New Light Setup - Thoughts Please

No answer from Eric either... So i spent a large chunk of today trying to decide between painless wiring aux fuse block and the blue sea set-up.... And since Antman was busy all day Armorall'ing his tires for the 8th time today, instead of answering my 500 PMs on teaching me about the history of electricity .... Not sure which setup is easier for my skill set... But Painless is in the name of one so?

I think I like the factory look of discretely putting the painless fuse block right next to the OEM one.... But with the blue sea fuse block there are several write-ups with lots of pictures of the install on are trucks which is a huge help to me.

Need to figure out if the painless wireless aux block can handle the future Mods I have planned so that I don't have to upgrade later on.

If not looks like the blue sea is the way to go.

So need to figure if painless will work for the about of AMPs or draw or volts whatever the correct term is with rigid lights,compressor, and back lighting my otrattw switches etc. also what gauge wire is needed and will the fuses in it work, or do I look on the accessory to figure out the recommend fuses need... And painless says it come with everything you need... And the instructions look like they pull power from a fuse tap instead of the direct battery... Not sure though might not be understanding. But I would rather pull from the battery and put a large fuse between the two.

Hey Vegas that's a shame because the more I look, the more I realize what a good deal it was at $95. After browsing this morning, I came across another company that builds the exact same ones. They even label the inside of the top cover with what relay/fuse is what (very factory looking). Their price is much steeper though at $225. I called them this morning and he said they are going into a run of these next week and can turn them around quickly. If we can get 10 people committed to buying them, the price drops to $190. That still seems steep for what it is (but it is def slick). I wonder if we can contact Eric from WiredWagon and plead with him for one more run... :naughty:

Thanks for looking into this... It's a little pricy for my taste... Think I am going to pull the trigger on the painless wiring harness today... Can't let my new switches sit on my shop bench too long... They are way too pretty for that! Plus that's $100 that could go towards rigid lights or Budbuilt skids or Viair compressor...the list goes on... Or take your partner out to a lovely evening at Applebee's

There is several different painless wireless setups on amazon all within $60-90... Some have water proof covers some don't, some have all key power some have 4 constant 3key power... Need to figure out which one.

There is one expensive crimper, but I figure each kit can actually be built for about $60. So by my math, if we got 10 people interested at $100 a piece = $1,000. To buy everything would be ~$60 a piece x 10 = $600 + the initial crimper $218 (CRIMPER-800 SERIES 15370042 - 500). So that would be about $818 for the $1,000 order. Not that it's any kind of real profit BUT you can make yourself one for free and still be left with the expensive crimper for future projects. So once again, before I pull the trigger on some Painless Wiring (which I really don't like now - at least compared to this setup), do we have any awesome volunteers?? Did the switches snap right in or did you have to dremel the hole slightly?

If you are already looking at something that expensive. Check out WiredHDH. (They make that thin switch panel Ducmonsta has). They have This which is really nice and worth a look.

I think they redesigned it too, back when I was looking for power management it was close to $600 and in an all aluminum enclosure. They must have redesigned and repriced it to get more business. It looks really slick though. It's still expensive, but high quality.


EDIT: on closer examination it looks almost identical to the wired wagon setup, in which case, this is very overpriced. I wish I could find their old relay box. It was a boss.

I have experience with all three (Wired HDH, Wired wagon relay, and Painless). All 3 units are installed on my truck. I originally bought the Painless stuff thinking that it was going to do everything that I needed. Realistically, you only need the HDH and Wired wagon stuff.

The Painless unit is a nice relay block. However, it will require running your switch wiring to and from the unit. Meaning, signal comes from switch, goes to relay, then comes back to power.

That's the nice thing about the HDH and Wagon units. You only have to run the wires from HDH to Wagon. All of your power leads are now accessible from the Wagon unit.

I'm still using the Painless system as they are being used for the switches next to my head unit. I'm using the HDH with the Wagon stuff. The switches are on my "flap" in the center console.

The Wagon only has 5 relays, so I originally bought 2 of them. The HDH has 8 switches. I realized that the HDH wiring/relays are good for 2.5 amps so 3 of the switches are for led components (hood light, rock lights, and scanner bar in front grill). The other 5 switches are connected to the Wagon relay box for future use. Wagon relays are good for 30 amps.

The extra Wagon relay that I had is now residing with [MENTION=64864]GotMo37[/MENTION]. I'm not sure if he plans on using it. You may want to PM him and see if he'll sell it.

I've got the crimper for the weatherpak connectors (Delphi) and I have a crimper for Deutsch pins as well (we use them on wiring harness for Cummins diesel engines). I've seen the relay board somewhere around here that wired wagon was selling, I can dust off my notes...

The truth is, haven't had the time to dedicate to the electrical stuff and had it done by my local audio guy. He did state that he had to dremel just a little. I think he might have been lying becuase they look like they would have been a perfect fit.

And rumor has it that you were the last one to purchase wire wagon from Eric before he stopped making them... What did you do to him? You push him too far? Or maybe he is chained up in that sketchy farm house you always take pics of your truck in front of? Maybe you keep him there to do all of your wiring??? I mean you have a lot of switches in your truck so it makes sense... I am not even mad at you buddy... Just see if you can get him to build me one before you make a dress out of his skin.:rip:

When I was researching these switches a few months back I think I remember FJ guys not being able to slide these into the factory switch blanks and they required a little dremeling. It would be awesome if it worked though!

It's funny you mention that becuase my buddy just picked up a '13 Trail Team FJ and was looking to install some of the OTRATTW switches. So bottom line though is that they will fit, just with the help of the dremel?

And to get back on track, do we have any volunteers to start building the Relay/Fuse Boxes?? :hungry:

Hahaha I may have been the last. I remember seeing when Ducomonsta ordered his and I asked where he got them. I then immediately contacted Eric and ordered two.

A good fuse box isn't hard to find. What IS hard to find is a good fuse AND relay box (as you guys are finding out). I spend forever researching all the options. I'm interested as to what everyone can find with Eric out of the picture now.

This is correct. I test fit one back before I had my switches installed. The factory Toyota blanks are JUST a bit to small to fit the OTRATTW blanks. But it's pretty simple to solve with a dremel or even a razor blade.
