Post your LIFTED pix here!

Just mounted the Mombasa awning (6.5 feet) to the Baja Rack (flat expedition rack). The awning comes with its own hardware but I ended up replacing with something a little more secure. You will also need to purchase some washers. The holes that are predrilled in the mounts (provided by BajaRack) are a little large, so you'll need some washers. I mounted it to the passenger side just to balance the vehicle out. As far as wind noise....well there's none, so it's perfect. Packed and heading to Texas.

Will these awnings fit on an OEM rack?

As far as using the ladder with the rack (as long as they're the same manufacturer) you shouldn't have any clearance issues. I have a Baja rack with a Gobi ladder, so I have issues (bought the ladder first...the rack was on sale for an unbeatable price. I'm having that issue sorted out though).

If you use the baja rack, the mounts, depending on the rack, are around $80. They allow for different size mounts and the ability to position the rack closer / further to the vehicle.

The mombasa awning is built fairly well. I can already see some spots that will need to be reinforced but overall it's a good piece of kit. After speaking with the guys at Baja Rack, they informed me that all the awnings are built in the same facility (ARB, mombasa....etc.) so you're basically getting the same product.

By the way, the ladder (other than the lift) was, by far, the best addition. I use it so much it's ridiculous.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to seeing the solution you come up with for the Gobi Ladder and Baja Utility Rack, since that's pretty much what I plan to go with unless there are other solutions out there.

That's a great question! To tell you the truth; I have no idea if they will fit. If you order just the rack, you will receive brackets. They're L shaped steel (appear to be) with pre drilled holes on each end. I'm sure someone could fab something for you if you wanted.

I really didn't mean to copy your wheel setup, but the Methods were the only 17" wheel with a 4.75 backspace that I liked. I needed that specific offset to ensure the tread of the tires do not go past the fenders, because here in Germany they are super strict about tires sticking out and it will be a 200 EURO ticket if caught. They fit great, nice and flush with the fender and the tires a pretty quiet at highway speeds.

I don't have exclusive rights to those wheels, lol! They do look great though. Probably my favorite mod so far. So, what's the story..... Does Toyota sell 4runners in Germany? I thought it was only sold in the Americas? I bet you get some looks driving that beast around!

Got my lift situated finally.

Specs:

2011 Trail with KDSS
Toytec Adjustable Coilovers on the front
OME 895E on the back
Bilstein 5100 all around
Light Racing UCA
FJ Steelies with 285/70/17 Terra Grapplers

Measurements from the ground to the bottom of the fender well are 39" in the front and 40" in the back with a near empty tank. The back goes down to 39" when the tank is full.

Hope this helps people research.

It doesn't rub until the absolute lock to lock left and right on the upper control arm. And even when it does rub it's so light you can barely feel it. I did all the proper trimming and fender liner relocating to make it look fairly OE. I thought of it like this, if people can run 285's at stock height, I mine as well run 315's with a 3" lift, luckily I did, because it workded out perfect

Well, being associated with the military we have the ability to purchase US spec cars here in Germany. The plus side is we don't pay any tax on it,even when we register it back in the states, also the price is discounted and in some cases the car is shipped back to the states for free (US Sec BMW and VOLVO). I saved a good $6,000 off the top, unfortunately I do have to pay $1,500 to ship it back, still too bad of a deal. Yup, my truck gets looks everyday, especially with the local Germans. To them it's a monster truck. In most cases they are just super jealous because we don't have to pay the German price for gas. We pay the same as the average price of stateside gas on all the military installations over here

Time to regear?

Take it offroad and stuff the tires and turn them and see how bad it rubs or tears the inside of the fender wells and tires up. I have 305/70/17's which are 1/2" smaller diameter then yours and didn't any rub at all on the street either but it was a whole different story offroad. Had over a 1/2" clearance at street level with my lift. I tore the outer lugs of my rear tires on the inside of my rear fender wells last summer when I first put them on and had to use a 2 inch bumpstop spacers from MT to limit the rear up travel and solved that . On the front, body mount chop and a spacer on the drivers side LCA where the bump stop hits to limit the up travel where it was hitting on the inside top of the wheel well when stuffed.

All pros about being in the service, I have no problem with you being away from home and yet still having some home features. Thank you for your service.

Like harper7 mentioned, I'm surprised you're not rubbing the body mounts in front. That is/ was my biggest problem and I've just got 285's. Mine was solved after an alignment and trimming, but i've still got MAYBE .25" clearance at full-lock and I worry how bad it would be if I really stuffed the tires off-road.

It looks bad ass though!

Just put my lift on and hope this before and after picture helps people interested in the same setup.

2012 TE w/ KDSS
Front - Bilstein 5100 set at 2.5" w/ stock springs
Rear - 1.5" spacer w/ 5100 shocks & stock springs

Can u explain what's going on with the slider install. It looks like the rocker panel trim piece has been removed - what is that trim piece on the front fender just in front of the slider?

I've got a set of BAMF sliders on order for my wife's new '13T4R and trying to figure out if that's a trim piece I need to buy...

Thanks,

David

That's an easy one, I had to do the same thing when I ran 35's on my 3rd gen. I know most people might hesitate to cut out part of there fire wall and patch it up with a reinforcement piece, but when it come to wheeling, I HATE when I'm flexing out and all I here is the tire rubbing against the body or chassis. I did the alignment myself, and I was able to keep the tire 1 whole inch away from the body mount at full lock. I also tested it on large bumps while turning and it doesn't rub. I just maxed out the rear lower control arm cam bolts to push the front tires as forward as possible. Since I relocated the front inner fender liner and cleanly trimmed the front bumper, I still have tons of clearance in the front section of the fender. I won't be doing any off-roading until I get back to the states, so I'll wait to modify the firewall until I get back stateside.

Like I told all the other guys, as long as you have the LR UCA, you can max out the lower control arm cam bolts in opposite directions to push the tires as far forward as possible. I still have 1 inch at full lock to lock from the body mount, plus my caster is a good 4 degrees, and camber is sitting around +.02 to +.04. It took me going to the alignment shop 3 times, until the tech finally just let me do my own alignment, now it's PERFECT

It still has more than enough power to get around. I'll eventually re-gear to 4.88's once I'm back in the states to gain back some MPG's and relieve some stress on the drivetrain. Since I only do mild wheeling, I'll probably just retrofit an FJ cruiser e-locker in the rear end and rely on the ATRAC to handle the front.
