What exactly is the shift solenoid e for? People are saying trans lockup and others are saying park neutral.

Currently randomly having this code show up. If I don’t have o/d the transmission doesn’t overheat on long drives. If it’s on then it will show the a/t temp light after a few hours of driving at around 70-75mph.

Anybody had this issue? What fixed it?

Thanks everyone

Shift solenoid E is for torque converter clutch lockup. It could be caused by either a failing/failed shift solenoid E, a failing/failed torque converter clutch, or possibly wiring/ecm. (This is coming from my 2000 FSM.) If your torque converter is never locking up when you are driving fast enough for lockup to occur (usually 46 mph and over) then your transmission is generating a ton of extra heat and you are toasting your transmission fluid and internals.

How does your transmission fluid smell?

You could need a torque converter or a shift solenoid E or a new transmission depending on how much damage was done.

So the fluid doesn’t really smell burnt. It’s slightly brown. Gonna get it flushed. But this problem just started. I don’t have any gear slipping or any clunking coming from the transmission when I shift. It had this code about 2years ago, (50k miles) had the trans filter replaced and fluid changed. And haven’t had it again. Now it just came back.

I highly doubt a fluid change is going to fix anything again especially since the fluid isn't in terrible condition. People have either had to change the shift solenoids, torque converter, or transmission to fix this.

Any good places for the solenoid besides the dealer? Lol

I have the same code on my son’s 2002. It is intermittent, but seems to come on after climbing long steep hills or mountain passes. I usually clear it and drive on. But, as you’ve said, it shifts fine. Torque converter is fine, no noise etc. I did notice a little too much heat on my drinks in the cup holders (I know common problem). So, I changed the tranny fluid and had a transmission cooler installed and no more hot drink in the cup holders. But, I still throw a “Shift. Solenoid E” code sometimes, but not as often.
If it persists, I may change out the 3 shift solenoids.

Hope this helps and lets hope its not a tranny getting ready to go.
