If you've got a 3rd gen. then the front speakers are 6.5 in. and the rears are a funky 4 in. with a triangular 3 hole pattern.

I'm whipping up some adapters right now to mount standard 5.25 in. speakers in the rear -- they'll fit but need an adapter.

might want to throw out what you listen to as well. Different styles of speakers seem to work better w/ different types of music. I would throw out some suggestions, but its been a while since i actually looked for car audio style speakers. Only suggestions i will throw out is watch the impedance to make sure you get the most out the stock deck. Also pay attention to the sensitivity rating. A speaker made to handle a lot of power will not be as loud w/ minimal power (head unit only) as a speaker w/ higher sensitivity rating.

Negative commander, rear speakers in the 4runner are 5.25. They may have put 4" in the base models (crank windows) but in the SR5, SR5 Sport and the Limited the rears are 5.25 and you can easily fit a 6.5. I just cut out the center of speaker mount and they fit perfectly.MGP said:
Alpines are really good if you on a bit of a budget same with Infinity. If you're lookin to spend a little more, check out Diamond Audio or Focal. Both are kill but will set you back quite a bit and should be ran with an amp. Don't buy JL Audio speakers unless you want to get ripped off. They make amazing subs and amps but I think they hired monkeys to design their speakers.
If you listen to hip hop and rap I would suggest you go with lower priced speakers and buy a sub and amp. Not just because most people only care about the sub-bass frequencies in hip hop but because studio engineers in the hip hop bussines dont really put a lot of work into mid to high range frequencies because pretty much all rap and hip hop music is made electronicly. The reason top shelf speakers are even made are because their meant to produce every little detail that was recorded in the studio. Not just the instruments but the acoustics of the room that they were recorded in.
Which brings me to my final point. Anyone ever wonder why you always see rappers showing off their Lamborginis and million dollar mansions but rock artists are always struggling? It's not because rap sells more than rock does. It's because the cost to make a rap album is about 1/4 of the price to make a rock album. Jay-z's albums have been the most expensive albums ever produced. On average his albums cost $40,000 to produce. Blink 182 are in the runnings with the cheapest albums ever produced and while Cheshire Cat was their cheapest album produced, it still cost $120,000 to produce. Now in record label contracts, to put it basicly, you dont actually make a dime off album sells until not only do you exceed the amount it cost to make the album but you exceed the record labels share of the profit. Now considering that cds go for an average of about $15 when first released, rap artists are going to be able to pay off the debt from their album faster than rock artist are going to. Well here ya go. Look familiar? As you can see, yes the diameter of the cone is in fact 4" but thats NOT how speakers are measured.MGP said:

Here is an old 5.25" Boston Acoustic which as you can see measures 5.25" in mounting diameter.

Here's the 4runners front speakers. Which everyone will agree is a 6.5" speaker. Oh but the cone diameter is 5.25" so does this mean that the front speakers are 5.25"?
And here's the Toyota front speaker measured 6.5" on the mounting diameter. Maybe next time you should get your facts straight and not just go by what someone else said on the internet. Especially when your giving information to someone whoes about to do an install :flipoff: :chair: :FOS:

Don't even look at that link MGP posted. There's someone on there talking about the fronts being 7" and another guy saying they're 6.75" :twak: Your front speakers are 6.5" and your rears are 5.25" you can cut out the center of the mounting plate on the rears to fit 6.5" easily. Make sure you get component speakers for your fronts unless you dont want tweeters anymore or you have a base model (crank windows). Also, as stick figure mentioned, pay attention to impedance. The 4runners stock speakers are 8ohms but all Ive ever seen in the aftermarket world are 4ohms which a pioneer head unit produces anyways so you're pretty much safe there but there are 2ohm speakers out there.

Matt---You can't attribute rappers supposdly having more money to having records that were cheaper to produce. That sounds like BS to me. Lol. Maybe rappers just throw their money around like it's going out of style.

Hey Matt, by your words and pics, I assume you've done the mod to after-market 6.5" rear speakers that you speak of (cutting out the center of the mounting plate).
Do you have any problems with the rear windows hitting the speakers when rolled down? Have you checked for this?
One of the things that has held me back changing out the speakers was that I've read spacers were needed to keep the speaker magnet from interfering with the window. If those are NOT needed, I might get new speakers sooner. TIA.

I know this is true from actual measurements from a '96, a '98, a 2000 and a 2002. I have seen them listed from several reliable sources as 7" and I have stated that several times in other post. Tonight I actually measured the removed speakers I have in my garage and it was dead on 6.75".
As far as the rear goes it is a little confusing. The factory rears should probably be considered 4" as that is the speaker size, but the large mounting ring and cardboard baffel make the speaker "assembly" more like a 5.25 inch. I have a 4" set of Alpines in my Jeep and the speaker cone is the same size as the 4runner cone but the mounts vary by about an inch. You cannot just swap them for a 5.25" using a factory bracket for sure in the '98 and 2000 that I have worked on, but they can be modified to take a 5.25" or a 6.5". If anyone wants more info on this I have pictures and some recommendations, but I know we are trying to keep this neat.

100% agree! With type r's your going to need an amp for just the speakers themselves. Those are competition grade speakers. You will be just fine with the type-s'. I recently put the type s component setup up front and 2 6.5 type-s' in the rear and was wondering why my windows were hitting them when they rolled down?!? with that answered ill be heading back to BB to get some 5.25 type s'.
You can't go wrong with the alpine type-s', best bang for your buck!

Ahh, good thinking. The real deal would be to get something from Circuit City while they are going out of business. I'm not sure if they are already closed though.
