With the 5100s all around, wouldn't (we) need a modified/replace control arm(s)?

I am trading my Tacoma for a 4Runner and will quickly add 5100 all around. What else will I need to make it the best that it can be?

I don't think so. Even at the highest setting in the front you should be fine. Are you planning to run a rear spacer or new springs?

Sitting on Bilstein's. Debating if I should go 3/2...

I'm not sure about springs or spacers. I don't mind spending the money if the springs make it ride better. What about control arms??? I'm happy to hear your suggestions on what YOU think $2,500-$3,000 will get me. I've got larger wheels already.

You coud easily spend that chunk of change on a full coilover setup, but do you need that? Im very happy with the 5100 on all 4 corners upgrade with a daystar 1.5" rear spacer. Rides great and cost me $385 shipped.

Woody,

Agree with Mistaken. Depends on what you want to do. I don't hit the trails too often so did I need to do the full upgrade? No, of course I wanted it and I didn't do the Bilsteins the right way the first time so instead of just fixing and spending money for nothing, thought it would be best to upgrade the whole thing.

I had Bilsteins (set at 2.5) and the Daystar 1.5 spacer (which I still have and would give to you for a good price, only used for less than a few thousand miles).

I like the adjustable coilovers in the front because you can crank them up a little after they settle and it's easier to get rid of any lean you might have. It doesn't cost an extra $2k to add them. You can buy a kit to convert the 5100's for $450. In the end, it's all about what works best for you.

I want to lift my 4Runner for looks mostly but I can never resist the urge to go wheeling when the chance presents itself. So yea, my new rig should be off road ready so-to-speak but if I have to error in one direction, I'll say that road manners are a little more important to me.

I hate to admit it but I don't know enough to know how/if new springs are better spacers.... I'm what you'd call an idiot and stuff.:lookout:

From my research, I understand that a full spacer kit as a lift kit would bring the ride quality down and serve no benefit offroad, besides clearance I suppose. By doing the full 5100 upgrade, I have noticed better on road ride quality. I have noticed a little more body roll due to the XREAS being deleted but nothing too major. Since these things are so capable out of the box, I would assume you would be good to just do a basic shock and spacer lift.

That makes sense. Still, I worry that I'll screw up my new 4Runner like I did my 2011 Tacoma. I put on a Pro Comp coil over 3" lift on it and bigger tires. It rides terribly for whatever reason. My Upper Control Arms are obviously pointed downward with a 3" lift.

Sorry for almost second guessing ya'll. I think that I'm jaded.... a little scared that I'm gonna end up HATING that way my new rig will ride. Shoot.... My wife refuses to drive my Tacoma now.

Hey Woody,
When I was shopping for my T4RTE I went to a Yota dealer that only had one to test drive.
It was (All Pro Junked Out) lifted 3", sliders (nerf bars w/ steps), flashy wheels and M/T's.
It looked right but I already knew how it would drive.
Bumping all over the road. Could hardly stand it.
They put the hard sale on and I told the guy you ruined the ride but someone will buy it.
It sounds like you have the experience and you've done your homework.
Your wife is right but your gut is too. You know spacers won't satisefy your needs or expectations of what your T4R could be.
Since $$$ is not the determining factor I would (did) research the hell out of every possible suspension kit with in your price range. When you think you've found the one, start again.
The trick IMO is stay with known Suspension MANUFACTURERS.
Not stores (4WP) that sell their brand over what they know are far superior quality parts.
Trust me you will be a happier man. You will like it, your wife will dig it, and your friends will wish there trucks were as solid as yours.
Remember ... Chrome doesn't make it faster, paint only makes it pretty.
It's what you have underneith that counts. sorry for the book ..... Good Luck !!! With whichever choice you make.

Thanks a million. That's fantastic advice! If I were at all competent with a wrench, I'm sure that I'd have settled on a quality set-up by now - probably Bilstien or Icon based on my reading.

Even after reading/studying here for a while, I still struggle with basic terminology. Perhaps now would be a good a time as any to THANK EVERYONE that has shared their experiences. I'd be (completely) lost without you guys.

For a nice road handling 3" lift, what's the consensus? (Budget about $3K - I would like to take my 2016 off road once in a while too.)

Woody,
I too owe a lot of gratitude to everyone here.
I would recommend either:
Toytec's Utimate complete 3" lift. or Icon's Stage 1 complete 3" lift.
Both would be great choices for your needs.
If you are going to run the full 3"s I recommend after market UCA's to help with alignment.
If you stay at 2.5 or less to level her out than stock UCA's will be fine.
Look for a suspension mod shop in your area with good rep for the install. (Not 4WP).
I paid $700.00 to my friends shop. Two people 8 hours. ( so they said) Done right.
Get an alignment (again-good shop, good rep). Research the recommended specs for what ever height you go with. Enjoy the ride.....
You also mentioned a 2016 T4R. If you go for the TRDpro Trail Edition your TRD lift is already installed. Too many options I know.
Again go with your gut.

If I understand correctly, the TRD PRO uses the same Bilstein 5100s that I can install on a Trail Edition but with the TE, I'd have the benefit of KDSS. From what I've read, I'd assume that if I go with the Trail Edition and install the 5100s, I'd have the best of both worlds.
