Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

I wish I could get the kind of MPGs that everyone seems to be getting stock. I have stock size Duratracs that are not even LT. I have a small roof basket on the factory roof rails. I consistently get about 14-16 avg. I am lucky to get 17 on the highway. Vehichle has 20,000 miles. I also only ever fill up with 100% gasoline. I have complained to the dealership multiple times that I have been getting abnormally low mpg but they just brush it off. Any ideas of what could be the issue would be greatly appreciated. It just seems odd to me that guys that have lifts and are running 285 LT rated tires are getting the same mpg as my basically stock vehicle.

Well then let's see if we can help you out:
1. Tell us how you calculate your MPG.
2. Tell us your mods, if any.
3. Tell us your typical driving day, i.e. city, 4 miles, interstate, etc.
4. Tell us how you drive, i.e. Fast, slow, aggressive, etc.
Give me that data and we will go from there.

I finally got sick of fighting the losing MPG battle so I just switched the gauge on the dash over the the "Range" setting. After the 3" lift, wheels and E load tires, i was around 15.5-16. Then after throwing the GOBI and 40" LED light on a while back I've been lucky to stay around 15. Latest I've seen yesterday was 14.3..... Very mixed city driving and stop and go traffic. Unfortunatly the highway doesn't get much better. Around 65MPH is good, but when I get to my normal cruising speed of 77-79MPH (on 75mph turnpike) It takes a huge dive back around 15 or so.
This is all from the built in MPG gauge. Using the OBDII bluetooth adapter with Torque Pro reads a few tenths higher. I'd say a have a bit of a heavy foot as well.
I keep telling myself, I didn't buy it for the fuel economy.

if your so concerned with mpg, you should have gotten a highlander or rav4.
any decent real suv (on gas) will not get good mpg no matter the brand. and yes I do know you can get above avg mpg in a JGC but do I want to deal with the hassle of cylinder deactivation? nope.
I learned about 10yrs ago when I had my v8 2004, I couldn't really afford the gas back then and swapped it out for a sedan.
this time around I made sure I could get the 4runner and never worry about the cost of gas.
if I did, I would never be happy driving my 4runner.
now I just fill it up and go. when it gets low I just fill it up again without 1 care about cost of a fillup.
the adage applies in any vehicle you buy :

At 41k, so I'm updating things as they go along...
City: can be as bad as 13mpg, as good as 15mpg.
Highway: so far the best on flat surfaces at 72-73mph is 19 mpg.
I have a TE with a Toytec 5100/Eibach lift with BFG TA/KO's in 285.

I've tracked every gallon of gas since it rolled off the lot. Average mpg is 19.867 based on odometer and fuel pump measurements. My highway mpg is consistently about 22mpg, around town is more like 18. With the cruise set at 90mph I drop to around 18. At 70mph I'm killing its around 23-24mpg.
I'm mostly stock with a front winch and stock size goodyear wrangler ATS tires. My last two tanks were 21.6 and 22.2 on a road trip with 4 people, two dogs, and 4 bags of gear. I have factory cross bars and nothing else messing up the airflow.

Haven't had a whole lot of time to really go through it in any grave detail, and actually took it for a quick trip up north to sedona last week.... So after reading the 17/21 MPG rating, I was a little concerned about what it was registering around town at like 14-15 and highway like BARELY hit 20.....
Welp I have family coming to town and we are also planning another trip to sedona, so I took the time and check over the 4runner a bit including a good vacuuming and a clean... I've been meaning to check the tires since I freaking bought it, but misplaced my tire pressure gauge. Well this morning I headed out gauge in hand to check things out, make sure it's fit for the road and efficient etc.... DAMN TIRES ARE SITTING AT FREAKING 24-25PSI ALL AROUND!!! lol. Needless to say holy shit was it squeshy and it feels like a whole different truck now!!! lol. I was amused.

I am getting between 14-15 combined - 285's on there with a 3 inch lift, gobi roof rack and ladder and my 200 pound self for reference

This may have been addressed, but what app are you using to track your MPG?
