The factory window sticker/mpg figures are based on 87 octane. These vehicles were built to run 87 (compression ratio, etc). It has been suggested that anything above 87 won't yield any improvement in mpg or performance - just a lighter wallet.

Curious to hear your impression of the experience.

In the 9.5 years that I’ve owned my rig, I’ve had the opportunity to fill up with non ethanol a hand full of times. Whether it was 87, 89 or anything above. Regardless of it being a higher octane, I still yield better MPG’s due to the lack of ethanol content.

To further explain, I can only get about 220 miles max out of a tank using regular 87 octane with ethanol. I was able to drive more than 296 miles today and still have a bit more than a quarter of a tank left. So hopefully that will give you enough confidence to try it whenever the opportunity presents itself, whichever octane may be available.

I will say, it was expensive. Very expensive. However if I’m yielding better mileage and it’s “better” for my engine, then I’m willing to dish out the extra coin for it. Where I live there aren’t any non ethanol stations so I only have the opportunity to fill up with it once a year when we go out of town.

If they had 87 octane non ethanol, I definitely would have chosen that instead. But given that they only had the mid grade non ethanol offering, I opted for that instead of the 87 with ethanol. The first time I tried it (last year) I was uncertain and nervous about running a higher octane in fear that I may cause damage or some sort of weird effect on my truck. None of that proved to be true, so my worries were set aside rather quickly.

EDIT: 256 miles with a quarter tank left.

Oil change, 6 quarts of SuperTech full synthetic high mileage 5W-30 paired with a Fram XG3600 filter. The filter is definitely a tight fit, but I was interested in it's performance. We'll see how it does.

New wipers, some cheap and low profile Rain-X brand ones to replace the old Denso ones (on the hood)

For sure! And a 3.5 hour road trip, too. Lol. They did great. The Denso blades lasted 11 months, which I guess is good. I do believe Bosch icons are the best that money can buy. I've had them in the past and ran the same pair for at LEAST 3 years without any smearing. But money is tight so I figured these will have to do.

Any ideas as to what is causing this corrosion to develop on my positive battery terminal? I've encountered this before with my old battery and I concluded that it was due to my alternator going out. Since then, I've replaced the alternator and battery, and even installed those felt-like material battery terminal protectors. Does anyone have any input?

Probably the terminal. They mostly will oxidize unless you use a conductive grease. I perfer the copper band terminals versus a lead terminal.. they will oxidize as well unless coated with conductive grease.

Interesting. They're definitely grease-less, as you can see from the photos. So my plan of action will be to clean the terminals and posts and then apply a grease to them. The negative terminal has absolutely zero corrosion, and also no grease, so that's confuses me a bit.

2 potential causes

1. A leak
2. Resistance

Wet batteries will leak electrolyte or electrolyte vapor when wheeling, it's inevitable. This is likely the cause.

Excessive resistance can also promote corrosion.

Try smearing Vaseline on the battery terminals after cleaning off all the corrosion.

I just use conductive grease.. Not dielectric grease. Since petroleum jelly has good conductive properties.. it will work.. :-)
 
Those pads should neutralize any acids that leak out at the terminal, but they aren't perfect. I have started hitting all my battery terminals with a quick spray of Fluid Film for corrosion resistance...

I will take a photo of what I use that is for lead acid battery terminals if I remember...:)

I don't wanna overhype something that isn't a huge deal, but I would like to come up with a solution for it in order to prevent it from reoccurring. I upgraded my battery terminals to brass ones thinking that would solve the problem and it did for about a year. Now I just want to maintain it and keep them in good shape.

I'm gonna take a brush to it and clean it off the best I can. Then maybe apply some dielectric grease or Vaseline to it and go from there. Thanks everyone for the input and suggestions.

Purchased new rear shocks today from Toyota Parts Deal. Went with OEM Tokicos (48531-69417). Out the door and shipped was $120.25 which isn't bad at all. Very interested to see how these will ride compared to the old, worn out 5100's I'm currently running. Will provide further updates when they come in.
