My tacoma has a list of shit to do every 30k which is like plugs and diff oil and what not and then at 60k its tranny and transfer case and plugs and diff oil again. Wondering if this is the same for the 4runner. the maintenance guide basically just said check the auto fluid and change th oil and filter and lube the shaft all the time.. seems there should be a more solid guidelines of maintenance

What's not solid about that? You check stuff. You change the oil and filter every 10K. Air filter about every 30K (for me). The reason for variability is the application. If I lived in the desert and drove off road on dusty trails every day and did a bunch of water crossings I would change things faster (severe schedule) than I would driving 25K up the interstate every year. That's not hard to understand. Common sense.

Speaking of drive shafts... what type is grease is recommended?

this, and so much more, is covered in your Owner's Manual.

My used truck didn't come with one, you obviously don't want to be helpful but if you change your mind feel free to mail me yours.
then i take it your "plan" is to ask individual questions about every detailed spec on an online forum?

why not just download an Owner's Manual? Toyota Online Owners Manuals and Warranty

to start you off, here's the spec section: http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om/OM35A36U/pdf/sec_06-01.pdf

if you PM me your address i'll mail you that cold beverage you ordered too.

According to Toyota:

Spider Gears - Use Lithium based chasis grease, NLGI no.2

Slide Yoke - Use Molybdenum-disulfide lithium base chassis grease, NLGI No.2 (Moly is recommended because of its excellent impact resistance)

Most people, and dealers, just use one type. I know my dealer uses Moly on everything, which is actually bad for spider gears. There are pages upon pages of debates every and all Toyota forums on whether using 2 types is really necessary.

I just decided to follow toyota's recommendation and use both. I don't what to have to deal with the worn out drive shaft clunk down the road, and it isn't that big of a deal to just get 2 grease guns and 2 different greases.

This is what I use:

Spider Gears - AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Truck, Chassis and Equipment Grease, NLGI #2

Slide Yoke - AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease, NLGI #2

And after being tired of dealing with cheap grease guns that leak and stop working after a couple of uses, I ended up buying a pair of Lincoln 1134 grease guns, which have been great!

Perhaps a mod could update the maintenance sticky thread with the following information (Or similar) right under oil change:

Lubricate Propeller Shaft
Lubricate the propeller shaft spiders and
slide yokes with lithium-base chassis
grease and the double cardan joint with
molybdenum-disulfide lithium-base chassis
grease. Re-torque the bolts to 88 N·m (65ft·lbf)

ya but for my tacoma its every 30k regardless how u drive. the 4 runner maintenance book seemed very vague. plus to check those fluids u have to put a new crush washer on everytime and what not.
