NYC-Runner Build Thread

When I first purchased my 4Runner 3 years ago I had no idea I was going to get so involved with it the way I did and in the off road community.Needles to say it's been an amazing experience and I have made a ton of great new friends and a enormous amount of invaluable knowledge! Originally I kept telling myself it's fine I'll just mod it a little bit here and there and still keep it on road friendly lol fast forward to now, don't get me wrong it's still very on road friendly and wouldn't hesitate to pack the family up and take it across country or anywhere else for that matter 1000s of miles away! But I come to the point where we need another DD and highway runner so I can stop putting so many highway miles on the 4Runner and keep it for weekend use and wheeling and camping trips!

The new ride we picked up today! Volvo V70R I'm super stoked to have it and look forward for many years of good trips and tasteful mods!

Pumpkin head lives! Love that lights up.

What mounts are you using on the awning, and we're you able to keep your lights on that side as well mounted to the roof rack ?

Bobby

Haha just having some fun buddy, the kids love it!

I fabbed up some mounts using 1" flat stock that i had lying around the garage and picked up some Ubolts from tractor supply, worked great! Yeah the awning sit just above the lights so it worked out perfect.

I was just actually talking to my sister about possibly coming down for Thanksgiving but i may be taking the new ride thought so i don't think we'll be able to wheel:moping:

The pumpkin snorkel head is awesome. Are you using just a small LED to light it up?

Love the V70R choice. Excellent cars. I'd love to have a S60R for a daily.

Awesome about the awning and lights. That is a future project for me.
Baby number 2 is due December 2nd so I will be hanging low pretty soon :)

Does the Volvo have a third row? At first as was like what just happened,? lol. But then the family man came out in me and I was like well it makes sense now.

I love th pumpkin mod on the snorkel. Now to get it to make spooky noises. :bat: Haha

Yes i cut a hole in the back and put a small led light in there and i can switch off and on.

I'm new to the volvo scene but my buddy got one and then i started researching them and fell in love, especially with the R's. I really wanted a S60R and was looking into those but i figured if i could find a nice clean V70R i would get that since their a little more rare and i like the sleeper sports wagon! And these things are ridiculously plush and comfy inside!

Thanks bud,, The awning been on the list for a while and i finally pulled the trigger on a GB a couple of months ago. it came in very handy on the last trip that we took! I'm also going to get one for the trailer when i finish that up and i think i'm going to get the room that attaches to it to so it can also be used as a tent, my buddies all have them and they work great!

Awesome buddy Congrats!!! My wife is itching right now so i know it's only a matter of time. Were trying to push it back a couple years till we can buy a bigger place in the city,, it's tough in the city man soo expensive! Plus id be happy to get one of my boys off to college first haha crazy man time flies!

This one doesn't have the 3rd row but it can be added, I've already looked into it ;) It would be the oldshool backwards facing third row which is pretty cool. Oh don't let the wagon fool you bro these are one of the biggest sleepers with the 2.5 5cylinder turbo awd their pushing 300hp stock their fast cars! I was looking into other sedans and stuff but most a too small and didn't want to buy a BN car or take on a car payment, didn't want another SUV so the sports wagon was a good fit. I like the sports wagons, their not for everybody though, the wife stiff has mixed feeling about it but she said the same thing when i bought the 4runner haha.Their not as popular here as they are in Europe or south america.

Yeah i'll put a strobe in their and get loud speaker and drive around on Halloween and scare the crap out of the kids haha

This build is amazing, just went through all the pages. Great work man! How do you like the top mounted LED bar? does it create any kind of reflection issues off the hood?

Hey man thanks,,, The roof bar is great and kicks out a ton of light! No i don't have issues with it reflecting off of the hood, I do have my truck plastic dipped so it's Matte so idk if that plays a part or not but it's been awesome..

Really appreciate the info. I've gotten a ton of great ideas from your build. Just picked up a 2006 and going to start building it out. Is there anything you would have done differently looking back?

Absolutely bro,, Thats what this forums all about:thumb: Awesome man!

Hmm well that's a good question,,, I guess from the jump i would of listened to other and just went straight to a real suspension instead of running springs/spacers. Then again i learned more about my truck by doing the suspension twice haha Other than that it's a process man and an enjoyable one watching your truck transform and grow so it's good to take your time sometimes,,and do tons of research!

Is the part number for the snorkel you have is Part: ARB1004 from a 1991-1997 LC80 land cruiser?

See here. Slee - Snorkels

I think you have an eBay version but I want to get the safari.

Please let me know. Are you happy with the figment? Did you drill into the A pillar also?

Yes i believe if your going to go with the ARB Snorkel that is the correct one.

YEs i've been happy with the fit and finish overall. Their not specifically made for our rigs so of course their not perfect. Which is also part of the reason i went with the eBay one because i knew either way it wasn't going to be a 100% so i didn't want to spend the extra money because nothing ARB is cheap!

Yes i did have to drill two holes in the A pillar and used self tapping screws.

Went and played in a little Rock garden today. One of my abs sensors or harnesses is bad so it made things a little more interesting with no atrac but I was still able to make it through with out any issues. Just a few extra bumps here and there!

Although it wouldn't be so on rocks, I've found the lack of ATRAC very beneficial in every other form of offroading. ATRAC is great, but far to limiting.

It was screwing me when i was in a bad off camber or when the front tires were trying to grab, they were just spinning like crazy when they couldn't catch and would end up bouncing a bit which can be sketchy and how you snap a CV real quick. With the atrac it will transfer the power and lets it catch and just crawl! If my atrac was working today i probably could of made it thru that whole rock garden today without the locker no problem.. Atrac has gotten me thru some gnarly stuff and is way more capable than people think! But i do love my rear locker though:whoo:

Ya wouldn't be so great without it on rocks! Lol. I've had a few times where I needed it since breaking the abs sensor, but I will definitely do the cut off mod now after not having it. So much easier to get through sand and mud without it!

Damn sorry to hear that bro! How did you do that?

No I don't have my old 3rd I sold it to another member on here earlier in the year.

If I were you I would look on eBay for one with bad pinion bearing and then send it to ECGS and have them rebuild it with a solid pinion spacer and add gears at the same time, that's what I did. Then you can also purchase a front clamshell from them and then just send back your old f&r's as the cores. As far as a shop in the city goes idk? We did mine a my buddies house in CT with the help of him and my other Yota buddy who have both done multiple diff swaps so they had a majority of the experience. It took us all day and we swapped out the entire rear housing which made it easier. Doing a retro fit is going to take a little more time. I would maybe ask a few other local members if they know any shops in the NYC area. My one buddy used to use a shop in the Bronx but I think they were more LC guys but I can reach out to him if you want and get the name of the shop?
