Kurtis T4R Build Thread

I did notice a wobble in the steering from 35-50MPH-ish. According to the shop the wheels/tires spin fine. It's not an insane bias ply death wobble but it is enough to annoy me. Realistically, I have no experience with double beadlocks or Rockers driven on the road so I am not sure what to expect. If this is just as good as it gets then I'll deal with it and drive accordingly.

Different places have different balancing equipment. I had a similar experience until I had a different shop do the balance. Some of the "big box shops" (I used NTB out here) have the high dollar equipment. Their balancer spun the tire, then indicated with a laser line precisely where, and how much weight was required. Now perfectly smooth at highway speeds, with no wobble or motion in steering wheel. Something to consider anyway.

Truck looks awesome!

I used one of the branches of The Tire Factory. They said it spun fine on the machine after they balanced it. I still feel that the wobble shouldn't be there. I think I might give Dyna Beads a try. They have beads that can be inserted through the stem; hopefully I can get past the rubber insert. I have the holes lined up with the stems but if it doesn't work that means I have to disassemble the wheels to install them.

I was testing my ARB today and noticed the compressor was kicking on every 6 or 7 seconds with the ARB locked. I started looking for leaks the good ol' fashion way by using soapy water in a spray gun... Nothing. Not even a buble. So I stopped and listened. I could hear air leaking in the diff. I pulled the plug and sure as shit the air leak is inside the diff. I put a condom on the diff breather to verify that the noise air leak was inside the diff. The condom blew up and now I am pissed. Called ECGS and left a message. Probably won't hear back until Monday. Anyway I look at it a leaking ARB is not good news.

What you mean by kick on? Does it kick on for a while or just simply burps? Cus mine burps every 90 seconds or so and it does it regardless of the front locker being engaged. So, I always assumed it's just a leak in my compressor somewhere. I never thought of it as the diff leaking air. Have you tested to see if the compressor burps without the locker being engaged? You confirmed the leak in the diff for sure, but it kicking on that soon maybe there's also a leak in your connection for the actuator on the side of the compressor. Does the locker work at all?

It only kicks on or burps for a split second and it only does it while the locker is actually locked not just the solenoid engaged and waiting for the locker to engage. The locker does work and I have check all my fittings with soapy water. After I started the break procedure yesterday I tested the locker again and now the compressor kicks on every 10-11 seconds now. It is better but not like it should be. I should be able to turn on the compressor, hear it run, then turn off, turn on the front locker, hear the compressor again to pressurize, turn off again and the maybe once more when the locker actually engages. But I don't know wtf to think anymore.

What's with all the steps to engage it? When I use my front locker I just flip both compressor and front locker switches at the same time and flip them both down when I'm done.

Same procedure. I was just trying to explain the difference in action between the switch turning on and the locker physically locking. The diff won't lock until it's lined up just like the factory E-Locker.

Looks good! Want to head over to Liberty and try it out?? Thinkin of a run on the 20th, or the weekend after

I don't live on HWY 2 anymore. Liberty is a 4 hr drive 1 way. We all really need to get a meet going at some point. I've met more SoCal guys than PNW.

Man those tires and wheels look awesome on your 4Runner! :D

I can't wait to see what you think of them at some super low snow wheeling PSI, they also look like they have room for some custom grooving if they don't hook up as well as you would like.

Thanks man. I am just itching for some snow wheeling. There is snow around here somewhere but I just have to figure out how to get to it.

It's been a busy week and I am sure I must be in the top 10 customers at OTRATTW by now. I swapped all the switches on the left side of the steering column to match the rest.

All circuits off.

Only Fog Lights are on. Turning the bottom LED on. These switches are awesome.

I have been following you thread for a long time and never really liked your bumper, it always looked too big to me.
But holy shit does it look good with the 35's!!
I have to say your 4runner is now one of the better looking rigs I have ever seen and that bumper you built with the 35's is by far the coolest thing I have seen on a 3rd gen.
I am sure you already know that your truck looks good but thanks for sharing the pictures you obviously know what your doing with a welder keep up the good work!

Wow! Thanks man. Though I can't take all the credit for the bumper. My buddy is a magician with a welder. I just explained to him how I wanted it and he made it happen.

It's funny because I've always thought the bumper was awesome but was almost out of place. The roof rack bothered me too. I liked both but they just didn't seem to fit. Now that I've got wheels and tires on it, it just fits I guess.

So sweet! I am liking the Contura V's more and more every time I see them...I might just have to swap mine out.

Not much of an update: Since I cut the rear bumper to clear the tires I wasn't able to keep the mud flap/fender flare combination. I needed some sort of mud flap to keep the truck as street legal as possible and the local police out of my ass.

I always ended up ripping off my mud flaps when wheeling in my last truck. So I made a pair dis-connectable ones and solved my problems. Here is my rendition of Quick Disco Mud Flaps for the Runner.

I think the pictures can explain the rest.

I don't find it to be the most desirable look but it gets job done and I can easily remove them.

Yeah, I know the hidden hitch sucks and needs to go away but I don't want to pull it off until I get the rear bumper built.

I'm having issues with my Rockers balancing right now. I think I have it figured out and I don't think it is an issue with the tires or wheels. Apparently "all 4 tire spun on the machine just fine" but they still have a decent wobble to them. I think they balanced them as a lug centric wheel. I don't want to give the tires and wheels a bad reputation if the tech was just a bone head. I'll know more this evening and will post about it in my build thread.

I took my shit box to Les Schwab today and had them give a shot at balancing them. They found that all tires were out of balance. The most being 4.5OZ out. Looks like my theory was right. Took it for a test ride and it still wobbles at 35-40 MPH but not like it was before. I can cruise at 60-65 MPH pretty well. I am okay with the amount of wobble considering the tires and wheels are a bit on the heavy side at roughly 150 lbs each corner.

Glad you were able to get them closer to being balanced. I had the same issue's with the MTR's, I could zero them out on the balancer but they would still shake a little on the road. It's because they were out of round and one was egg shaped (that one had to be kept on the back). After a couple hundred miles it would just get worse. For a trail truck it was fine, but for a DD it got old and put extra wear on the front end components.

Your going to kill it snow wheeling! I can't wait to see those tires in action at 1.5 psi! Well worth a little shake on the road getting to the trail. At 150 lbs a corner, and the shape of those tires, I doubt they will ever be perfect. But, it's still a killer set up, and if I could have another set of dedicated snow wheeling wheels and tires it would be your combo (or possibly Irok's)! :D

I might still try to do a little swapping around but the wobble isn't unbearable any more. I don't think it will ever be perfect either. I found some snow the other day but it's a bit too far out of reach. Looks like I am going to have to wait until this winter.

Sick Build man! I love the fab work you've done. I've always been a fan of tube bumpers but your custom plate bumper looks great. It's so stuffed into the front end unlike most that look like duck bills! And the single piece skid is great.

I love the Pitbulls and you won't find a better tire.
