JBL Sub Replacement

I am trying to install the kicker comp d in my 2006 4 runner. Do I have to use all the connections on the sub? Or do I just need to cut off the ends coming from the amp modify them and attach to the sub? female in training is overly frustrated because there isn't ANYTHING on the web to answer my question!!!

use all the factory wiring....yellow and green are negative, black and red are positive I believe. not sure about having 8 terminals on the sub....I used a dual voice coil Rockford sub and had only 4 terminals on sub

The pairs of terminals are probably just to make it easier if your going to run your voice coils in parallel. Your not so you only need to use one terminal per pair.

just know using factory amp wont be pushing that sub or any aftermarket sub that hard. Thats why i highly recommend running an aftermarket amp/wiring. It will still sound just fine but not nearly as good as it could because of lack of power.

Right, there should only be 2 sets of voice coils, you shouldn't have to use all 8 connections, just 4, 2 pos and 2 negative, which is what is coming out of those 2 stock connectors

The posts here are encouraging and helpful. My original JBL subwoofer had disintegrated and provided fuzzy, scratchy bass. So I swapped in the Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-8 P|3 Shallow Punch Dual Voice Coil subwoofer. I am still using the original OEM amplifier. The new Fosgate 8" subwoofer was shallower than the OEM JBL 8" subwoofer that it replaced, so no cutting or shaving inside of the black plastic subwoofer enclosure was necessary. I placed the new Fosgate speaker into the hole left by the old JBL speaker and then used self-tapping screws (from Home Depot) to screw the new Fosgate subwoofer onto the black plastic housing that previously held the the old JBL speaker. The installed results look exactly like the Fosgate P|3 subwoofer pictures posted here. It sounds great! I'm very happy with the sound and even more thrilled with the help and guidance offered from this thread.

First post ever --

I've never messed with car audio besides installing new head units, but I just purchased the Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-8 for replacement of the rear sub. Leaving the amp as is & installing in the same enclosure with new holes drilled. I must say, I'm hating toyota using this jbl crap they don't even make anymore right now. Gah!

From reading this forum (so helpful, thank you guys so much) this is not going to be a "plug and play" scenario correct? Does anyone know of any instructional information that will guide me in tackling this in the next few days?

Not exactly your plan but give you an idea, also has a link to instructions on removing everything to get access to the sub which is really the trickiest part.

Other than that, the factory sub is a DVC meaning there will be 4 wires to hook up. Depending on if your new sub is DVC or not it could get a little confusing, I'm not a guru but if you have anymore questions just ask...car audio is a pretty universal language tho so even googling just about anything should get you answers even if there not 4runner specific.

I'm in the same position as Nutty4rnr---plan on purchasing the Fosgate P3SD2, but leaving in the OEM amp. Glad to see someone post that they were able to do this---I was hesitant on that being able to work. Don't know what I'd do without this site lol.

Kicker Install good as new!

So did the Kicker Comp D install for my girlfriend who purchased an '06 with a blown jbl rear sub. The hardest part was finding a sub capable of playing without an additional amp. Much Thanks to the T4R.org and all the input!

After the install we are both happy with sound, however as mentioned the subs full potential has not been reached.. I may throw an amp to it soon but for now it sounds good. The Kicker comp D shines with Volume is more than half way up.

I had to used a grinder wheel to grind down the circle and sound square edges in the back of the factory enclosure so the sub would fit nice.

Used 1.25" self tapping screws drilling new holes all the way around.

I'd say overall success!:tea:

Loos good, nice job, I had to trim the insides too, but small price to pay

Do you remember the way you wired the new speaker with the stock wires? I'm sure you had to cut the factory speaker plug, but what color wire went to what post (+ or -) of the new speaker? I don't want to blow the factory amp. Please help me out with this information. - Thanks

I got this same woofer but at a loss on wiring it to stock wires. Just replacing woofer and nothing else. Please helpout:

You are going to have to snip the plugs off of the stock wires. Yellow from 1 of the plugs, and green from the other are your negatives, and the other 2 wires are your positives. I suggest crimping female spade connectors on the wires prior to connecting so that you have a good connection.

Yep, mine is an 06......same same.
