Plea to Stock DRL Owners

I apologize in advance for my impatience here.

rando posted a question to owners with stock DRLs in the Daytime Running Lights thread. The question pertains to some uncertainty in the wiring for stock DRL vs. non-DRL systems and we need a stock DRL owner to check a couple of things out. Can we please get a stock DRL owner to respond to this question?

there are 8 pages worth of stuff on there and the only question that i saw from rando (given i didn't read everything) was asked back in july


oh and on a side note. why would you want to add DRls? the first thing i did when i got my 4runner was disable them

Sorry, I know that is a large thread. I think the DRLs are attractive, especially the way Toyota implemented them on the 4R through the turn signal lights. However, if I make this mod I would like to add a switch to enable/disable them.

Here is the basic question from rando's post:

"According to the wiring diagram, the DRL equipped systems share the single filement (of the dual filement bulb) for both DRLs and the turn signals. As best I can tell, the other filement is never used. Someone with factory DRLs should be able to settle this. Look at the 3 pin connector (F5 or F6) on your front turn signal. Are there 3 wires there? There should be a white/black ground wire on pin 2 and red/black (left) or red/yellow (right) on pin 3. What's on pin 1? Where does it go? I searched the entire wiring diagram and its never referenced.

The pin 3 wires flow up into harness to harness connectors in either kick panel (pin A16 of IC4 on the left, pin 1 of IN1 on the right). From there they connect to the flasher.

The non DRL system is similar except that the F5 and F6 connectors have only 2 pins. Pin 2 is again the white/black ground wire. Pin 1 is the same as pin 3 in the DRL system, same wire colors flowing to the same harness to harness connectors in the kick panels.


It's possible that pin 1 and 3 of the factory DRL system is internally shorted in the bulb socket or at the connector (not shown in the wiring diagram though). In that case, both filaments would glow and the overall effect would be brighter. Again, someone with factory DRLs will need to clear this up."

picked up a flashlight to walk out and check, opened the front door, 'twas pouring down rain...again...guess I'll check it tomorrow if someone else hasn't already...

checked the wires just before coming into work this morning. I have just two wires going to the bulb. there are three places in the connector, but only two were hooked up. I unplugged the connector and found that the third place doesn't even have a pin or anything in it....so only two wires...
