Just got mine done. Pilkington windshield for $130 tax included & installed.

I've driven with this damage since 2006...it's only gotten larger with the cracks extending out like the Grand Canyon since that fateful March day.

I took a stone hit about 6 months after I purchased my 4Runner back in 2004.
I had a local auto glass chain (Cindy Rowe) replace the windshield with OEM Toyota Glass. Still have the same windshield today (5+ years later).
My auto insurance covered the glass replacement. IIRC I paid $50 (deductible) that was it.

BTW, I took my 4Runner to their shop and had them do it there.
I had the option to have it done in the parking lot at work but after hearing horror stories about "field installed windshields"
I chose the level, climate controlled, environment of their shop to have the work done.

Anyone know if you can get bulletproof glass as a replacement and if it will resist chipping or cracking from rocks? Here is a place that does stuff for Land Cruisers including glass:

Bullet resistant glass is about 2 inches thick and it sucks as a windshield.


I had mine replcaed at safelite. Talked them down to $217 + tax. They used their own glass, its ok.

Don't know the other side of the story, but I'd read through this before using Safelite. I'm not saying don't use them as it seems people have had good luck, but something to keep in mind.

Maybe.:naughty: I have gave it a thought. Nah, i just wanted to see if someone else would consider it. If you have to pay so much to have a windshield replaced and have had it replaced several times for the same reasons then an indestructable windshield would be a good solution. Anyway, it is not even as thick of a material as oem. It is a much stronger material called Polycarbonate the same stuff they use in Lightforce off road lights and athelettes sunglasses. It is shatter resistent and virtually bulletproof.

Offshorebeater, yea it is lighter, thinner not 2 inch thick glass and it can withhold a very strong blast from a rock hitting with zero damage i am pretty sure. I might be serious now? Nah,:wink2:

Went with the cheap install today: 45 min and $135 total ($6.00 burrito next door from the roach coach) and it's done.

Doesn't say Toyota in the lower left. Didn't bother checking with my insurance company as it's always been my experience that the coverage is better paid out of pocket (versus the hassle of switching to glass coverage and cancelling 6 months later).

As for the hydrophobic coating - I have rainx for that and even with the original toyota & rainx, it doesn't perform any better than my other vehicles with just rainx (Mercedes, BMW, Infiniti)
