Keaton's 1993 Toyota 4Runner

I really love a clean, stock second gen. I don't care what anyone says; this is the most iconic 4Runner. First gen has nothing on it.
 
Wow why didn't I do this sooner? The body is so much less jittery. I still need to test on the highway..

This better be the solution. The passenger side had some GHETTO mounting solutions. At some point some washers were stacked to keep the bolt coming through the body. That mount was TOAST.

Also replaced the O2 sensor Never has this engine ran so good before.
 
I can definitely see the thought behind the bushings/rotational mass.

Pinion can be an issue, but you are right in that the 80 coils are much higher, those guys may just not be so in tuned with vibrations like the rest of us, really don't know. Youll have to keep us in the loop as to how the bushings come out.

I hear you on the shoestring budget! Armour is a spendy add-on, especially for a mild wheeler/DD.

I need to get it out on the highway, but first I need to find all the little rattles in the cab now. Poly looooves to make sure my engine vibration reverberates in the cab haha. I really highly doubt its the pinion--I ran out of time this weekend to check. I'm hoping I get it figured out. I gained almost 1/2 an inch all the way around just putting the new bushings in lol.

EDIT: Put it on the highway, the shaking is now more of an angry vibration. Much better in my book. Now If I could get the body lines better on the passenger side, I'd be much more willing to throw a new coat of paint on this summer.

I agree on those mudflaps. What are they off of or where did you get them? I'd like the take the running boards off, but haven't found front mudflaps that look decent yet.

Those bad boys are OEM. I had to find someone taking them off their 4Runner so they aren't "perfect". I got it off a dude on the 4Runner mafia Facebook group.


Today, I added the lovely Frost king stuff to replace the junk foam between the sound deadening and the carpet. I learned that my passenger side HAS no sound deadening since they removed it when they grafted another 4Runner onto this one. The joys of owning a totaled truck lol.

I wish I took pictures, but it looked super cool. Now I'm waiting for warmer weather to do the whole cab and then the rear.

My tailgate frame has been bent from years of hauling things just a bit too long for the truck. Not to mention jumping, standing, etc on the tailgate has caused a gap between the trim and the tailgate making a ton of noise on the road. Basically a WOOOOSH plus the muffler. Terrible.

I got some automotive weather stripping from Home Depot and fixed it. Elegant? Not really. Fixed? Yes.
 
i like your dedication to getting your 4r sorted out, and doing it on a small budget. hope you get rewarded with long usage and many miles.

Thanks! I joined that FB group. I found a pricey set on ebay and after some inner conflict I bought them. :) I can't decide whether to kick myself over the paying that much, or congratulate myself on finding a set. :crutch:

Thanks! Its been in the family for 25 years. It is really rewarding to get it back to what it should be after being in service for 18 of those years.

Then it sat.

Then I got it and its been a faithful companion ever since :)
 
I think my next steps towards fixing the shaking is to look at trailing arms and bushings as well as the panhard bar. The more I feel it now with the new body bushings, it feels like a shimmy versus a shake. Whats nuts is you don't feel it in the steering, you feel it in your butt.

Way past the point of no return on this vehicle so it is getting fixed if it wants it or not.
 
Installed new poly panhard bushings to see if it would make a difference on the highway: no go. I'm literally running out of rubber to replace :/

I got a used Yakima rack system off eBay to see if it would fit with my factory rails. It fit perfectly, even the screws included threaded into the factory fasteners. I need a cargo carrier and a bike rack now.

You did say you had the rear drive shaft balanced? How are all of the joints? How about the pinion bearing did it feel smooth? I would also check pinion angle just to check it off the list? You also replaced the axle bearings?
I chased a vibration with my sons truck and I believe the smoking gun was a worn driveshaft flange. I could feel and actually see some movement between the flange and the ujoint cap.

I had a new driveshaft built and balanced (twice, actually). I haven't replaced any of the front U-joints but that shouldn't matter. Pinion felt smooth. Had to replace the seal there and we tightened by feel (can't remember why, something with the preload, not a rear end expert by far). I'm starting to think something like a flange but I've driven without the driveshaft in. The only thing about that though is that I'm pretty sure one of the front ujoints is going out, so it vibrates in 4WD already, so it would vibrate without the rear. There is just still a fair bit of stuff to check but I'm low on funds still. Flanges, and a whole rear track bar bushing kit are on the order list.

Hey Keaton just a thought here. I can’t remember if your still running ADD hubs up front, but if you are that front ujoint could be a source. Even with manual hubs the front bits are moving a little bit at speed, even more so with non manual hubs.

That Yakima rack looks good! And familiar!

I'm running ADD.

Would the front driveshaft still be spinning? I shouldn't think so? I've removed the hubs entirely separating the CVs from the wheels--no change. I'm going to try that again soon but tow the truck with everything in neutral.

Question on your rack: did you drill straight into the roof? I was able to reuse the factory rails AND slide "shims" fine. Screws threaded in fine too.

I've been pouring over everything that could be causing shaking and it feels like the rear is the cause for sure.

Look at the rear alignment. Something has gotta be wrong based off the toe in/out on either side.

Can anyone else upload their alignment sheets? I'd love to compare!
 
Hey I've been following your thread and good job. Have you looked at your rotors? I know it sounds dumb but when I got my runner mine shook just like yours. I took the front end apart and greased it just to make sure the front end didn't need new parts. It does to this day, like lower bj and tie rods and stuff. Then I decided to replaced my rotors and it drove perfect. Turns out my rotors were severely warped. Even though my front end need rebuilding it doesn't shake any longer. Probably not whats going on but that's my 2 cents

I replaced my rotors late last year (2016), now they are warped again. This weekend they are coming off to be turned, but it shook before that. Just about everything under the front end, aside from swaybar bushings/end-links, is new or replaced within the past two years. In addition, I do not feel the shaking strong in the steering either. You feel it in your butt :)
