As a recently new registered person (been silently stalking for longer), I use both Google and Tapatalk to search the forums for information or answers. The frustrating part is I can usually find what I need. This makes it difficult to increase my post count to meet the minimum requirement to start a thread, like a "my build" thread.
I understand the need for a minimum participation count, but it does cause some problems especially with the amount of information in this forum and asking new users to search before asking a question.

There have been a sh!t ton of new members since late last year till present and I have seen posts that make me think bots are invading, however maybe it is a mixture of unfamiliar members or perhaps an entitlement mentality.
The Mod, rightly so, did something that needed to be done in my opinion. However much interest after your post, It seems that it was not so much about what the Mod was saying but moreover the treatment you feel of some members. You made your choice after the post but I bet some would have liked if you would have replied back.

I think it is a good idea because there needs to be some boundaries, and that judgement is where the moderator comes in.
Someone did allude to a point in a way; so someone posts about a Utah trip for example; while it is not directly 5th related, there is sort of a "family/friendship" feel among the members on the 5th area, versus just being tossed in the general section. I do like seeing what other 5th owners do, even though it is not "directly" 5th related. I do think it promotes the 5th gen well. But like I said, that is where the judgment of the moderator comes in.

There will always be posts that are somewhat off topic, but receive better responses here because of the relationship users have within this sub-community. This is where a moderators job becomes hard. But their involvement in this community also gives them the best insight into what to allow and what not.
