LED tails and 3rd brake light PICS***

Alright, they came today. First impressions: WOW! High quality.

I can't get the old ones out though.

I took out both screw, got the whole assembly out, removed the gromet thing, but I can't disconnect the harness.

Anyone wanna help?
 
I had to take off the long plastic strip on the rear end. I believe there were 5 screws on it. Anyways, once you have that off you can pull the snap paneling on the sides off and reach the connector.

Some good news and some bad news.

Firstly it was a ***** for me to reach the connector. My arms are really scratched up. I even uncliped a lot of the side panel and undid the long pannel that holds the carpet down.

Silver- Mine came with the new harness already connected, so to use the old one I would have had to cut wires, etc.

I only got one in today, because I had to go to work. Kind of a bummer, but I'm planning on installing the other one tomorrow morning. I think they look really good though.

Reaching the bolt that holds the ground is a pain too. I had a lot of trouble fitting a socket and wrench back there.

Anyway I'll probably have some pictures tomorrow, if it doesn't rain too hard.
 
if it helps you shouldnt need a wrench on the nut it is welded to the body because of the limited room and access. unless the weld broke then a wrench is needed to hold nut. but pulling that panel way back with out breaking it is key to the whole thing.
 
Hmm... I don't think I created enough force to break the weld, but did get the bolt off.

How did you attatch your ground?
 
i would hope that you didnt break the weld where as it is a small bolt. but i pulled up the 5 screws that hold down the back piece of carpet then CAREFULLY pulled back the plastic panels to gain access to the bolt. i intalled the led tails with the harness that they came with. no problems. just remove ground wire nut and unplug then plug new one in attach ground wire and bolt. reassemble.
 
I pretty much did the same thing. The bolt that held the ground for the tail lights has a few other grounds on it too. Maybe yours is different since you have a 2000.

For me it was harder to get to the right side. I think it is because of the cargo holder. The plug as made it a little more complicated.
 
all should have a couple of wire because they ground different things off of one spot. but that link that was just put by sloan should show you a really good idea of whats in there. my arms got a few scraps but well worth it. that bolt should come right off with a 10mm socket if i remember correctly. either a socket or a rachet wrench should work. i use a regular socket and rachet

Damn. How did I not think to use my 10mm socket. I'm sure I'm going to go tomorrow and it's going to be a piece of cake with that socket. Big thanks for that idea!
 
Well at first I tried like an adjustable wrench thing ( not sure of the name) and couldn't get it dialed in, so I went and got this socket that has a bunch of metal rods in it. It's like a universal socket and it worked pretty well. I was short on time, so trying my metric sockets didn't even enter my mind.
 
ya that bolt should just about remove itself with that 10mm. jk but it should make things alot easier. let me know how you make out.

...... yea..... so did mine, but i just, unplugged it and plugged in the old one......

reverse bulb, turn signal, and main break light.... unplug and put the old one on.................. took me all of 5 minutes

Ehh... Nothing I can do about it now I guess. I didn't think that the plug for the old brake light would fit the one for the LED pannel. That would have saved me a lot of time though. :)

I finally got the other one in today. I'm pretty excited. The bolts that hold the grounds are definitely 10mm, thanks blk.

NJB- You can just add LED bulbs if you want to keep your stock housing, but if you want to change the housing and bulbs you need to buy a new set. Most of us got ours off Ebay and they run about $170.
