New Tires for a 14,000 mile roadtrip

Hey guys,
I searched around and there was a wealth of info regarding tires but was wondering if there was anything to might specificly pertain to constant milage.

Little back story, my wife and I and our two small dogs are going on a 3 month roadtrip across the country. We're hitting about 30 states and 20 national parks. We'll have a Tepui RTT, Dometic 75 and all the other goodies.

I am looking to get some fresh tires for this trip to make sure we're good to go. I have a 2006 Limited with stock 18" wheels with a 3in lift.

May I ask for some input on what you guys might suggest? I will be doing minimal offroading, mostly pavement and the occasional dirt trails but would like to be prepared for any terrain.

BFGs are gonna be loud, not ideal for a long ride.

I have Nitto Ridge Graps in 265/75/18 with an XL load rating.

If you're doing mostly pavement, then I would go with an even less aggressive tread pattern than that would be quieter than both the BFG or Ridge Graps... Discoverer AT3s or the Toyo Open Country come to mind first.

Falken Wildpeak AT3W. Had some used ones before I got my Yokohama Geolandar G003s and they are excellent. Even low tread they are quiet, comfortable, and do well offroad. If you want a more extreme recommendation (MTs) check out the G003s. They are freaking awesome too but obviously MTs have their drawbacks although mine aren't too loud and the tread life is excellent so far.

I seem to be in the minority as far as this forum goes for tires, but I'm running Firestone Destination AT2's and they are no louder than my Bridgestone all seasons that I had on before. They're also P rated, so relatively lightweight for an AT tire. If I remember right, they're only like 8lbs heavier than the Bridgestone all seasons I had on before, and they're 2" taller.

Have taken multiple 1000+ mile road trips with them and love them so far!

I forgot to consider road noise as well. I would definitely want something somewhat quiet but also want to have a good tire after the trip. I'll be moving to Colorado (from SoCal) right after so it might be smarter to go more aggressive perhaps?

I love the look of the G003's but they look loud but seems like they're not as loud for you?

I dont have any other MTs to compare them to, but they arent bad to me, this is very subjective though. Same with exhaust

What he said. Best tires I've ever owned. Even put them on my wife's nondescript CUV because of how quiet they are and how good they've been in ice/snow. Michelin all the way.

Another vote for Falken Wildpeak AT3W. About 10k on them and they're awesome. Even wear, quiet and do great in wet/snow. 55k mile warranty also.

Cooper Discoverer ATW is what I have, super quiet on the road and still aggressive enough for minimal off road driving. Make sure you get P rated (for the better MPG's) and 5 tires, one for your spare. And lube up that spare tire cable in case you get a flat.

I am going to second this. I just moved on from a job at a tire store and the head mechanic had KO2s, KM3s, and is on General Grabber A/Ts right now and loves them. He went from Salt Lake to Arkansas and said they did great. I put them on my mom's Ford Escape. I run KO2s in a bigger size C load. I still get just under 19 MPG on road trips and have NEVER noticed road noise. I put Falken Wildpeaks on my brother in laws 4th gen and he likes them, took a small hit to his MPG.

I'd say the Generals.

There you go -- fantastic and long wearing road tire, decent off road tire. You're doing 15,000 miles, why 1/2 way wear out a set of offroad tires when you can be only 1/5!of the way through a set of LTXs?

Very true. With this trip I'll be wearing down the tire pretty fast.
