OW 2.0 2.5 owners, give your two pennies!

Thank you :hello:

Put the lift on then decide. You aren't going to put the tires on first so see how you feel about it yourself. I wanted bigger tires for better performance on the trail, not looks but I honestly like the look better too. All comes down to personal preference.

Would you say you love the 285s with the kind of trails you hit Marc? I might try them this year, we'll see. I can tell you the other day I went across a 150 yard mud patch that was looser than I thought. It felt very boaty on my 265s. That is my fear on the 285s, that they get less contact pressure. Then again, I like dry rocky trails, so maybe not such a big deal. Glad you chose on performance and not looks... although of course I agree the 285 looks better with the lift than a 265.

As said above fit and see what you think. Also typically AT tires with more square shoulders tend appear visually more beefy and fill out wheel wells better than highway tires of the same size. So you may want to see what the AT 265s may look like on your 4Runner first before upsizing.

Very true. I think the DuraTrac especially looks fine, with its rather aggressive sidewall pattern.

453030's 265 actually look perfect. Thanks! In looking at other pics here I got the impression that stock sized would look like small donuts so I'm relieved as I wanted to stay with 265/70/17 for a number of reasons, mostly off road performance.

And now we are officially off in the weeds :lmao:

Yeah, I was going to wait to see how they look before up sizing - I'm dumber than the average bear but not THAT dumb ;):

From the weeds to the mud :bravo:

Absolutely love them. Are you airing your tires down when you go on a trail? Generally I'm running my Duratracs at about 15psi off road. That way you get more tread contacting the ground for better traction, a bit of protection for your tires against sharp rocks, and it's also easier on the trail (Tread Lightly!). When you say "boaty" do you mean like they were bogging down or that they felt like they were floating? Floatation can actually be a good thing as it'll keep you from bogging down, especially on snow - something we know a bit about up here in the Great White North...

Sorry for the OT digression.

Thanks Friend. I know when I first installed the lift and set it down on the concrete they looked lost. Of course, you need to drive a bit after having everything fully extended. I will say that after a few weeks or maybe a month the truck settled to where it is, so don't be alarmed if at first they look too small. I believe they look fine. What is funny is a few people have commented in parking lots that the "huge" tires look great. Kudos to Toyota for getting us 265s stock (even though the Trail should at least ship with BFG ATs!).

I did mean it as floaty. Of course that can be good in mud as you say so you don't sink; I guess it just felt like there was not much control. Probably just the nature of loose mud. I tend to believe more contact pressure is best in most situations. Much of my snow / ice driving is highway, so it is usually a thin hard packed layer, and for that the extra width of the 285 is not preferred.

I have aired down to around 25 for off road trails. I usually run at 44. Guess I can go even lower next time.

Here is a nice example of aggressive 265 tires with a lift. I think 265 will look good with a lift, can't wait to see some pics! =)

iDRiVaT4R's 4Runner Trail
totally agree. Nathan's OW lifted TE w/265 MT tires shows how "right" a lifted 5G can look with better (but still stock size) tires. further into his thread you can see it actually looked a little tamer after moving up to 285s with a less aggressive AT pattern. wondering how 265 Duratracs would look with that setup...

I went through all this a about 4 months past.

I went with the OW 2.5 set up, with heavier rear springs.

I am so glad I did. It rides great, drives great, and if I had not put 285 Duratracs on there, I would be wishing I had.

Get some sliders, some skids, and you can add front and rear bumpers if you decide you want to.

I have about 3000 miles on my set up and it is a great rig.

Just order the parts and find someone who knows how to put them together! Do it now, quit wasting time. Zombies are coming, etc.

