Misc Mods

Got the 4runner a few months ago after a long search for a very well kept low mileage '99 or '00 Highlander/Sport package, and have been slowly assembling some small mods. I'm a fan of the subtle things, so nothing here is too terribly exciting, but thought I'd post some pics up anyway.

First off, here is what it looked like when I bought it:

And here are some photos of stuff done to date:

  • Tinted front windows (20%) and windshield (35%)
  • Taco Antenna mod (replaced broken automatic antenna)
  • Smoked LED tails
  • Clear corners and bumpers
  • Weathertech vent visors + front hood & sunroof deflectors
  • Flat black emblems + debadged rear hatch
  • Added flare edge trim
  • Removed running boards & added OEM front mud flaps
  • Cleaned up and shined up.
  • Going tomorrow to get a new set of 265/75/16 BFG ATs put on!

Next up is the stereo - the OEM 6 disc changer doesn't work, so I'm rocking the radio only. Trying to decide if I want the integrated nav or not.

Thanks for looking!

very nice! i like everything you've done... i have homemade glossy "black pearls" but i may repaint them to be flat black now!
how do you like the 35% tint on the windshield?

Thanks for the compliments! J.A. - your website was very helpful when doing research prior to purchasing and now that I've been doing work to the truck - thanks for all your effort in providing the information for folks. And to answer your question how much did I pay...the answer is: too much! ($11k). I searched for a long time high and low and this was by far the nicest example I found, and the only one I saw w/ the leather package (not sure if that combo is just extremely rare, or if the leather was a dealer installed item). It was in excellent shape when I bought it, everything works well, and was well taken care of mechanically too, so all in all I think it was a fair price.

LINY - clay bar, fine hand polish, glaze, and wax. A labor of love! Read J.A.'s website on his full detail - I did a mini version of that, but his results were pretty spectacular.

Tine - the 35% is great during the day, and a bit dark sometimes at night. On my Tundra I have a 40% tint done with Llumar ceramic film - the 5% really does make a difference and the ceramic keeps the heat down a lot better. It is about twice as much as the standard tint. Either way, with the windshield tinted and the front windows at 20% to match the back, I think the truck looks really sharp.

Sharp truck. I might be getting rid of my OEM 6 disc changer from and '02 if you're interested?

Looks good!

What is the "Taco Antenna Mod"? My antenna is shot (motor doesnt raise the antenna and it's bent). Can you give me more info on what antenna you used from a Tacoma?

Thanks!

Fireball, beeaaautiful 4runner you have there. i love everything you've done so far. Not to mention she cleans up nicely. :naughty:

I was curious where you bought your OEM Front mud flaps from and how much you payed for them.

Ever since I removed my boards, road debris coats the side of my rig.

Re: the taco antenna: I got the parts from my local dealer, but you can get them cheaper online if you're patient. One thing that writeup didn't mention was how hard it is to run the wire from the actual antenna to the back of the stereo. If I can offer a tip, cut the old wire and duct tape it to the new one, then pull the old one through the passenger side compartment until the whole assembly comes through. Once you can grab the new antenna wire behind the glovebox it's fairly simple. But without duct taping the 2 together I would've never gotten the new wire from the fender well into the passenger compartment.

Part #s are 86300-35090 and 86309-AA041. Incidentally, that antenna is the same one that came on my '07 Tundra.

Running-riot- I got the OEM front flaps from Toyota of Dallas. Ordered them online:

PT413-35966-DF and the same number ending in PF. Total price was $67.01 ---- Are they going to work with your truck? From your picture it looks like you have the limited flares which seem like they wouldn't mate up correctly.

I got the BFG ATs installed this afternoon. I can't believe how much bigger they are than my old tires. They look great! What pressure are you guys running them at? I've got them at 40psi now and the side seems pretty nice.

Kelly - which 6 disc changer do you have? If it's in great shape and everything works I might be interested. Let me know how much you want for it. Shoot me a PM or write back here. Below is a picture of the one in my truck, but I think they also made a double DIN oem 6 disc changer. Thanks.

Also, quick question all: do your Rear Defrost/Back window up down/ECT button light up when you have the lights on at night? I'm thinking I might have a bulb out, because it seems like that top row of buttons on the center console should be lit up.

BTT: can someone tell me how their lights work? I am getting no illumination out of that top row of buttons. The orange light comes on when I press the rear defrost, but that's it.

I took the piece apart last night and it appears those bulbs are all soldered to the circuit board. Can they be replaced? Any reason why they aren't lighting up?

Any help appreciated - thanks!

remove the center console, and then take off the back cover for the switches. the whole panel should pop out of the center console trim and you should be able to get to the bulbs from there. still not 100% sure what size they are

Got the new BFGs put on last weekend. This will probably complete round 1 of mods... Round 2 calls for a stereo upgrade, sliders and the front tow hook mounts, and some lighting upgrades. Stay tuned!

And this one just for fun:

Hmm. Good point. They might not fit my 4runner since it's a limited.

I'll keep looking, but thanks so much for the detailed response, and sorry for taking so long to reply!

I JUST NOW got the e-mail about this thread.
