Options for replacing stock JBL subwoofer in 2004 Limited

Hi, I recently bought a 2004 Limited... I couldn't be happier. I'm a first time Toyota driver, and I am beyond impressed. Tightest and smoothest ride I've ever been in, even more so than my previous Infiniti. I'm now loyal to the Toyota brand!

I need some advice*** I have the JBL sound system with navigation, but the sub is definitely blown. It is rattling and sounds awful. I tried to search for options, but I mostly just found how to get to it, and then most people did custom installs with their own amp, etc. I'm not very technical when it comes to audio... I simply want to take out my old sub and put it in a new one. My questions is:What are some compatible speakers that can use the original amp and setup? I would even like the original, but I don't see any available.

Advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the site. There's a section just for Audio. Search that forum for "subwoofer" in the titles and you should find some reading material.

Check the link in my sig. I wasn't able to find any aftermarket subs that would work very well with the stock system. Adding a small amp is very simple. I wouldn't completely rule that option out.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. Here's my solution so far.



I will be adding an amp to run this. Since I have the no-frills SR5, I expect to find room where the Nav ECU would have gone to put the amp.

I needed to remove all the bracing on the inside of the sub enclosure that would be behind the sub magnet but that was not difficult. (I used a hammer and chisel since I'm a wood worker and that worked really well; the chisel needs to be really sharp and you need to take your time)

I suspect that I will need to trim the inside of the body panel as the mounting flange of the sub is a little proud of the enclosure.

I'll post more as project progresses.

Are you in luck or what ! If you really want that original sub, I happen to have the brand new one that I removed from the above pictured enclosure. I'll sell it to you for $50.00 plus shipping. Sub has never been used.

I have no idea what Toyota gets for a replacement sub alone so you might want to check on that to see if that price is fair. I know the sub enclosure (which included the speaker) was a pretty spendy way to keep it all looking stock.

My personal preference would be to replace it with something of better quality but the original would be the easiest and you can follow Ark_Swamp's tutorial to change it yourself.

I know the sound isn't an upgrade, but after having vehicles where I tried a lot of after market stuff, I'm ready to keep things simple! I hate having to deal with running wires and pulling up sections of the car. I also don't want to draw attention (I had a car broken into because I was a dumb kid always blasting his subs). If I was as skilled as some of you I would probably have a different opinion!

Hello,

I'm new to this forum, sorry if it is no compatible to the topic

I would like to buy the subwoofer for my 4Runner 4th gen
I have a Sport Edition 2005 V8 and there is no JBL audio and no subwoofer. It is just space with sidebar boxes for some staff.

I would like to replace it with original plastic box as at the beginning of the topic and may be event without subwoofer I can put some other
Also it would be good to have amplifier included

May be you know someone who has it or could advice any web site except ebay to find?

A bit of advice for those wanting to keep the stock sub enclosure, deaden the hell out of it

Several layers of your favorite sound deadener or better yet 1/4" of fiberglass layered onto it.

Stock woofer is not much to get excited about.

Anybody measure the internal volume of the stock enclosure? Very important info when looking at the specs of any aftermarket driver as matched up right one might get a relatively decent amount of bass out of it.

Another option if you do not have rear seat passengers often or little ones, mount a .60 or so enclosure with a decent 10" sub on one side in the foot well or go a bit narrow and tall, never a square shape, behind the console.

Want to go a bit overboard, mount the spare tire with the inner part of the wheel facing up and over a dish fabbed into the floor to hold a good 12 and perhaps a 15. Upfiring will couple to the forward part of the cabin well when phased properly.

I have used a tire well on a hatch I formed into a bell shape then used fiberglass and baltic birch plywood, 2.2 cubs, 20 lbs, single sealed Arc 15, 1KW, 138.4 db of audiophile bass, just to show what can be done with a bit of work and forethought

Bumping this thread again (and will also search the Audio section)... if anyone has a stock sub for 4th gens that they'd like to sell, please let me know.

Don't need the enclosure or amp, just the speaker, if possible.

Please also make sure that the outer edge of the speaker diaphragm is free of holes or tears.
