I've been wanting to get my hood vinyl wrapped in matte black, may give them a call to find out how much. Didn't know D&L did that.

Q on adding tint to factory tinted windows (mine have "Solar Guard" from the factory):
Is it OK to tint over the stock 35% front door tint, or should I specifically request the shop remove the factory 35% if I want to go with 20%? Or would adding another layer of 35% be OK? There is a tiny hair under the stock tint on the driver's side, and I managed to put a small scratch in it with my seat belt buckle if that sways anyone's suggestions. That said - Tint removal does not sound fun or cheap...
Same Q for the rest of the windows (looks like 20% from the factory - I'd like to add another 20% to get to 10%). Any thing special I should know (or tell the shop) about the port-windows (looks like built-in tint?) and rear window w/defroster wires?

You may have purchased the 'Runner with tinted front door windows, but it wasn't "factory". Sounds like the dealer added it. You will need to have it removed if you want to go darker.
The rest of the windows are a different story. They are tinted glass, not an applied film. You can add tint to them as you like to make them darker.

Perfect - Thanks for the clarification. I noticed the fronts were the only ones that seemed to have a film applied from the inside - good to know I won't have to worry about the rest.
Is this true for the rear window with the defroster wires, too? No problems tinting over them?

Much obliged! Would you say adding 35% on top of the factory tint would still be too much? I currently feel the rear doors/port windows/rear window could be substantially darker - I'm also looking to conceal the audio system in the cargo area (will eventually build some panels to disguise/hide it - but that's still months down the road)...
A very hot Texas summer is upon us. I'm adding the sunroof to the "Window Rolldown via Remote" feature at my 5K service on Saturday! :flame:

FWIW - I got my tint installed today. The guy at the tint shop said the 35% Dealer-Installed front tint was the darkest I could go (he had 35% and 20%, legal limit is something like 27%?). I left the fronts as-is with the 35% Solar Guard.
The shop owner convinced me that adding 35% on top of the stock tint would not be much darker for the remainder of the truck, so I went with 20%. It's pretty dark (basically 20% Stock + 20% Film)! But it's the desired effect I was going for (makes it hard to see in the rear cargo area). He also used Solar Guard UV tint (blocks 99% UV + Lifetime Warranty) - so I should be all set!
If only I had the balls to go with 20% up front. I'd be the guy that gets a ticket for sure! :driving:
I'll post some pics of the Tint and the 5100's I installed later this weekend...

I know I've run 20% up front back in the day when the State Inspection was a lot easier to pass (was also fairly easy to pass w/o a cat back then!), but now since all Inspection Tags are linked to the shops that dispense them, it makes it a lot harder to pass inspection. Plus like I mentioned, I'd be the guy that gets a ticket with the Cop making me rip my tint off the window right then and there! Not enough balls as I approach my 40's...
The Texas Law states:

Looks like you have the "in-window-channel" type side window vents.... Weathertech?
Question: you notice if window,when rolling back up, tilts forward enough to expose the non tinted part of glass on your two front windows?
Mine tilt forward just before closing and expose untinted glass....have to push the glass backward with my hands as I'm closing them so they line up n close correctly

I ended up getting the 20% Solar Guard at D&L - everything just like you said. At night, it's pretty dark, and can actually be a little difficult to see so I take extra time when I look through the window to enter traffic at night. I took my wife there to get her Subaru Impreza tinted, and she ended went with 35% Solar Guard. Even that is pretty dark. My 4R looks great, but if I were to do it all over again, I'd probably get the 35%.

It wasn't the state inspection that stopped me and they never even check mine ,as of 2009 the law that cracks down on tint shops is what I had trouble with and nobody would install the Huper Optik 20 I wanted on the front side windows.....so I had to go with HO 30.
ec. 547.609. REQUIRED LABEL FOR SUNSCREENING DEVICES. A sunscreening device must have a label that:
(1) is legible;
(2) contains information required by the department on light transmission and luminous reflectance of the device;
(3) if the device is placed on or attached to a windshield or a side or rear window, states that the light transmission of the device is consistent with Section 547.613(b)(1) or (2), as applicable; and
(4) is permanently installed between the material and the surface to which the material is applied.
So legit tint shops have to put a label between the tint and window stating the shop and what the tint is. I visited several legit shops in person in late 2009 and nobody would put 20% on .They said they would get big fines and possibly shut down their business with the new law. Now ,I'm sure you could get it done down in the hood, with the right money or out of state.
New Mexico's is the only state where 20% side is legal now and thought about getting them retinted when out in Santa Fe last year.Maybe this year!
