears? I think I have mine still if you need some to get by. Micheal's LR got chewed up in his Jeep, but that was because he was unknowingly running 2 different diff ratios. But still, it showed how weak the LR's are. Those big flat teeth were all rounded off.

Are spools not a good choice for the T4R? I was thinking of going this route as nothing to break once I get everything set up.

no they are just strong and really inexpensive. They are only good if you dont really drive the vehicle around.

And Brian. My LR re used the stock side gears. They are the two somewhat cone shaped gears with the axle splines in them. I really think the super thick oil is just keeping it from working right. And im debating the spool. I can get one cheap and my friend said he will help me set it up. He just replaced a welded rear end with a spool on his 4runner

Yeah, I just wondered if you need any of the stock spiders that the LR does replace (Im guessing it would be the lateral spider gears) just so you can drive it until you get a new locker/spool. I think spooling it would be a bad idea since you don't trailer the truck. It's would be ok if all you did was desert wheeling, but coming up the mountain to wheel Dish or Bull will suck. I have a buddy who has a spool in his Chevy and it's horrible to drive even a few miles up here. It sits in his driveway a lot more than it used to because it's lame to drive.

ahh all my local wheeling buddies run spools or welded diffs and they just deal with it. iv been to john bull with a guy running a spool and the trick is to over inflate you tires in the rear so they slip easier... but non of that really matters since the Oil Change i just did on the rear diff fixed the lock right issues. It locks up great now. No more slipping, and if i turn it chirps the tires like it should. a Night and day difference between the 140w and 90w on how it works.

I was sure the side gears were toast, but i guess the thick gooey oil makes it malfunction. It works on these little springs and my guess is that the thicker oil make too much resistance on the springs

Well my Hard drive on my computer broke a few weeks ago. I lost all of my stuff because I dont have a back-up. Anyways i was looking on photobucket and found some cool wheeling pics from this last year.

Generally I dont take pictures when I go wheeling, but on a few trips someone had a camera.
here are my favs.

Thanks. That red sas second gen is top heavy. It would have flipped, but the slider stopped him. I have some good wheeling coming up this weekend, maybe I'll come home with a new dent or two :)

Front locker is ordered. I cant wait till it shows up and I install it. I have just got to the point where the Front Locker is a must. Wheeling every week and trips to the rubicon and moab this summer it will get its use.

I had to winch On John Bull yesterday, and that was the breaking point for me. I was irritated

Same spot as last time?

Yep. John made it fine with the front locked. I tried to bump it, but that didnt work... Its time for the front locker. Iv been wanting to wheel some of the easier hammer trails too, and just the rear locker isnt going to cut it.

Scuba ran the left side and broke the entire side off his rear bumper. Im sure pics will show up on TTORA.

Well, I got the front locker in yesterday. So far so good. I have a few pics of the install i will post up a little later. Im planning on wheeling somewhere tomorrow to try and test it out. It passed the lock/unlock test on jackstands, so apparently its working right, but I have an issue getting it to unlock while driving, maybe its acting just like it should. and in that case its fine. In 2wd its completely invisible while driving, not noises, no binding etc.

Note: Do not put a locker in the front of a 4runner if you plan on using the 4wd on the street. i pulled mine out of my driveway in 4wd on to my dirt road and it started binding when i turned on the driveway.

Front locker is working great. Went out wheeling today by myself... So i just ran Bullfrog. I dont have any pics from wheeling but i have a few from the install.

Front diff out. Took about an hour and a half. not too bad at all

Pic of the pinion gear. Funky housing

Locker in spider gears out :) Notice that the ring gear had to be removed for this install. No worries on re setting the backlash this diff has no adjusters like the v6 Its done with spacers

Ring gear back on and carrier back on the stub shaft

all in all it was a good install (I HOPE). Its alot of work, but wasnt too bad. Im proud :)

Sorry if i dissapoint anyone in saying this but....i will never ever ever take my 4Runner on any terrain like that! Mainly because its my daily driver hahaha. Dude nice build im jealous!

damn Jason i wish i had your skills! cougar buttes is gonna feel brand new now

thanks Troy. Yeah it was way different out there with the front locked.

Today: I ran Gold Mtn. and then john Bull. It was a great day, and a perfect test for the front locker. Its working great. No leaks, It ratchets around some corners. I think my buddy got some pics. There were a lot of people on the trails today. we ran into a few groups. These trails go by so fast with just two vehicles.

and the rock that got jammed between the frame and tire in Bullfrog ended up slightly BENDING MY LOWER LINK. its bowed slightly downwards. I didnt think a rock could bend 1.5" .250 wall dom that easily :) Its not a big deal to me Im just going to leave it. If I had to do it again I guess I would have to use 2" .250 wall dom or use the 1.5 .250 wall and sleeve it with some 1.75" .120 wall. I think 3/8ths wall dom would be almost unbendable.

And on another note my 4x innovations sliders have been great, but I should have bought the DOM ones. My sliders are getting all dented up. Better than the truck.
