Projector Retrofit Picture Thread and FAQ

Finally bought everything. I got the Mini H1 Kit from TRS along with everything else from the controller to HID's. I paid around ~$250 for everything with a 20% off promotion for Memorial Day. Received it Friday and installed on Saturday along with DEPO clear corners from eBay.

4500k bulbs. They look yellow in the pics but they're pure white at night. I went for most visible light output over bluish HID's. Honestly, I can't recommend it enough. The headlight output before this was horrible. I've only owned the car for since February and I couldn't stand it anymore.

I just ordered a set of the new Morimoto Mini D2S 4.0 projectors. The current plan is to put together a new retrofit with Amber Halos. I plan on selling either the new retrofit or my current FX-R retrofit when this is all done.

Brian, I'd love to see your exact parts order if you care to share. Sounds like exactly what I'd like to do.

Sure. Below is what I ordered. I used the 15% xmaslights code which ended last night. You can also do the group buy on TW for up to 25% off or wait until new years for the new year's code which will likely be 10-20%.

The first thing I recommend is creating an account at TRS and a shopping cart. Then they will have your email and forward you the discount codes as they roll in. Alternatively just look at their Facebook page on 31st for the code.

spenedwrds will take care of ya, I'm still waiting on my tax return so I can have him build a nice kit for me! It's evil that this thread has resurfaced!!

I'm sure it's been asked before, but it isn't in this thread. Mini H1 or D2S?

I'm not worried about the cost.
I really just want increased output.
I also will be doing rear switchbacks.

As far as shrouds go I like the mini turbine the best, but it only goes on the H1. So I guess I'm just looking for opinions on which direction I should go.

D2S hands down.

Hey Guys,
Ive got a 1997, and the headlight isn't a clear glass. What years do I need to look for? Or is there another option I should look at?
Thanks in advance!

Figured I'd share a new product on our site for those looking to build a set of projector retrofit headlights.

"We have done some of the work for you and have laid out of the products we use for our retrofit builds. We will be constantly adding and upgrading this page to include the hundreds of options you have when designing your very own set of retrofits."

Here you can find housings, projectors, halos, demon eyes, and build materials so you can start your build!

Can the HID retrofit allow us to flash our headlights?

I was told by a friend that HID isn't fast enough to flash and that flashing tends to burn the ballast. Is that correct?

Thanks!

I can flash my brights and doing so has nothing to do with the ballasts, the solenoid raises the "gate" in front of the bulb - at least on my DDM DS2s

Hi all,
Sorry if I missed it in this thread, but has anyone done a retrofit without using an oven to open the assemblies? If so what did you use to open the headlights? I was really hoping to order some projectors off TRS for black Friday, but my mom doesn't want me to use her new oven for opening headlights lol

I used a heat gun for similar reasons. I had no issue opening up and resealing the housings with a little bit of patience. Work the heat slowly and don't leave it too long on one specific spot, of course.

All,

One thing I do want to mention that I did mention in the previous thread was that I found 350 degrees at 7 minutes to be significantly easier to work with when removing the glass. Should only take like 1-2 to minutes to remove.

It looks like some people have removed their battery to do some testing in the previous FX-R thread is that still necessary with the Morimoto Mini D2S 4.0?

I see that people don't bolt down the mini D2S is that correct?

I've also watched this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YrzD6-jHQU&t=309s

and noticed the glue they projectors and shroud together, I'm assuming using the metal tape on the projectors and then gluing to the metal tape is the better alternative here. They also didn't Dremel anything on the headlight housing, is that even still necessary?

Sorry for all the questions, usually I'm very capable of doing things on cars but this kind of mod isn't my normal thing at all.

I think I've managed to sort it out. Seems like the D2S 4.0 projectors should just bolt up. Not really sure why the video I posted the guy didn't loctite the projector on, seems like it doesn't really allow for any movement. Really don't want the projector just falling off into the lens!
