There is a huge difference between oil filter housing for 3.5L (same as filter housing for 2.5L I-4) and 4.0L Toyota V-6 engines. 3.5L/2.5L filter is substantially shorter compared to 4.0L filter. I would not mess with getting a 3.5L housing for the sake of having a metal housing. Too much or little oil pressure is not good and may impact the longevity for that particular engine. I am not going to pretend that I know more than the Toyota engineers who purposely selected different filter housing for 4.0L engines. It is much cheaper for Toyota to go with one-size filter housing instead of having different housings for various engine sizes.
