Leaking rear axle seal, did the shop mess up?

Looking through the abs sensor, the skid rotor is not in the center, and the inboard retainer is far away from where the seal is. I'm assuming they forgot to put the other retainer on the outboard side of the skid rotor. On the receipt I paid for 2 retainers.

Are my assumptions correct?

If it was done by Toyota, hopefully they didn't mess up. When I did my axle seals/ bearings I had a local shop reassemble my axles and they totally messed up. They didn't press the retainers to the correct place on the axle so I actually had an inch gap between one retainer and the axle seal. They wouldn't fix their work, so I ended up going to the stealership to have it done right. No leaking since then.

I don't know the geography of the assembly well enough to tell you if your assumptions are correct, but I can tell you that my local dealer, on this one repair job, is incompetent and I'm waiting for the bearing and/or seal to fail(again) so I can attempt to collect my refund.

You cant see the outboard retainer thru that hole. the picture you posted isnt the best. However, if the retainer is touching the abs ring, there is no way its in the seal. This thread might help you visualize it.

It appears that they were press happy and pressed the retainer on too far. I'd take it back and either get them to fix it, or get them to pay for another ABS ring and retainer. Most of the time, they get damaged or cut off when you have to move them. I've seen some get lucky by simply pressing on another retainer to end up in the seal, but that possibility is going to depend on if the tone ring is in the right spot. Is your ABS lamp on? If not, you may be able to butt another retainer up against the current one, provided it leaves enough room for the new one to properly ride in the seal.

It is possible to over-press these things as you're only supposed to go a certain distance and there's no lip or stop for some components when pressing. I know we've had that issue once or twice at the dealership when one of us forgets that small but important fact.

I can't seem to find how far you're supposed to press these on, can someone point me in the right direction?

IIRC, the last set I did measured 25.75" from the tip of the splined axle to the farthest point on the tone ring. The spacer then gets butted up against the tone ring. I was doing wheels bearings (seals weren't leaking), in this 4runner so I simply measured the old stuff and replicated that distance with the new stuff. I'll revisit in the am with the spec measurement.

Thanks, I'm pretty frustrated with this shop. They are saying the seal seals on the axle, not the retainer...

Is your abs light on? I don't care for the crappy ABS, it can be pretty nerve racking sometimes.

Nope pulled the abs fuse. No light but it could be a bad bulb because it was on for a while, I would just remove the bulb

This is what I have too. It looks like 122.2mm from hub face to the farthest point on the retainer. It's a hard measurement to get without a brake drum digital caliper set or similar measuring device.
