I finally got around to testing my mileage and I just got 275 miles on a full tank until my gas light came on, not bad inmho.
Most Miles on 1 Tank of gas?

my light always seems to come on between 200 and 220. At first i was really worried that I had a serious problem, but everytime i checked my mileage, i was still gettin between 16 and 17mpg (w/ 265/75's) So i figure 16mpg x 17gallons (to be safe yet somewhat thrifty) = 272. That's 52 miles after the gas lights been on in some cases, so as long as i fill it before 270, i'll be fine regardless when the light comes on...til the day I get 15 or 14 mpg and am stuck on the side of the road thanks to my ignorance
I did manage 22mpg the other day tho, with the a/c and speeds of up to 85 on a trip to grand junction.

295 Miles on my tank with 12 gallons of gas!! WOO HOO
Here is my first experience on my first tank on my new to me 2002 4wd limited,
Filled up truck after leaving dealership, drove 140 miles at 70-80 mph from north of Nashville to my home in Chattanooga.
Rest of the mileage was a combined city and Hwy.
333 miles before gas light came on. This was at approx 1/8 of a tank showing on the gauge. Was able to pull over immediately and get gas. Truck held a total of 16.05 gallons. This was just not after the 1st click on the pump I was able to squeeze a little more in, but did not fill up the neck or anything.
333/16.05= 20.74 mpg
This is with factory sized tires.

20 MPG overall every tank! Yes you can!
I get 20 MPG every tank when I fill up (except when it snows or I go 4-wheeling)!
How do I achieve such great mileage? Did I buy an additive? Did I get a new air filter? Did I get smoother tires?

Getting good gas mileage is easy and requires no investment. All you have to do is simply drive moderately: accelerate slowly, don't exceed the speed limit, release the gas pedal when you see a red light off in the distance, don't tailgate, don't speed ahead of every car just to be first waiting at the next light, and ***use cruise control***. I do all this, and I still spend a good deal of time in traffic everyday, but the results prove that it can be done.

I calculate the mpg and the results always support this simple way to get the most for your money.

Just did the first fill up on our "new" 96 that we bought a few weeks ago. Went 286 miles, the light was on for about the last 20 and the needle was on empty. Put in 15.4 gallons (it was full too, tried it again and it clicked right off). That's 18.6 mpg, about 80% city and 20% highway, AC running most of that.
I was pleased to find it so high. Like others who have posted here, I think it is due to driving moderately, never accelerating hard, etc.

I just drove from home back to college which is Maryland to the bottom of NC. I was driving about 60-80 the whole way and probably got 330 or so and i stopped for gas before i was on E. I drive the v6 3.4L. I probably could have got around 350 maybe more easily

I have a 2wd manual 2.7L 2000 base model and I have about 300 miles on the tripmeter with a quarter tank left; plus I always blast the A/C here in Phoenix. The machine is pretty much stock, except for shocks.

Holy Crap! I feel really bad for some of you guyies. I get 19mpg on average and sometimes 20. I do, however, travel a lot on the highway. I just put a True Flow filter in tonight (thanks Burtman) and I hope to see better results. I do have a Manual Tranny though. But 16 Miles to the gallon would make me want to take the bus. My dads Frontier only gets 15. I would think that Toyota would figure a way of getting better than 16mpg for a V6 but I guess not considering most of the reply's I just read. Shoot....

Yeah, Toyota has improved the MPG on 4runners some. Remember, in '99, gas was like $1.50 (Cali) and $1.10 (Iowa) and not $3.20 like today (Cali), so the industry has changed gas conservation meathods.
Mine gets about 15 MPG 'City' on average, that's with the K&N intake and a lead-foot.

Larger true 4wd SUVs just don't get much better than 18 (it's more shape and aerodynamics than the engine) in the city period and the highway is what's saving you since my mom owns a '99 Limited and is quite a conservative driver and she sees a little over 18 in the city but when she does moslty highway she can get about 21mpg.
I like to accelerate up to speed quick and I'm content with my 17mpg considering my driving and heavier,taller tires.

I normally get about 245miles from the tank driving hard all the time. Normally 75-80mph speed on the highway. I average about 18. On trips I have gotten away with 22mpg driving very smooth & setting cruise. When towing around town I get about 15. Towed a 3200 lb car on a car carrier 1600 miles at a average speed of 60mph up & down hills in idaho, utah, nevada, arizona and got 19mpg don't really understand the physics in that one other than aerodynamics and speed.

Yesterday I got my best tank ever. near 330 miles on a tank, worked out to be 21.67 mpg. Ive never seen over 20. This was my first trip with my new Doug Thorley cat-back exhaust and hi-flo cat. Although the system is fairly loud i can't complain when im getting roughtly 4mpg better than i used to...and that was with a couple passengers and luggage too!

All of it is straight freeway driving doing some 80mph. I found that if I keep my car at or below 2,500 RPM on the last gear I can get up to 330 miles on a tank. Anywhere above 2,500 RPM and the mileage per gallon starts dropping.
So I guess I found my sweet spot although I still hate putting that many miles on it not to mention spending $60 a week on gas.

Update--I replaced my air filter and I'm getting 20-22mpg on the freeway depending on how fast I go.
17 in the city, all day long. Again I have a '96 4x4 V6 auto with 145,000mi on it. Well cared for and I couldn't love the truck more...it's just awesome. I'd like to get better mileage but considering its utility, I can't complain.

I've been watch my MPG or KPL since I bought my 4runner off a friend and I never seemed to get much on a tank of gas. It seemed like the needle would start moving as soon as I pulled away from the gas station. So I have the fortunes of asking my friend what he was getting for each tank of gas and he told me I was getting way less. I was getting around 350 kms on a tank and he said I should be getting around 450-500. So the next time I went to the gas station I "forced" in more gas after the first click and sure enough, I put in about 67 liters (from gas light on to full which is 70 liters according to my manual). I've heard people complain/comment on not being able to fill the tank to full. I just had to give it a shake and play with the nozzle head to get more in. I've also read that overfilling can do some damage so certainly be careful. I've got 350 kms on my tank so far and I still have over a quarter left. It worked well for me.
I have 2000 4Runner Limited 4.3L, and get around 270 miles tank. When filling up the fuel pumps clicks off real early on the 4Runners. I can usually squeek in another 3 gallons, but I have to nurse it in REAL SLOW otherwise the pump keeps shutting off.
Anyone know of a mod to the 4Runners fuel downspount so that it doesn't fill up so quickly (evenb though the tank can still hold another 3 or so gallons)? When you fill up all the way, you get that extra 50 miles or so to the tank.
