How do you get to the middle bulb in the gauge cluster? AFTER removing the screws that hold the board

I found it easiest to utilize the FPC connectors that are located above the black cylinder (pictured below). You will see two silver ribbon cables going into black terminals. Push down on one side of the terminal with a small screwdriver and gently pull up on the ribbon wire until they pull free. There are two of these, one larger than the other. Once free, and with the screws removed, you can hinge the board out of the way for access to the middle bulb. Reassembly is the inverse operation-- push the ribbon cable into the FPC connector and pull up on the half of the terminal to lock. Hope this helps.

Thank you for that. Impatience beat me and I got in there with some plyers, twisted it off and did the reverse to get in.

After install, yeah a few hot spots but much better overall then original bulbs. Once again, will reiterate that dimmers work. The most frustrating part is the polarity issue, which you really can't get around but well worth it.

Thank you for the write up, responses and pictures. I would recommend ordering 1 additional bulb just in case it comes defective. Fortunately all of mine worked.

I replaced 3 #24 dash bulbs with LEDs on my '99. 2 of the 3 light up but the one next to the fuel gauge doesn't work. It's not the bulb, its not the polarity of the bulb either. A few years ago while towing I had something behind the dash short and a little bit of smoke came from behind the dash. The fuel gauge went wonky for a while after that but its back to normal. Is it possible that the twist socket that holds the bulb is burnt out or is it more likely that the contact on the circuit board is the problem?

Does anyone know the part number for the twist socket? I can't find it.

I just broke down and stuck with the original bulbs. Plenty bright for this old guy. I also hate the idea of constantly chasing hotspots.

Me too!! according to [MENTION=57546]4-Ripcord[/MENTION] led chart (thanks for that!) you have to break the bulb to remove it and widen the socket. I got the bulb out, but can't get the #74 to fit and not sure what the orientation should be to make the contacts. If anybody has pics and experience with this, please post.

Power outlet ring? Are you talking about the cig lighter ring? The power outlets in my 99 don't have a lighted ring around them. The cig lighter ring takes a special bulb from the factory. I came to the conclusion it was just too much of a hassle to change it to an LED. In my 2000 I jammed a red #74 in there and it would flicker on and off whenever I hit a bump.

This is super sketchy, but I couldn't replace that bulb either. I was putting white LED's in my dash to brighten it up and get rid of that awful green. I realized that some bulbs just had a green plastic cap on them, so I busted out a blue sharpie and painted the bulb a few times, letting it dry in between. Put it back in and it's no longer a green or yellow light, but the same color as the rest of my white LED's and no one knows the difference but me (and now you lol). Worked great!

So, I replaced a bunch of the dash lights in my '00 SR5 with LED's tonight. I tested everything, found that the "R", "D" and "L" indicator lights on the dash would not come on. I took it back apart, flipped those three 180°, and put it all back together (all the way). Now, none of transmission (P/R/N/D/2/L) lights are working. The remainder of the dash lights work, just not the ones that indicate what gear the automatic transmission is in. The socket that the "D" light goes into did look like it had a bad contact. Any recommendations on where to find a replacement?


Anyone got any recommendations or an idea of what I might have goofed up on?

How coincidental! I was literally spending the evening putting my list together of all the LEDs I needed to buy. Just spent $90 (+tax and shipping) to buy all of them, plus extras.

Consulted three different threads, including yours [MENTION=84588]redstar[/MENTION] as I need the third brake light bulb number, which on your list was a #921.

Along the same lines as the dash LED's....does anybody know what size I need to replace the hazard light button light? I haven't opened it up yet, but I am assuming it is a small LED like the permanent ones on the auto climate control, but I don't know what size that is.

Wow, almost 2 years to the day I finally got around the repairing the hazard light. For the record, the hazard button unit is easily popped out from the rear and will take the same 3mm bulb you use for ECT/Rear Defrost and is way easier to put in than those ones.

I've seen quite a few pics on here where guys hazard light is burned out, not that you use it much, but i like to keep my cockpit pretty dim and it took some hand searching to find it the other day at 4 am on my way to work with some idiot stuck in a taurus trying to go up a snowmobile trail.

not that ya'll really care as you were talking about it months ago but I swapped an LED into the cig lighter. Had to break the factory bulb to get it out and after some thought i ended up cutting a good amount off a 74 to shorten it but still kept the contacts in place. dont have a pic but there is the idea... I couldve done it nicely with a dremmel or something but didnt know if it'd work so i literally crudely cut it with a wire cutter and what do ya know, it worked so i left it

I’m trying to change the lights in my climate control module on my 00 4runner but the lights aren’t working. Is there a certain way they should be put in? Am I supposed to align the bulbs a certain way? When are the bulbs supposed to turn on. (Serious question) The bulbs have been burned out since I bought the vehicle.

If you're using LED's they are polarity sensitive.
If the don't work try rotating it 180 degrees.

I have found either the sockets or bulbs are a bit finicky.
One of my LED bulbs keeps coming loose. I'm going to put some adhesive on it.

based on what you told me i decided to sharpie one side of the light so i know what direction i've already tried. I think i kept putting them in the wrong direction over and over :ybrick:

same here, drove me crazy at first but i quickly learned to test frequently while the dash was apart
