I have been on Hells Revenge three times. I watch others do Hells Gate. Too big of a consequence if you mess up for me. Plenty of fun on the rest of the trail, and all of Moab.

And this is what can happen on Hell's Gate (result of way too much throttle):
You can do it with ATRAC only but I'd also advise having your rear locker engaged. It's not a particularly difficult obstacle but as you can see, the consequences of making a mistake are rather substantial. Having a very good spotter is paramount. I've seen many bad spotting jobs on Hell's Gate and far less really good ones (it's amazing the number of folks that will jump in to spot someone up it without having much of a clue what they're doing). Airing down to 15 lbs. is a VERY good idea. It makes slipping off the wall with your passenger side tires much less likely. You can pretty much see the proper line by looking at the tire tracks. I'd be careful of areas where there are oil spills since that seems to happen quite often. I've done it in the rain and the traction is fine so I wouldn't worry much about that. Find the absolute best spotter you can find that has experience with the obstacle and make certain you're on the same page with respect to his/her directions. Have fun should you try it.
How did this guy get out of that situation? Was he towed or flipped over and keep going? That is crazy! I would shit my pants..
Good thing he didn't keep sliding back..

I remember that day. No structural damage that I remember but we did have to put some plastic over the missing window. The driver rode with me the next day when we did Behind the Rocks or Pritchett...the trips are starting to run together.

Just about everything I've previously done to the FJ is pretty much moot at this point since it's at Redline Landcruisers in Colorado Springs getting a MAJOR re-do. All the suspension upgrades (Icon Coilovers, Rear Shocks & UCA's; Toytec rear springs; Sonoran Steel LCA's and Rear Panhard Bar) have been moved over to my 2013 4-Runner TE (new daily driver). The 4:10 gears, ARB front locker & compressor, wheels (OEM Steelies), tires (305 MT/R's), and Budbuilt skids were given to a buddy in Crested Butte who has an FJ. The FJ's getting a 4 speed Atlas Transfer Case, custom axle's front and back (yes….it'll have a solid axle front), custom designed suspension, bead-lock wheels with 37" MT/R's, ARB lockers front and back; etc., etc. I'll use the 4-Runner for light to moderate wheeling and the FJ for the serious stuff. Justin at Redline said I could race the FJ in the desert or crawl it in the rocks when he's finished. Should be done by Cruise Moab.

I'd sort of like to see it myself…….Redline has had it since early April. Took them a little over 5 months to get the Atlas T-case. I don't expect it to be finished before late spring (told them I wanted it in time for Cruise Moab). I also told them they should do a build thread on it for advertising purposes. I guess we'll see.

Yea, my 98 Tacoma and my buddy's 05 Tacoma walked right up it two years in a row. Like you said, it can definitely get hairy real quick, but once you get the right line for your rig, it is cake.

I just remembered that I had THIS video with me going down and up Hell's Gate in the rain. You'll have to suffer through a group of FJ's on Poison Spider Mesa because the Hell's Gate part is at the end. The battery in the video camera died just as I was on the last part of the obstacle; thus the rather abrupt ending.
