So I'm getting ready to paint my LC rims, but was looking for some advice. Should I paint them before putting the tires on or after? I'd rather not have them get scratched and chipped when the tires get mounted, but it also is a lot easier to paint them without the tires on.
Also anyone have any suggestions for a drill mounted wire wheel to scuff up the paint?

Sc,
I would do it without the tires on cause you can get to the spots you can't reach once the tire is mounted.
For roughing up the paint, I ran an air compressor with an scour pads (3m ones). I did also use the drill with an metal cup wire brush but found out the air compressor way was better.

Thanks Supra, I've done it with the tires and it's annoying. No air compressor for me, but I will try the scour pads and get a wire brush as well. Hopefully I can get the rims done this Sat and get the tires Sun.

Just painted mine too!

I just painted my rims this past weekend and had them off. I took them to lyods tire downtown santa cruz and they have a machine that wont touch the wheel as the tire goes on. They did a great job of installing them with no scratches. However there is some pressure that is put on the rim when the tire goes over it, but it did not take any paint off. I hand sanded allfour wheels with 400 grit wet sandpaper and some scuff pads. I was told that when sanding make sure to get all the shiny gloss off so that the paint will stick to it. I tried a drill but it was way too harsh on the wheel. Maybe a different bit would have worked better but i didnt experiment. Also , one tip i would give you would be to sand the lugnut wells good. I didnt and when i tightened my lugs the paint chipped off.
I painted 3 coats of self etch primer 3 coats of rustoleoum gray metallic, and 3 coats of clear.

Lyods tire
It cost $10 bucks per tire to balance and $5 a tire to put on. Good luck and dont skimp on the prep work!

That cheap. I'm pretty sure it was close to $100 when I called last. Did you buy tires from them as well?

This is not my truck, but I feel like posting it since I hardly ever see any 2-tone wheels. If you scroll down a bit you'll see them. They are exactly opposite of 99limitedblk's painted wheels.

What do you guys think with regards to colour? Should I go with grey or black? If anyone is bored and/or good at Photoshop, have at it.:driving:

Thanks so much. I'm thinking black might be a little too dark due to the fact that the truck is silver with all the chrome, clear corners, etc.
Hyper silver looks really slick on her, IMO.

Anyone use the Hammered Finish? I might do a black hammered finish because my rims are perfectly smooth.

My wheels are hammered grey. I love em. Good paint and hide most imperfections!

Don't know how I missed that one. I even posted in your thread. Do you have any close ups to see the texture? I think this will help with my rims.