Awhile back on this thread I posted about bumps sounding much more harsh since I put the OW 2.0 with LR UCA on. Well I went to the dealership and they didnt have a clue so I continued to search the internet. Qjake put a video on another thread of how to install the LR UCA's and that's where I found my problem. When I put my new UCA's on I had the entire vehicle in the air and I just cranked the nut on the long frame bolt on as hard as I could with the suspension drooped. I knew nothing about putting the nut on loose and then loading and stabilizing the suspension. Today I seem to have rectified the problem, I loosened the nut, loaded and stabilized the suspension and then torqued to 85 ft/lbs. Bumps in the road are now muffled and not near as loud or harsh. The fix certainly makes me enjoy the suspension much much more now. Not 100% sure, but I don't recall seeing anything in the instructions that came with the UCA's that described the loading and stabilizing part of the suspension. Although I have been wrong before....

I asked phillyd2 about how he liked his OW lift and he suggested I post my question here so maybe others could chime in and help the people like me who are undecided. So here's what I asked:

"Now that you've had the OW & SAW setup for a while, how would you rate it?

What I'm wondering about is the ride mostly. How would you rate the ride quality (both before and after) on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being like floating on air and 10 being a rigid suspension. I guess I should also ask how much lift you have dialed in since that will affect the ride too?

I've been considering the same set up but am concerned about the harshness for a daily driver."

Anybody?

You couldn't give an answer to the question that isn't subjective because tires and driving style/habits play a large part in the ride feel too.

I like my OW kit and if I had to do it all over again I'd get another kit from them. The ride is great both on and off road. My truck is my daily driver and while I have no illusions about it being a Porsche 911 it handles and corners well for a truck its size. Off road the suspension has handled everything I've thrown it at. You really can't beat the customer service that Andries and Mark provide either.

You're running the 2.0 kit correct? and @ 2.5-3?

I'm running 2.5 OW with SAW rear coils. I also opted for the 650 lbs coils up front instead of the 700 that they usually supply with the 2.5 kit. And I'm running stock sized tires but they are E rated.

So far I'm very pleased with all. The ride is a bit rougher on the highway but I think it's mostly due the rubber.

My truck is not my daily driver so my matrix is different than most of you guys.

Handling is great. No body roll. Speed bumps at 20+ mph are almost invisible. Off road the set up has been stellar.

Like everybody says, their customer service has been perfect. I would have been fine with the 2.0 setup since I'm not adding a bumper but I remain a big fan of overkill.

I still need to adjust the front coils as they did not ship set to the lowest level as they were suppose to. I'm waiting till I finish adding weight to the engine bay. Only the batteries remain that would be of any weight.

Overall I would give them a 8 per Dave's scale. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

2.0 kit that was initially set up to lift 2.5" all around. Forgot to mention that different backspacing with aftermarket wheels or wheel spacers will also make a difference in handling - especially cornering. I'm guessing that once I get my full BudBuilt skids that'll change my handling as well due to the shift in centre of gravity from the weight. So many variables come into play once you start modding that will affect how your truck handles and behaves...

I'm stuck between the 2.5 or 2.0's. Only want 2" lift to 2.5" max and no plans for bumper. Do plan to run the Bud built front hidden winch/winch, full bud skids and sliders but thats it.

The 2.0 is fine for you. I have it and run all those accessories except the winch. I will likely add that too. I would have no concerns about adding front or front and rear bumpers to my 2.0 kit, it can certainly handle it. And the ride currently is perfect, and I'm on tires as stiff as they come.

I don't recall the BB skid package creating a noticeable difference in handling. It certainly spreads weight pretty evenly front front to rear. You get a little more bias to the left with the gas skid. But on a 5000+ pound truck, this added 200 pounds (I know, the whole package is 250 or so, but you do remove maybe 50 pounds of stock skids) does not change much. I like having the extra weight all on the bottom anyways.

Awesome thanks .. what ride height are you currently set at? What spring rate? and did you get the full 2.0 with rear OW rear springs as well? Thanks

Sounds like you will have the BB same set up as me. Per everybody 2.0 will be more than fine....which is why I went with 2.5 :hatsoff:

How much softer do you think your ride is than the real 2.5 kit? You have the same 650 pound coils up front as the OW2.0 kit. Are your SAW coils softer than the 2.0 kit's rear coils? I remember asking Andries about them and I think they were rated lighter. I imagine your ride is much more like the 2.0 kit than the 2.5.
