The V8 will eventually show up but it won't be for the initial release and I bet by next year it will be an option so if we can get past it's looks the 4Runner will be fine.
BTW my '99 stickered just over $35,000 in late '98 (my mom's '99 Limited was almost $38k) so really Toyota has done a decent job of keeping prices fairly unchanged and a 4th gen SE can be had for less and I bet it's the same with the 5th gens and to keep the prices down some things need have corners cut unfortunatly.

The V8 smooth !!..even in mountains
and I wonder how many V8 owners regreted that they just want a V6?
compare to V6 owners that they actually like your V8 ( because its just probably 2-3 gal max gas savings)..Well, it would be a reason if the gas will go back to $5.:thumb3:

I hear V8 guys say that often, "It's only like 2-3 mpg difference". Well when you're only getting 16 city, 3 mpg is like 20% worse (read: substantial, forgive my math). If you're rich, don't have to pay for gas, live in the mtns. or truly need to tow - then sure - V8 all day baby. But for the masses, the 6 is plenty sufficient. The "new" V6 should be even more impressive. But you guys who say a six cylinder engine sounds like a vacuum cleaner will probably never give it a chance and should go Lex GX V8. Call it 6 bias - I don't care - someone has to stand up for the damn 6!

Sure, but personally I don't find any need to stick up for the V6. Everyone has opinions both ways. The V6 works for me in every situation imaginable. More than enough power, smooth & quiet with a nice sound, relatively economical, what else could I possibly need?
So let anyone say anything they want and it doesn't bother me. If I were buying another 4Runner today, I'd choose the V6 again without question. Don't let it bother you if some people just don't understand!:bluejump:

love the v8 hate filling her up. but im lucky cause my dad said if i put gas in it he'd pay insurance. so i cry at the pump when i let it go down to where i can only go 6 miles before runnin outta gas and its like 49-52 bucks!!

Yup, that is what I believe as well.
Now that the lack of a V8 engine is offical, I can start planning to get the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee when it comes out. V8 power, adjustable ride height, updated interior and exterior. :bluejump:

You know, I was considering the same thing. The '11 Grand Cherokee is an awesome looking machine and has some nice features. It's just that Jeep pretty much sucks ass when it comes to reliability. I don't know if I could see myself going from rock solid reliability of the 4Runner to the likelihood of owning a Jeep that is sure to be a POS in terms of reliability.
If you're so hung up on having a V8, just give Toyota a year (or maybe two) and I bet we'll see a return of the V8 engine in the 5th gen. I could be wrong, but wouldn't it suck if you gave up on a V8 5th gen for a Grand Cherokee and then Toyota offered it the next year?

Having had both V6 and now a V8, there is a fairly noticeable difference in gas mileage, 20% sounds right. Performance wise, there is nothing I threw at the V6 that it didnt handle. I found it to be more than enough for my needs, and quite efficient if I did my part. Engine choice was really immaterial the 2nd time around, there was 1 4R in 2 weeks of searching that met my requirements (Ti Silver 4x4 Sport) and it happened to be a V8 and right down the street from me. Currently I dont really use MPG, I go by time between fill ups. If I can go 2 weeks and still have 1/2 tank Im doing good. 20% can save me a few trips riding in to work on my bike. I think the 4.6L would be killer to have in the 4R but I doubt it for a few years at least. The V8 aint got nothin on the V6 at oil change time though!

Oh man, did they also really put the bluetooth controls on the lower left of the dash?? There is a good reason why that spot is typically reserved for things like power outlet & traction control buttons that aren't used very often!
And the top picture on that article (front shot) makes me want to hurl - I greatly dislike the pathfinder and have always thought it was just about the ugliest common suv on the road, but it just received some competition for that title with this new T4R.

They didn't replace the V8 with a 4 cylinder. The new V6 they are offering is the replacement for the V8. It has about the same HP as the old V8.

From other comments on the subject, those pics are from the accessory catalog. That's the addon bluetooth. Bluetooth from the factory should have the controls on the steering wheel.

A V8 is about torque...not hp. Every person who buys a V8 knows this. The torque is what will pull your heavy boat up out of the water on a slippery boat dock...not horsepower. Just because the new V6 has about the same amount of hp, doesnt mean its a direct replacement for the V8 due to its lack of torque.

No kidding. The V6 isn't that far behind the old V8 in torque either. The funny thing is that most of the guys whining about the V8 getting the axe would probably be fine with the new V6. I mean, seriously...it's not like the V8 engine option has been there all along. It was only offered on the 4th generation and most people who purchased 4Runners opted for the V6 anyway.
If someone really needs to tow something very heavy, there are better choices than a 4Runner, regardless of the engine.

As explained to you above, hp is not the only reason many of us love our V8. There are good reasons why many luxury vehicles that will never tow or haul anything have more than 6 cylinders in them - smoothness, quickness, torque, etc are all traits that a V8 offers in abundance over their v6 counterparts. No one is saying the v6 is a poor engine, just that the 4th gen V8 is better for our needs/wants.

BTW, I forgot to mention that a slippery boat dock has nothing to do with anything in regards to toque or HP. That's simply a matter of traction. So there is zero advantage for either engine when pulling a heavy boat up a "slippery" boat dock.
And you also have to consider gearing as well. Torque multiplication is a result of gearing, which basically means that switching to low gear on a 4Runner should give you all the torque you need to pull a very heavy boat up a ramp. Hell, even the 4 cyl. engine shouldn't have a problem pulling a boat if you're using low gear.

Okay, thanks for listing the available engines. But here's the problem: The 4 cylinder engine did not replace the V8 engine. What really happened is this: The V6 replaced the V8 and the 4 cylinder replaced the V6. In other words, the V6 is now the powerful engine and the 4 cylinder is now the more economical engine. Hence, it is easy to see why it is foolish to say that Toyota replaced the V8 with a 4 cylinder engine.
